<div class="IPBDescription">whoa</div> Doom asked me to post this, but it's a work in progress. I"ll get screenshots as soon as possible and report on the quality of gameplay.
Here's the story:
I introduced my roommate to Gentoo linux about 6 months ago. He swears by it now. He's at the point where he's arsed to play video games in windows because it sucks so bad to reboot and for some reason his windows partition isn't working so well.
So, he gets himself in the rut where if he tackles something, he does his damnedest to get it working.
Tonights project was to get KOTOR working in linux. Problem 1) it's a directX 9 game. The best emu thing for linux gaming is WineX, which doesn't have good DX9 support.
So, my roommate is learning how to use the CVS and work hard at installing a temp wineX install to get it going and then, after going to transgaming.com, the company that makes WineX, he finds they have a new update and have renamed winex to Cedega and just released it in the past hour.
So, roommate downloads it and installs it.
Problem is, if something isn't working right, usually I'm called upon for my insights to fixing it. So, I'm sitting at my computer and I hear "Tom, come over here and help me with this problem."
I walk into his room and see a big smile on his face - he has the KOTOR startup splash screen up and running. It's a DX9 game working in linux. GG.
So, at the moment he's rebooting and has just finished writing a startup script for the game. I'll be back in a few minutes with screenshots and performance analysis. Unfortunately, his vid card is a Ti4200, so I don't get to see all the eye candy, but as soon as I get another soundcard tomorrow, I'll probably have a similar opportunity to try KOTOR with my Radeon 9500.

[edit] Screenshots still coming, but just watching him play, and it is smooth as hell. Seriously, I didn't believe it could look so good. I'll see what I can find for hunting FPS, etc.

[edit] New edit. Testing uber large screenies. Sorry if they're too big for you. Straight links are here:

My roommate loves Rock Lee from Naruto and says that Episodes 1-3 have/will suck because they don't have Han Solo
<img src='http://www.zen46223.zen.co.uk/ethief/rocksolo.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image' />

All these pictures were taken with some crappy gnome screenshot thing that I had to edit back down to 1024x768.

I don't have a final value on framerates. We weren't sure how to see them from Kotor and we know there's some option to have winex - Cedega as it's now called - to show them. But it was around 3 am and he had to be up in 4 hours to go to work and really needed to sleep. What I can say is that there was no chop. Estimated frames were 50+ fps. It ran smooth as silk.
Supposedly City of Heroes is also supported by this Cedega (winex's new name) and he's real tempted to try it out.

    Impressive. He's probly the forst to get in running in Linux then, since it's such a new update.

    I'll paste pictures at the top, but apparently, it's doable, but takes a lot of tweaking with previous versions of winex. He is one of the few, I suppose.

    LOL, the problem is that it's no green suit, that's for sure <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    But yeah, congrats on him getting KOTOR running on Linux. Looks pretty damn good already for DX9 emulation.

    Caboose - if you have a problem with your wlan driver, might want to check out ndiswrapper. It's a wrapper for an XP driver and I managed to get my beater linksys wpc11 version 4 to work on just about any kernel with it.

    Nice to see that Linux gaming is moving forward. Now all spam valve that we need steam for linux, without wine/winex !

    Yea, it's been suggested to me before. I just can't get it to work. The WAP is a usb thingy... Linux on my PC hates USB...

    I only tryed it with FC1 tho.

    /me is downloading FC2
