Do you happen to have a link to a download with no registering/line?

XSI 3.5 = free, designed for development of HL2... again, uber-confusing

can I get dl links for all these?

I can't figure out MS3D at all... hell, I understand most of Einsteins theory's better! 0o

its VERY VERY easy to use, i make all my models in it then export them over the 3ds max. i do that because rhino is a nurb modeling program but suports 3ds. and max just has better render modes.

i made an entire laser rifle once (full workings) within under 20 mins with this program. i swear it makes everything else look bloody hard. when i tried using maya and 3ds max i ha no clue what i was doing, with rhino i figured out everything in mins without touching the help button!

    highly suggest this program.

ps. best part is when u goto export you can increase or decrease the polies in the model!!!! this means you can do like 2 million poly concept models then export them with 25000 (or if your insane, bring it down to 10) polies, and stilll keep the detail in most of the model!!!!!!

Can you tell me where to get Rhino? So I can learn modeling?

*wishes he could merge his two posts together*

rhino is not that great :\ I've used it and i suggest start learning in either milkshape or max. Not rhinocerous

I did not really find it easy to use, and it seemed pretty difficult to create simple structures. Poly by poly in milkshape owns rhino's nurbs modelling.

    Oh, well it dun matter.

I'm gonna try XSI out. I'm HOPING the tuitorials are as good as they have been made out to be

cause the MS3D ones SUCKED... maily cause they didn't use the default settings (for example, my grid size was WAAAAY different than theirs...)

Just to clarify, neither XSI 3.0 or XSI 3.5 are free, or were ever free.

The old EXP learning edition ( free ) was a restricted version of XSI 3.0, the EXP for Halflife2 ( also free ) is a restricted edition based on XSI 3.5, minus things like multi cpu rendering etc.

btw be warned, while apps like Maya and XSI are far more powerful than Milkshape, they're also a helluva lot more complex..

Rhino is awesome for things that you don't plan on putting in a game. (other than rendering a scene and making a picture out of it)

If you are really good with rhino you can make lower poly stuff, but the fact is that rhino is good at high poly things. (not saying that it sucks at low poly things, but it does a very good job on the high poly things. primarily non-organic objects).

Definately get MS3d. it's hella cheap and allows you to control your 3d model to its fullest. use something else to render and skin it though... because ms3d has no rendering support and its texturecoordination-editor is not intended to be used for skinning.
I use ms3d, and love it. (I have also used rhino and 3dsmax, but I prefer ms3d for games).
    Here's some stuff I've made in MS3d: http://www.sharemore.com/andahintofred/_private/renders.html
(rendered in MAX. but remember that you don't need to render something to put it into a game... you could just grab POVray for free if you want to render.)

now that I think about it... I should make a tutorial for ms3d... yes yes.

grid sizes? try zoom. if you have a mousewheel (most do) you can use it to zoom in and out. the grid respectivly changes sizes.

just dl XSI EXP, rox the house.

It comes with male and female character rigs as primitives...i.e. u select get -> primitive -> male rig

and it'll load up a male skeleton, and can do it with the muscle system supported in hl2.

Plus it copes with piping your content straight into hl2 engine. Animation in excellent too.

Rotoscope is awesome...turns 2d image into 3d poly, or so i've read (similar to maya's system -> but without depth images)

XSI is no more complicated than MAX, except i can't figure out the boolean system in XSI EXP at the mo. I click boolean -> intersection and it dont do shite...haven't done the tutorial for it tho. Plus, u dont really need booleans in XSI, so many ways round it.

Subdivision of edges saves so much time too, bridge polys makes handles a piece of poo. Extrude along curve is a godsend for perfect banana clips, and p90 style handles.

i just tried xsi for the seconed time and now i remembered why i uninstalled it in the first place its probably good to go to xsi from milkshape but if your going from 3dsmax its COMPLETELY different 5 min of it and i went insane and uninstalled it

XSI also require a screen resolution of 1280x<whatever the other number is)

my crappy monitor only does 1024x768 so it doesnt show the screen properly

rhino dosent have polys, its all nurbs, so highpoly and low poly has no meaning. U cant use it for any game modeling, its all industrial design or scenery

for low res xsi u can dload custom ui's at xsibase.com

U can actually still just run it in 1024x768 without having to download nething.

I did for a while until i updated graphics drivers.
