How To Stay Alive?

StimpyStimpy Join Date: 2003-05-05 Member: 16086Members

as a gorge
So i would like know how you stay alive as a gorge.

Beginning of the round, some of you may ->gorge and build restower ->back to skulk or hit the kill button. But if u choose to stay as a gorge, what do you do if some rambo marine comes and tries to hunt you down. Well if I'm lucky i can circle around restower like a mad and get him killed with spit. I've noticed that is waste of resources if you build OC when marine has noticed you, it is even easier to hit gorge if it's building. Best tactic i've used is to evolve to skulk once the marine sees you, when you evolve the unupgraded marine can't kill unless he is next to you. As the marine comes closer, shoots his lmg empty and starts reloading you finish evolving, have full health and now you take out the sorry marine. But I would like to know what evil plans you had come up?

if he is a smart marine, he will switch to pistol rather than reload, then knife (if you arent already dead)

Celerity and sprinting around the map keeps you alive.

You can wing it with any DC upgrade, to be honest Cara is a safe bet as you should NOT be hit more than once with any weapon.

Plus cara goes well with focus and adren/celer if you intend to battle gorge it.

I suggest using the MAAAAAAAAAP and watching out for marines attacking teammates. Try and keep in "friendly territory" and be aware that if you're the only thing on the far side of the map then chances are you're going to bump into some flanking marines. Try and stay just behind the front lines and place your chambers tactically.

I suggest you try it, it doesn't take so long to evolve skulk so he could knife you. I admit it won't work every time but I say it has better chances than trying to spit him.

Is staying gorge after you have dropped your rt a viable option? I alwalys skulk for res.

why? its a waste of 10 res for gorge, why not wait until you have enough for another res tower.

Yeah, why waste 10 more res for the gorge? Just get redemption...

I usually go gorge and of course drop one rt or one chamber. After that , I usual stay permagorge for as long as possible. Staying near skulks is safe/dangerous because there's marines and then there's skulks protecting you and you helping them by healing. As my res gradually increases I usually drop a rt or a oc but only to warn me if a marine is coming or in choke points. I usually barely capped double rts, cause that's what the marines want you to do. power

If you learn how to bhop, gorges can move VERY quickly

You must get to the rt you're going to drop the instant the game starts. Otherwise a smart rambo will be there to kill you. What happens is this: "comm, what's their hive?" (Say the map is veil) "Oh, their hive is sub." "Ok, thanks" (Marine bolts to cargo, the "best" rt to drop, when, in fact, since the marines know this is the best rt to drop, it will be first on their hit list) It takes longer for you to run to cargo, go gorge, and build the rt than it does for mr.rambo to get there if he doesn't hesitate to build anything at marine start. I would suggest just going to pipe, because most likely they'll stop to build emergency if they're not turbo-gorge hunting and the comm doesn't listen for gorges too frequently. This gives you time, the most important resource. The "mini-game" of 1st rt placement is actually pretty complicated, as you can see by this example. Even your gorges can be smart and influence the game substantially. I can't tell you how many games I won as marine on veil by just running to cargo to kill the aliens' brand new rt.

I only stay gorge after dropping an rt if I trust my teammates(like in a pug). But, heck, I only DROP rts when I trust my teammates(or in small games). As in, trust them to go fade instead of me, and use it well, like I would. If you're good at "sixth sensing" where marines are, by having a feeling of where they're going just by the encounters you've been keeping track of with your map, or the LACK of encounters(which says just as much about where they are), and intel from teammates, then you should be able to provide forward healing to your skulks, making you more valuable. And no biggie if you die. But like the skulk, gorge needs bhop to get around quickly enough to be most useful in this role. Another case where you'll want to go back skulk is if you have sensory. Unless you somehow are very close to 10 res for a sensory chamber, just go skulk again to contain the marines with cloak or focus. If you're sitting around as gorge while marines are off electrifying res everywhere or locking the hive (counters to sens) then you're not helping the team in the way you should.

And spit CAN kill marines pretty quickly if you hit with every one. I find it is better for a gorge to get very close to kill with spit because of its slow velocity, when you're 1v1. Wait for the marine to come around the rt to kill you, then pretend you're a skulk, hehe. He is tall and you are short. Jump up and down and he may miss a few shots trying to get the vertical dimension of aim right, while you only have to worry about horizontal. This could give you the time you need to kill him. Oh yeah, 9 out of 10 good gorges agree, cara is the upgrade of choice.

