If you don't like steam I guess you will not have to play NS or any other HL game when they shut won down. They aren't going to develop for a medium that will soon be gone.

why don't you like it? for some thing you only have to pay next to nothing to get full access to (£5 GBP for a Half-Life CD these days) ....

Steam has a real bad reputation... sure it's buggy, but what game isn't.

Update, or enjoy playing out-dated games for a long time

Steam isnt buggy anymore.. EXCEPT for friends.. Very buggy/laggy/crappy.. You do not have to use friends. And when they release an update it gets buggy. other than that steam is great.

I use but dont like steam because in a lan party not everyone is gonna have HL and we could just use a keygen to play on the lan.

now it more complicated. We want to play Ns but have to play something else

Steam is great. Besides, you have no choice. Either get with the program or get left behind, WON won't be around forever.

ive never known anyone among my friends to ever have experienced a "steam-related" reboot/computer crash or whatever...honestly i think its just you people who use stone-age computers that cant handle steam

i agree steam used to be buggy as hell...remember the day that valve released cs 1.6 beta? only 100/1,000,000 could get to where they could play cs 1.6 for more than 2 minutes on the first day of its release.

all that has changed though...i havent had steam crash in months personally.

Diddums. You mean you actually have to pay for a legal copy of a game that costs what? £10 nowadays? That's nothing.

gotta live with steam. Plus, it's a bad idea to post about how much you hate steam on these forums. Especially when it's something like " i do not like steam nor will i ever"

Steam works fine nowadays for most if not all people I know.

Why are people so incredibly stubborn about Steam? It works fine now provided you have a copy of HL. And even the cheapest LAN party goers can go buy a copy of Half-Life for $15(not sure how much it is over Steam). It's obnoxious how people at LANs still play CS 1.5 because they never even bothered to look into Steam or because they're terrified of actually buying a game that they're going to play...
• redScareredScare Join Date: 2004-05-18 Member: 28752Members
OK, I really hate steam, so my opinion is quite biased. But anyway...

I'm sure steam works relative well when you just want to play in ONE computer at your home. But problems start when you try to play ON LAN with your friends OR play in internet FROM a LAN. Why? Cos steam authenticates you this way: When you log in it checks and stores your IP adress. Then, when you want to play a game it verifies that your IP is still the same. If you only have 1 computer... no problem.

But what if you have several computers conected to internet though a router?? Then you have just ONE external IP adress for ALL the computers (the router one) and INSIDE the LAN every computer uses a private IP (that usually starts with 192.168.). The router translates external IP to internal IPs. This is called NAT (network adress translation). What happends with steam is that with this kind of authentication protocol only ONE computer in the LAN can play Half-Life at a time, even if every user has its owb steam account and legal CD-key).

Now bear in mind that this is not a bug. Its a ****ing BIG programming and desing mistake. And I fear (for what I have read in the steam forums), that this is part of the steam core, so it cant be fixed with a little patch.

If you still don't think that this is a terrible mistake, think about cybers... Some of them have no problem cos they use a different IP for each PC, but most of LANs in the world (at offices, universities, etc) use NAT. They have ruined a lot of cybers with this. And also they have ruined those big LAN Parties which take place all over the world with (2000+ computers). Valve is just (as we say in spain), throwing stones at his own roof.

Thats why I dont like steam at all. So plz dont tell me i have no reasons to hate it.

Sorry redScare, but what you're saying is completly wrong.

I myself am behind a linux software router using the standard firewall and NAT to forward all incoming ports to the clients.
I've been using Steam since it has been publically released in beta form (when cs 1.5 was being beta tested) and had no problems regarding my internet connection at all. Now since it has been officially released my brother is using it aswell. Of course our old Half-Life key couldn't be registered two times so he had to use my Blue-Shift Key.
But it works just fine ! I'm using my cd-key, he's using my other with his account and we're both able to play (even on the same server) over steam at the same time. Many friends of mine are using the same method to connect to the internet (linux router that is) and have no problem when they're hosting a Lan and we're sharing the same connection with up to 15 guys. Everyone was able to play over Steam.
It can't be the ip adress which steam is having problems with, 'cause linux also automatically uses one adress for the whole connected network to the internet.
So the only problem i can see is that your router really isn't capable of distinguishing between multiple clients and isn't able to send the data coming from the net to the clients requesting this data. Maybe you should check the config for your router or look if you find any post complaining about this problem at the manufacturer of your router.

Regards Paladin

ive logged onto my steam account at friends houses... the ip makes no difference. I suggest looking into what your talking about before making such a statement. I've run lans, but not with a single account, so I don't know if that works.
• RobertoRoberto Join Date: 2003-03-16 Member: 14591Members, Constellation
Yep, my sister and I play on the same server all the time.
• redScareredScare Join Date: 2004-05-18 Member: 28752Members
You may be right, and I hope so. But if you're right it's cos it has been finally fixed.

I don't have any problems with my steam account, I just read all that in the official steam support forum cos I'm looking forward to have a LAN party and i wanted to see if I could do it with steam cos where we do the lan party (at a friend house at the countryside) there is no internet connection. But thx anyway

Just to ssjyoda: You've not understand what I've said. I said steams looks and checks your IP when LOGGING IN (not when you register your account), so of course you can use your account in a friends house. Also, I wasn't talking about having just one steam account. So I suggest looking into what your talking about before making such a statement. That, or learn to read properly.

And anyway I still think its sucks that you need to have internet conexion to play in LAN. And I dont like either the 'black-box' phylosophy (typo??) that steam has. But, hey! That's just an opinion.

My friend plays at my house all the time, no problems, exept the one time he unpluged the router we where on.

And each person who is playing needs his own steam account.

And your right the ip adress makes no differnce. I run steam behind 2 hardware firewalls and 2 software ones, and 2 routers. I think it more imporent how your router is set up then the fact there is one.

EDIT: try playing in offline mode, i think you can do a lan game with that.

when you log it. it simply checks your sn and pw. thats it. Each account is locked to a cd key..

OK, I checked back the steam forums and the problem wasn't exactly what I posted. My fault, sorry. But the authentication process IS the one I described. An account is locked to a cd key but also to the ip you're using when you log in (to prevent cheats or something like that I suppose). So you are still wrong, ssjyoda

EDIT: To use steam offline (if I'm not mistaken) you need to log in and then go offline. So you still need internet conecction to play in LAN.

You need an internet connection once to log in and update all of the content on the games you wish to play. Use the "exit" feature rather than "exit and log out" then disconnect from the internet and play offline on LAN as long as your heart desires.

OK, as I said in so many similiar topics already, we are not the place for Steam-centered discussions. Use their boards for that.
