I'm sure some of you have played it now, and if not, there is the demo that I am currently downloading.
For those of you who have played it, is it Thief? Is it good? Have they fixed the performance problems of the DXIW engine? Some reviewers have said that the graphics are bad, but the screenshots disagree, who is telling the truth?

But we'll see, downloading now.
(anyone want to put up a petition for Looking glass to return? System Shock 3? Real Thief 3?)
Edit: The only good thing they've added is the new shadow system. The rest of the original series they have completely r**ed. Water, gone. Rope arrow, gone. The old 'cleaner looking' engine, gone. Just to name a few.

It's definately thief. Look and feel are very close. You won't be disapointed...probably.

Ion Storm is mostly made up of former Looking Glass and Origin employees, so whoever told you it's not Thief because it's from a different developer is full of crap. Maybe it's different anyways, but maybe it's different in a good way.

Yes, I suppose it's just not Thief without the water segments, which were about as fun as eating razor blades, or the incredibly stupid looking and unintuitive rope arrows. Lots of rapage there. I have no idea what you mean by "cleaner looking engine" though.
The water segments were an important part of Thief. Almost every map had diving routes in them. Now...the whole thing happens on dry land. No sewers, no rivers. Rope arrows had a much more realistic 'rogue' feeling in them than the new climbing gloves. And there's no scouting orb.
And by looking at the screenshots, I think I liked the looks of the old engine more.
Plus Thief 3 is made for consoles too, which shows in most games(when they try to please both console and PC players, or they don't have enough time to make two different games, but they let the other part dictate the other. For example if they can't get rope arrows to work in console, they won't add it in PC either)
But hey, I'll see if I like it soon enough.
She's completed it already, and I won't subject her to the heresy of DX:IW. I'm running out of games she'll like; she's not into the heavy-violence stuff (Painkiller type shooting sprees) and she likes some sort of plot (even though most games naff up the ending). I've got her to try out Morrowind, but I'm not sure that's her cup of tea.
Anyway.
You can kill people in Expert mode, if I read the PC Gamer preview right - BUT that's because you select the objectives you want to complete. I don't mind that.
My concerns are similar to Dread's: will they smudge the beautiful gameplay of Thief to appeal to more people? The preview hinted at the fact that fights are easier, which on its own (same with lack of rope arrows) isn't neccessarily a bad thing. Added together, however, these niggles could dampen the experience, the same way they did to DX:IW.
I won't be trusting the PCG review if it's done by Kieron Gillen, since he refuses to accept that some games weren't as good as they were pitched to be (B&W, DX:IW).
Edit: I downloaded a corrupt file. Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaahahaahahah
ahahahhahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaaaaaa.
Snidely, did she play Planescape: Torment already? Admittedly not in any way FP, but if she likes plots...
Also, This is a great thread on DX:IW.
Oh well, so much for the game having any challenge. Killing people is what made the normal and hard dificulties of the original thief way too easy. Now it may as well be annother FPS as far as I'm concerned, at best it might be like Deus Ex, which I didn't like (again, too easy when you can kill everybody).
Five more minutes until the demo is downloaded, so can someone answer me this: though the demo only includes one mission, does it also have "The City" free-play mode in it too?
I never really got a chance to play the first two, so I can't compare the third with them, but I did like it. It was fun. Though it was quite hard to go all psycho and kill everything that moved. I managed though.
One complaint would be the incredibly stupid AI. As in, I shoot them with an array, they go "what was that?" in classic metal gear fashion. And no matter what darkness you're in and whatever direction they were facing when they get shot, even if you're like up on a ledge, they instantly know where the arrow came from that hit them. Also the damage model is a bit wacky, cause I shot a guy in the face with an arrow point blank and he didn't die. Stealth games where you have low hit points are supposed to let you kill the people w/o the arrows a pop...

Get her Splinter Cell and SC: Pandora Tommorrow. I finally got around to getting them, and they really are brilliant games.
But I did kill that damned rat that was nearby!
On that note, the new glow effect is terrible. I liked it more when the models just brightened.
And yeah, the glow looks horrible. I get a feeling its intended to look a lot better on newer cards w/ better shaders.
Edit: And the Thief II demo was WAAAY better than this. It was a custom mission, not the tutorial from the actual game.
And even though it was a demo, you could still buy equipment. In this demo, nothing. Not even extra Water Arrows.
Maybe we should go ask for the rights and make a Thief HL mod...

It's not innovation that scares me - it's the "streamlining" that happened to DX:IW. While IW was okay, it suffered from its stripping down. If they're too afraid to maul the core gameplay of Thief, then so much the better. Hopefully, this time the download won't be corrupt...
My mother only really likes third-and-first person. She just can't get into overhead or isometric-view games. She's mainly interested in adventure and prefers to be immersed. For example, she didn't take to Never Winter Nights, but did to Tomb Raider 1 and Prince of Persia: Sands of Time. It needs to have a gradual learning curve, as she's a bit nervous about her skills. I'm not sure she'd appreciate Planescape that much, which is a shame - I'm going to have my little sister try that instead, once I've finished weaning her into RPGs (Pokemon -> Final Fantasy VII -> Chrono Trigger -> KOTR -> Planescape is the plan. She's just started on CT).
it is indeed theif, just becuase it doesn't have rope arrows (we don't know if it doesn't have water or not) doesn't mean its not thief, the AI is auctaly pretty decent considering, but the whole point of thief is to stealth not just killing people with arrows ;p
Make no mistake, this is Thief, but the gameplay has been changed. The main differences are the better AI, locational damage, and real time lighting. I'll leave you to decide whether these are improvements or not. The melee combat has also been changed. In some ways it's less clumsy than the original (no more wacky collision detection), but you can no longer block, and there doesn't seem to be any way to know if you actually hit someone. It's not so bad, as it just serves to encourage sneaking around instead of killing everyone.

Ah, DOOManiac, ever the nub. You can kill people with one arrow to the head, you just have to make sure they aren't "alert" when you do so.

'Twas the way it's always been, d00m. If you think this is a weird case of locational damage, try playing the first two
Anyways, that's mighty good to hear. I'm getting the demo as we speak!

Knocking people out by jamming a blackjack up their bum. Ahh, good times.
My PC is too crappy for this, but according to all the previews, the AI is different depending on your difficulty setting. On hard, they supposely do full area searches even if they spot something small like a slightly rotated chair. I so need an upgrade. D:
However, I had a poor time playing the demo, because all the shadows flickered, disappeared, there were holes in walls everywhere, and holes in shadows as well (if that makes sense). I would get a screenshot, but I don't know how.
I read the readme, and found that it said "If you own a Radeon 8500 (which is mine), then you may experience intro and menu distortion (which I did). This does not affect in-game play. (Except it did)" So yeah, I'm pretty sore over that. Anybody else have this problem?
EDIT: But I do like the glow effect. It looks cool to me.
