Shotgun Or Hmg?

<div class="IPBDescription">Which do you prefer??</div> I've heard many people say that the shotgun is the best weapon in the game, but in many games I just see people asking for the HMG, personally I always thought the HMG was much more effective in killing both small and big aliens, but I heard the advantage of shotgun because of its massive damage(221 was fully upgraded) and the power to rush hives early in the game. Any suggestions to which gun is good for which case.

    Shotgun is also known as the "sparkler gun" because of it's glitchyness that cause's about 33% of your shotgun shell's not to register at close-range. That's why I prefer HMG because it alway's hits on the spot and doe's damage faster than a shotgun could against an Onos.

    btw hmg does more damage than a shotgun in 1 second(hmg fires 10 bulllets a second, with each bullet doing 24 damage at lvl 3 weapons, so that's 240 damage a second)

    Shotties against Fades and structures, HMGs against everything else. It's too hard to reliably hit a good Fade with an HMG unless you have a bunch of marines, but even the best Fade has to leave himself open to a shotty blast when he gets close enough to swipe you.

    Shotty: you're gonna hit with some even if you don't hit with all of the pellets
    HMG: if you can't hit the target it's not taking damage

    Shotty: good for blinking fades, fast lerks, and leaping skulks
    HMG: good for Onos, running skulks, and anything that's farther away than the shotty's max range. Also good for narrow corridors.

    Conclusion: each has its place, and it also falls to user preference as well. I personally trust a shotty more than a hmg.

    I dont like to use HMGs much.
    SG sparks a lot lately.
    So i think the LMG wins this one.

    Level 3 HMG fires 15 shots a second at 26 damage apiece, for a total of 390 damage per second. Shotgun fires 1.25 shots a second, totalling 276 damage per second at level 3. HMGs are much more accurate and can sustain fire for a longer duration. The only disadvantages HMGs have compared to shotties is increased cost, lessened effect against structures, and a reload period that leaves the user more vulnerable.

    Yea shotgun has to be like for fades and structures. I remebered when about when the commander did a shotgun rush and most of aliens wern't in hive or are dead and like 10 marines at once shot the shotgun and and hive was dead instantly. Shot guns and HMGs thinking about what they can do is pretty similar. Also hate it awhile ago (Don't know the patch but it was either 3.0 beta 3-4) we were playing like 1rines vs 2 aliens and this guy went fade with like regen and carapace . Fade crouched and (Also with focus) just chased me. I had like a level 2 shotgun too and shot like about 8 times and fade still alive. The horrors of crouching fades. And/or is it the shotgun too?

    I've always wondered how exactly you'd define a 'bugged' shotgun - its simply logical that you'll see (now correctly displayed) bloodsprites on your target although you might not hit. After all, they're drawn the moment you fire - and that firing pattern too is entirely client-sde. The server for all we know determines its own pattern of your SG blast, which might be completely different from what you see.

    Just a guess though.

    shotgun works very well against redempting aliens, since they take chunks of health instead of lil at a time like hmg and lmg. So the aliens have lil chance of redempting back to their hive

    Personally, when i can aim, ill stick with my shotgun. One shot kill pwns.

    But when there is onos, and fades everywhere, just go in there and spray.

    For killing aliens, I'll take an HMG anyday. In classic I'll drop shotties if res is tight, and HMGs if it's not. I'll take whatever I pick up if i'm not commanding.

    In combat, I almost always go with a shotgun. Why? I already said that I prefer the HMG for killing aliens. In combat, marines can take the hive down surprising fast. The biggest problem for them is that noone attacks the hive, or goes in the hive and just shoots the aliens. My goal in combat, once I get a shotty, is to kill the hive. Aliens could be crushing the marines, but if 1 or 2 with shotguns (preferably jps too) get into the hive, the marines still stand a good chance of taking the hive down before they lose the cc to spawncamping.

    Bascially teh HMG for aliens, the sg for hives. (in combat and in classic) However, I'll take a GL for killing OCs, and it's always good to have one GLer in a group in classic for support. (similar to a machine gun in the military role)

    HMGs have a massive cone of fire, it's not accurate much farther away than a shottie. And I already said that shotguns are more "accurate" against fast aliens, cause you'll be lucky if you can track them with a hmg long enough to kill them.

    I'll go out with my shotty any day...
    For a shotty, you might need some guts when you see an onos though...to just fly up to him, take a sht or 2 and fly out...u got less chance of being eaten when u've got an hmg...

    Let's just check a few enemies:
    <u>Skulk:</u>
    Both are equally good, you fire a few shots with an hmg and you've got a while group down, you fire 1 or 2 with a shotty and due to the spread you've got the same amount down.
    <u>Gorge:</u>
    Meh...not really a difference...not really a combat alien...
    <u>Lerk</u>
    If you have a nub/normal one, hmg will do, if you got a skilled one, you need a shotty, a pistol, and one hell of an attitude...
    <u>Fade:</u>
    Same as lerk, although you might even consider taking a shotgun with a medium skilled fade (blink in/out is dangerous)
    <u>Onos:</u>
    Like i said in the intro...hmg is a bit better...
    <u>Structures:</u>
    Shotgun, DEFINATELY shotgun

    There is no best weapon, a good comm will give out a mix of all the weapons for maximum effect, say 2 shotguns for close range, 3 HMGs for onos and long range, and a <i>grenade launcher</i> for structures, it is MUCH better than shotguns for that.

    Your team needs a good mix of weapons in order to win. I'd say a good formula for a squad of marines is 2 Shotties + 2 HMGs + 1 GL = PWN. GL to clean up skulks and take down WOL, shotties to kill anything that gets close, and HMGs to strike at aliens from a distance and draw them in for the shotties to kill.

    Whats the total dmg shorty and hmg (lvl 3) can inflict before reload ?

    I like shorty in CO and pritty much use any thing am giving in reg. altho depdning on the situation i may make a request. if am jping i like the shorty altho hmg i feel is just as good if used correctly.

    26 dmg per shot. 260 for 10. hmg fires at 9/rof so it's 26*9 at lvl3. 251.
    I like sg more it simply kills a clone up shulk/fade/lerk faster. I suck, kthx
