Nstiquette

Etiquette for NS
OK I just though I'd put a few of my ideas that could make a game of NS so much better, read and agree/ignore or whatever

The Ready Room

1.) When you first join the server join the team with less people, (I know its normally the aliens but nevermind), NS games are most fun when there are equal teams, I think everyone will agree here

2.) Use random team, it usually knows what its doing, unlike some people

3.) Don't complain about the team you end up joining, that sucks for the team, they're there to have fun, b*tching about the team won't help

Marines

1.) Your teamates are you friends! work as a team, and you will survive!

2.) Don't constantly call for the commanders assistance by spamming the pie menu or other forms of communication, he/she allready has a lot to do, you are just making it worse for them

3.) Don't whatever you decide to do slag off the commander, he's/she's probably a better man than you! and don't call a vote to eject the commander if he isn't doing too well, give him hints on what he could be doing rather than just ejecting him, we've all had our first times.

4.) Don't overuse Grenade launchers, Enough said.

Aliens

1.) Have a "leader" who tells people what to do, it enables you to act more uniform and therefore better

2.) Act like an alien not a marine, For example why walk on the floor when you can walk on the celing? (Its amazing how many people don't look up there) or if you are a lerk fly that type of thing, (it also makes you harder to hit)

3.) Teamplay can help you too, if 3 skulks go against 3 marines, the skulks tend to win

Overall

Act in character, for example theres nothing worse than a camping marine team, if your a camping alien chuckle now and then, it freaks the marines out!

Just a few thoughts!

But, just becuase I am trigger happy doesn't mean I'm overusing grenade launchers damnit!

    Another good rule would be:

If you notcie the teams are unbalanced and you're on the team with more players ask if someone would switch, if nobody wants to do it, be the bigger (wo)man and switch yourself!

NOt only that, for the skulks, it's probably the best weapon they have. Psycological warfare is a POWERFUL tool. Me and another skulk kept the marines inside the holoroom on Hera for a good 6 minutes while a builder got a thrid hive online. We just sat in vests, outside, cloaked and chucking. We only killed, like, 3 or four marines, but we mostly just parasited anyone who came into view, chuckle our little xenomorphic butts off, and then hide in the corner.

I can't tell you how many NSPlayers kept screaming to their commander (in global chat) "There's a thing chuckling in the vent, can you give me a grenade launcher to take care of it?"... we must have caused hundreds of rounds of spent ammo fired in pointless directions, just psyching them out. By the time that they finally got up the nerve to go take us out, we had an Onos on the way, and 2 cloaked fades ready ro rip 'em apart.

Whenever I join a new server I quickly check to see which team is loosing and I join that team, I also make a point of s aying aloud to everyone WHY I am joining that team, in hopes others will do the same.

Psycological warfare doesn't work on everyone in a game. It doesn't work on everyone in real life. You could just as easily bring competition as you would keep it down. Some people really just logon to kill sh*t.

I hope that by switching to the losing team you're not making the teams uneven. There's nothing more frustrating than when you are about to win, after so much hard work, and they suddenely make a comeback because the teams are uneven. I'm sure you didn't mean this...

That's why the cloak is so effective. You get in a cramped space with a marine, say he's trying to build something. You could leap and kill him.

Or, you could sit there laugh. Watch him stop working and start looking around. When he's looking right at you and your close enough leap at his face. He'll be shooting in every friggin direction but yours. Meanwhile, after a nice meal of marine rump roast, you finish off what he was building. Or,
you camp in a spot and wait for another to show up (it'll be a different one for sure) to finish building and repeat! A half built turret factory is GREAT bait...

If your trying to be a commander, for pete's sake get voice comm, its so hard to communicate with your people otherwise.

    "Could you repeat that sir?"

    "RMMDBL mekesls brmble shems smmbl"

    "I can't hear OH MY G..."

lol, true. But generally its neded. It's hard to stop and read what the commander writes, but every time he talks, I listen right away, makes a much faster responding team actually.

In CS(which I still hold dear) the team leader is ALWAYS the one who uses the voice communication effectively.

ei. "Short A, short A, go short A"
and I would always agree on my voice comm. Guess what happened? Everyone(except for the retard bomb carrier) comes with .

We've all seen it and experienced it. At start of round 80% of the players go marines and the rest aliens and if some weird unexplained reason the team actually gets to be equal in the beginning of the game, selection or randomwise, half of the alien players seems to jump over to the marine side as soon the aliens gets a beating.

