Actually, I don't know any sailors, but I do have a friend down at the LAN center who's a marine. He's one crazy ****ing jarhead (and I don't mean that as an insult - he really is just a crazy mother****er).

My grandfather was on a ship during WWII, too. His job was mostly fishing people and corpses out of the water and loading cannons, I believe. He served on the "HMCS Arvida", a corvette, but I've been unable to find anything about it.

    [EDIT:] Aha! Found something.

While underway, my dad was the Sonar technician. You know that lil radar thing. Then toward the end of this sea duty he got an award for sterring the ship allthe time. Like dead on, something like that.

And then on shore duty he made plans for all the ships to come into port, and what fixes etc.

Sonar and radar are very different technologies. Sonar deals with reflecting sound waves off of objects, while radar uses high-energy light waves. Additionally, there is "passive" sonar, or simply listening for enemy subs or ships when you don't want to reveal your own position with a loud "ping."

I've only heard of the SBS on two occassions, both of the people are in the military. Basically my cousin is in the navy and he said he is going for a position there. A collegue of mine used to be a sentry at Buckingham Palace and was in Northern Ireland before that. He is the one that said the SBS are better when we were having a discussion about his military background. Can't remember how we brought it up though

Yes, because if you did that, the enemy subs would kill you.

Just done a little Googling and it appears that the SBS does sound a lot like the Navy seals with their under water activities such as demolision.

Well, it makes sense for the Brits to have multiple divisions of SpecOps. Here in the US, we have the Army Rangers (quasi-SpecOps), Green Berets, and Delta Force; Navy SEALs; and Air Force ground operators (like the Green Berets, but they build airstrips out of sticks and leaves - 1337 stuff). That's not even counting the civilian agencies, like the FBI's elite hostage rescue SWAT team.

As far as I know, the marines don't have a dedicated SpecOps teams. They do, however, have STA (Surveillance and Target Acquisition) Scout/Sniper platoons, which are pretty badass.

Well, from what I understand, pretty much the whole Marines are SpecOps compared to most of the US military, but their specialist teams aren't as impressive as their counterparts from other branches.

My grandfather fought the Germans and was later captured, then put into the prison camp... Good thing the war was over before he starved to death. Although he lost a lot of weight, he was in good health and lived for many years after that, making a living in Germany...