I usually go perma gorge at the start of the round in maps with a reasonably easy to defend dbl res points, I rush to dbl and setup a single OC in such a position that the marine must enter the dbl res room before he can shoot the OC, between me spitting and the OC the marine usually dies...or runs away in which case a skulk usually takes him becase I report 'marine at dbl' before the fight

Most maps I go gorge, drop a res and go skulk and hang around near adventurous gorges... defend the gorge and get healed after the fight

I find a lot of gorges try use rt's as a shield, this is effective till the marine closes in for the kill, this is where the hide behind a rt tactic is a bad thing because theres precious little doging room and the gorge has problems spitting the marine. I prefer to try take out the marines in a wider area where I can dodge, jump and strafe while spitting the marine to death.

Long range spitting is a waste of adren. unless your target is AFK or a total new player...it only attracts unwanted attention.

But the biggest and should be most obvious tip is to avoid getting into marine v gorge situations in the first place. Use your ears, a ninja marine can't walk everywhere... they usually run till they are in a potentially dangerous spot or hear some noise. As a gorge you should listen for the boots of the marines and if you are building ...report marine position ,stop building (unless its a nearly finished OC - a gorge building makes a very distinct sound) and get away. I often take time to scout a hide position before I get down to serious structure placement.

And if anyone hears, it's usually two seconds after you have been porked and sauced, probably also grinded and eaten too.

So true; if you can aim well. And the marine nicely stays put for the anti-gravity goo to hit.

    4)Bunnyhop

    I have done this before:

Say the map is ns_nothing, and you are by generator (not the elevator side). A marine comes from the elevator and you start spitting from the doorway. You bunnyhop to miasma, and then spit from there. Bunnyhop to the next corner, and spit. Bunnyhop to the next (by the other elevator) and keep spitting. The marine won't expect you to be so far away

Wirhe, perhaps that's what happens with you... but then, there are some people who can work it. My post was oriented toward those who weren't fatalistic, and actually enjoy trying something new now and again. (Such as occasionally starting out with Movement, or *gasp* Sensory, and stomping the Marines horrifically)

Gorgedance + Redemption == Time for redemption to kick in.

Marines are used to seeing Gorges trying to run away. It's startling, and buys a half-second that the Marine cannot afford.. as well as throws off their coordination. Even 'Vets' are suceptible... and not just the quick-joined ones.

A gorge is a powerful tool, if you don't get stuck in the rut of thinking that they're only builders. They're an offense class too, and are exceptional in groups. Hell, have you ever been on the recieving end of a gorge rush? It's humiliating, painful, and *unexpected*. But it works, when you have Gorges who aren't thinking 'must gestate NOW!!!'.

IMO, permagorging is hurting the team more than its helping it.

Sure, you save the 10 res, and just wait for 15 res to trickle in and then make another rt. But what are you doing while you're waiting? Absolutely nothing. Besides the occational "Heal me, gorgie", you're not contributing defensively or offensively. You're cannonfodder, a free kill.

Now of course situation changes with how fast your resource is trickling in, but even so, if you're getting resources fast enough, why do you need to save up for that other res node?

/kill in console, kill stuff, regain the 10 res AS res is trickling in for the 15, regorge, put down the other res node. Its not a waste: You're killing marines, you're taking down marine res nodes, you're stunting marine growth. You want to give up those important aspects of the game just because you don't want to spend 10 res again just to gorge?

No thanks, i'll put down my rt, and skulk back kthx.

I'm not saying permagorging is a bad thing, but to say "Don't waste the 10 res, sit around doing nothing until 15 res comes in then put down another res node" is a really bad strategy.

Back on topic: as Talesin described, gorgedancing around stuff that take the damage for you (like a res node) is your best bet. While doing so, spit and scream for back-up.
  • TalesinTalesin Our own little well of hate Join Date: 2002-11-08 Member: 7710NS1 Playtester, Forum Moderators
Bah. I guess it just means that it'll be even more unexpected when I rush into a Marine and kill him with spit, given that people seem to think that Gorges are worthless in combat.

Again. If you know what you're doing, and how to handle a Gorge, they're just as deadly (if not moreso) than a Skulk. A decent Gorge can handle one Marine pretty easily. Two gets a little 'iffy'. Three, you'll probably get toasted, but take at least one down with you. Redemption however lets you kill that one Marine, and warp back to the Hive. I've ticked off many Marine teams by charging in, killing one, and -blip-.... back to safety.
