When we set up our LAN parties at our meetings we use HL without Steam. We use the latest version of Half life up until steam came out, now NS 2 was awsome and really fun... Here's my question : Will we be able to set up NS beta 4a on the old HL LAN system? or will it puke on us and we'll have to go play BF1942?

Just exit steam without logout.. It will work...

Just copy your nsp folder from steam right into hl folder. It should work. But I have done this recently and I haven't check if the pop-up menu pops up <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo--> . In any case, you can use a script to bind the pop-up menu commands to some keys. I'll post the binds when I go back home. There are all "impulse xx" type. I found them in a german web after searching in google.

But I think you'll need a good script for the alien team in case you want to play beta3 without the pop-up menu without needing a key for each building/upgrade. Maybe I'll make one ifI have enough time (exams are near).

BTW, the pop-up menu DOES work. But u need to have players in both teams or sv_cheats enabled.
I have even found a server running 4a over WON <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
How to make it work on WON ?
Just copy the NSP folder to HL Folder ?
or need something else?
Oh, I've notice that metamod does not work with beta4 installed this way. The game crahes when you try to create a server... what a pity. Anyway, better this than not be able to play in LAN without internet conecction.
