I prefer the HMG because it can do a hell of a lot more damage before you have to reload, and is more accurate.
EDIT:
Revelations about the SG's spread and adjusting to compensate have made my favourite gun change to the SG. The HMG is still a better supressive weapon, but the shotty's all-round usefulness and faster reload make it a better for general use.

Hmm.... I think either LMG or Shotgun... Personal Prefrence though, not which is actually better...
-Pistol does a good amount of damage extremely quickly and accurately... It is *the* way to take out skulks peeking around corners, or finishing off a retreating skulk, or popping off one of the three skulks coming at you before they get into an effective range for lmg or whatever else you've got.... -LMG has a small cone, and so a nice range, so if yuo're accurate, it kills... -Shotgun has a huge cone, but the insane amount of damage at close range makes it awesome for fades... Double damage to buildings... -HMG is good for onos, and makes them not be able to retreat nearly as easily (due to the longer range then shotgun) -GL is fun.
heh... Ok, so back to the question... My favorite is shotgun paired with the pistol.... shotgun takes down buildings fast, can stop anything below an onos dead in it's tracks, is a gun that takes some amount of skill at aiming... I also used to love it as alien because most people weren't effective with it at close range, and I normally feared HMG at close range more then shotgun... The pistol also has that aiming skill thing, and an almost infinite distance capability and awesome accuracy makes it rule...
So yup. Oh, and I hate the sound of HMG (and it's cone), so I normally would pick LMG over HMG.

shotgun deals a large instant ammount of dmg and you can move better to get out the way of somin. A second isnt exactly a short time when in battle and if a fade is flying about everywhere if he gets close and hit you then shoots off, your better off with the instant dmg of the shotgun than a split second of fire your gonner get on him from the hmg.
Although general combat wise id say hmg is better but they need support for destroying structures like a couple of shottys or a gl. Its just a waste having them fire there clips on stuff and then when they are reloading the aliens attack and they all die

Well sometimes i see skulks magicaly evade more than half of hmg bullets cos the spray is to wide, then again shotgun makes sparks.
Don't blame me, i'm the most unlucky skilled player of every video game that ever existed. I'm only good with pistol, even lmg i seem to be very bad lucky at medium range. Damn even bite, swipe, gore, have a little randomness of range cos of old engine and latency...don't worry i suffer everyday of being noobed by lucky players...maybe i gotta format cos its horrible theses last 2 days.

if you have a good aim shotgun is definetedly the best overall, of course the hmg does more damage BUT you have to keep the aim at the alien all the time although with the shotgun you just pull off a shot at ex. a Lerk, jetpack a bit away wait til he comes again and finish him off , if your a skilled jetpacker with a shotgun youre definetedly more effective than a hmg.
And the shotgun gives you the ability to load partial shells while the hmg loads 100% at a longer time which oftens leads you on highway to heaven
The Shotgun is also effective vs. fades&onoses as the damage type is indirect fire the fade/onos wont notice that his hp is dropping as good/fast as if he were attacked with a hmg(s)
but as said before , every weapon serves its purpose you cant manage wihtout any of them

I avoid the SG as much as possible, as I can't hit squat with it. In combat, I usually get a L3 LMG first, then save two points and go straight to HMG. It's terrible for an offensive play, as you can't get to the hive alive or do decent damage to it if you make it, but you can rack up a great deal of defensive kills with it.
I like the shotgun and hmg, but it depends on the situation.
Shotguns: Usually good for killing skulks,lerks, and fades. Possible to kill a onos but not really recommended. Shotguns are also good for destroying structures. Advantages: powerfully close range and can shoot while reloading. Disadvantages: Pellets spread apart so not good long distance.
Hmgs: Can kill skulks almost instanly or if you can aim <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->, can destroy structures good too, but I prefer it for attacking units rather than a structure. i prefer the shotgun over the hmg...why? hmg does damage too slow and lets aliens redempt easier...while shotgun does instant damage....plus the long reload for the hmg...hm....in all i prefer shotgun <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Back in 1.04 when I started playing, I was one of the few shotgun users. Now I usually avoid it, mostly because my aim is quite horrible at point-blank range against fast-moving aliens. I'd take a shotgun against fades but I prefer the HMG for everything else (except buildings, GL or knife all the way there). The HMG ammo also lasts longer I found, I seem to die more often when I pack a shotty than a HMG - and everyone else packs shotty anyway, leaving me and my HMG to deal with lerks and such at range.