And please give new commanders a chance, just because the are new does'nt neccesary mean they stink at it, it just means they are new and is trying to learn the ropes. How else will new players learn to command if they never get to command because some self obsorbed player have declared himself the commander of the day and refuses to let anyone else command, even worse if they are new and never commanded before, then there is a vote started instantly to kick him out, never giving the new commander a chance to both learn and prove himself.
There will always be players wanting to be commander, but it does not help by standing jumping at the commandconsole spamming "I want, to command, Let me command!" over and over again. First one gets there, first one gets to be it, unless the entire team actually have decided upon a certain player to be commander.

And another note, being commander is not easy, those of you who has spent some time commanding should know what im talking about. You always have things to do and it's a very stressful position, and having the players constantly yelling and demanding weapons and equipment is'nt really helping. After all it's up to the commander to give what ever to whoever he finds need it, doing what's best in a tactical point of view.
But what happens if those players yelling and spammers dont get what they want? vote-kick commander.

NS players just need to start working together better and show respect for their teammates.
it's simple - Do not do something to someone, that you would'nt want to be done to you.

i was very happy with my second or third ever attempt at Marines today. not only was it a VERY team oriented experience, but everyone was freakishly polite. lol.

people were addressing the commander as "Sir", and the team was willing to let the new guys give the CC a whirl. like i said, it was my third Marien game and i actually got to see the world top-down. and let me tell you: that is a TOTALLY different experience! lol

but seriously, it was really cool. everyone was supportive and patient and effective. GG NS players!

its amazing how dynamic this community is. after all, this has been out for a week, right? lol.

Well thats the just point ive been making in every game i play. YOU THE GRUNT DO NOT ASK FOR WEAPONS! YOU DO NOT TELL THE COMMANDER "Give me a resource tower here" and junk! People need to wait in base, let the commander slect everyone in a nice box, and then give you (us) a waypoint. Go to it, follow his naxt command, etc. He has a plan, hes the one in the seat, NOT YOU! You have no idea how sick it makes me to see a marine over team chat, and then screaming over voice, F*CKING CHRIST GIVE ME A FRICKING SHOTTY! He will drop you the weapons HE WANTS TO! Ive been in games where this guy is trying to switch back and forth between 5 guys, there all over the map, and junk. Its sad, very very sad. Yet no one seems to notices that when people do that, marines generally lose

Do you know what server it was? Computer games are 100x better when the people you are playing with are cool.

I have found a few techniques to improve communication between commander and commanded, as well as persuade soldiers to follow your orders. I will send similar messages to the following over voice comm:

"I am dropping weapons, ammo, and health at the waypoint I just gave you." They tend to go there instead of ignoring you.

"You guys are all split up, I can only follow the main group. Converge back on the leaders." The smart ones do. The other ones die, alone.

"I can give you ____ right now because I don't have enough resources". They stop spamming and usually respond with a "Roger that" or "Gotcha".

I also give frequent status reports over voice comm. "Researching armor now" "Upgrading armory now" "Upgrading turret factory so I can put a siege cannon down, please standby" "Will be placing upgraded weapons at main base in 1 minute"

Giving status reports helps immensely. Remember it's two way communication. They tell you what they want, but you also need to tell them what you are doing. Just like soldiers in the military, the commanders needs to explain his intentions in order for his soldiers to follow orders to the best of their ability. Communicate with your troops and they will follow your orders and respect your strategy.

This thread should be in the manual. It's excellent. Some nice, good techniques there: Chuckle and the CC giving updates on what he's doing.
  • CMEastCMEast Join Date: 2002-05-19 Member: 632Members
Yes, the Commander should definitely give updates.

The main problem is that alot of commanders dont use waypoints and things. There needs to be a plan of action, a goal other than "kill stuff and get good weapons". Then of course because the commander doesnt immediately take charge and so the marines tend to go and do their own stuff. I could wait around in the base and not get any orders at all. Marines have to spawn and not move unless ordered, if you lose that match then fine, the commander will now know to actually set waypoints and use his marines. I think the marines are often at fault. Yesterday I saw a very experienced commander who PTd the game and knew more than anyone what he was doing get kicked out of command because he did something the marines didnt expect him to do. Hed been in less than a minute but because he didnt use the 'tried and tested' (over literaly ten's of games ) formula that everyone else seems to (everyone being the non-PT people). They didnt even give him a chance and so a game that probably would have been an easy win was lost in a couple of minutes... and thats one of the better servers!

When the marines and commander have been used properly it has been such a rewarding experience, this game is easily the best Ive played (though Im more of an alien player really). I just wish people would stick to their roles and learn from threads like this.

Wow! It got stickied! That was unexpected! I had just put a few thoughts down!

But really NS is best played when you are (psycologicly) on the edge it makes it all the more "real"

and I hate people that slag off the commander for guns and armour and jetpacks, without looking at the RPs first
