Your connection speed is a serious impediment. 5 to 8 players will probably be your limit, even with turning sv_maxrate down.

what about a 1.5mbps cable connection i usually just put 32 players as it is the HL engine max
• modiemodie Join Date: 2003-02-19 Member: 13758Members, Constellation
it depends on how many people your sharing your connection with - is it a true 1.5Mbs. Just start it at 32 and see where it goes.

I don't think I've ever heard of a cable connection with 1.5mbit of upstream.

So long as your downstream is greater than your upstream, it doesn't matter for server hosting. Running a speed test like http://nyc.speakeasy.net will help determine your actual connection speeds.

Here is from personal experience:

I have a dedicated 128 k upload server.

I can have 4 people on it with good pings (<150). However, if a 5th person joins, the ping will skyrocket to about 3000+ MS. It also depends on certain maps. For example, for ns_castlewars, I can have 5 people playing and still get decent pings but for ns_canyonwar, 4 people playing lags the server to hell.

Also, another impedement is the number of turrets/oc's your clients build. OC/Turret farms will kill your server and you know how much we NS 2.0ers love to farm.

So basically, don't even try to run a server with a 256 k SDSL and expect to get good results ... its simply not possible.

I have a p3 550, 512/256 ddr ram (will 512 help alot?)... and a 2mbit/512kbit adsl line... I am able to have 12 people on with good pings, but once and a while the ping jumps up (usually when a game has finished and everybody is in the ready room). I havent tweaked anything, so I suppose it would help. Any tips?

DDR RAM on a Pentium 3? I don't think so.

You should be able to run a 10 person server with no problems, as long as you have it set up correctly. I actually can run at least an 8 person server with 192 upload, and I think I can squeeze 10 players into my bandwidth and still have good performance.

If you want me to tell you how, I can, but be prepared for a long post, and you will have to do a heck of alot of work to set it up.

I have a 1Ghz Athlon - 512MB DDR - 1MB up/512k down ADSL connection....

And I´m thinking of running a server, what playerlimit (with playable pings) do you think I could handle?

alright listen...

if your hosting at home:

no more than 12, test it out, you might squeeze 16 outa it if the server has some beef (high cpu and ram)

the only way to get more than that is to cough up the loot and rent a dedicated server connected to a phat pipe like the big boys: Bandwidth: 1000 GB

theplanet.com has been good to me, but thats cause i give them money every month, heh.
