Need Networking/routing Help

Right now I have 2 computers with Win XP and one OS 8.6 Mac computer hooked up to a D-Link DI-604. I've been able to get all of them working great, however, when I tried to hook up another computer, this time a laptop running Win ME I can't get the thing to work. Win XP is extraordinarily easy to hookup and the Mac was easy, but I'm not familiar with the networking for ME.

Anybody know how to make the laptop work ?

The reason they called it WinME was so morons would think they were getting something desirable.

Wipe it as quick as you can and slap on 98SE or XP, if possible. If not, consider tossing Linux on.

yah know, I actualy agree with Tale on this one.

Even linux is a better OS for a home computer then ME.

However, if you insist on networking it...

Look around for infor on how to network windows 9x machines as I believe they should help out.

This is truly a backwards day, as I too am forced to agree with Talesin. WinME is, to be quite honest, usually more trouble than it's worth to get talking to an XP machine and Mac "toy".

My brother wanted his computer on the network, but outright refused to change from winME. After maybe two weeks of poking around with the settings, protocols, and drivers, I finally got it talking. I honestly don't even know what I did to get it working, but it now works. So just so you know, it is possible, but is a very frustrating experience.

However, if changing your OS, my vote is for win2000 (if staying with MS, that is). I never did like XP's hold-your-hands-at-all-times interface.

    98SE? Why not Win2k?

If the system specs are too low. I've had laptops like that in the past where I went to upgrade them, and received a 'hardware does not meet or exceed minimum operating requirements'. Notably a laptop with 32MB of RAM, which did not play nicely with Linux.

Again. I'd recommend downloading the newest Fedora Core distribution from redhat if you're a Linux newbie, and installing from that. AVOID MANDRAKE. Both are decent for learners, but Mandrake is the LEAST stable Linux distro, with all the kernel patch crap they've done.

Hell I've never actually seen a WinME computer communicate with other computers. After several hours I managed to get one to recognize that a network existed, but it still refused to communicate with any other computers. This was, however, a wireless network. Your best bet is to use anything but WinME. Linux preferably, since Windows.... well.... *expletive*

    WinXP > Win2k > Win98SE > Win95 > Win3.1 > DOS > WinME

Edit: if you're up for a challenge, Gentoo is a nice Linux distro. Completely customizable. You can install as little of it or as much as you want. But for a newbie, Talesin's right. Fedora is nice, easy and comes with a GUI

Well, it's not my laptop first of all. I can't stand Win ME either, but, I think one of my other friends might be able to get it working, oh well, only time will tell.
