Most of the computers at my school have Rhino on them, and its a pretty nice program, it seemed easy enough to use. Though I did have problems trying to skin my model, and figuring out some other simple things as well.

I'm fooling around with lightwave some, and maybe I'll finally be able to contribute to the community.

From my general observation, I think that Max is quicker and easier to model in but you are more likely to end up wasting polies as the program does a fair bit of the work. I myself use milkshape and I find that as you are more or less forced to work on a vertex basis that you produce lower poly models of equal quality to someone of equal skill who uses Max though they take longer to produce.

I got Wings3D, since after going to some other forums (specificaly the Neotokyo one), it seemed to be pretty good, and well, free. I like it so far, so I think I might end up using it.

  • ChronoChrono Local flyboy Join Date: 2003-08-05 Member: 18989Members
chadypu you can do the 30 day trial of 3dsmax to practice a bit see if you like it then try and get del to tell you where he got his from

and i suggest you other guys stop talking of warez or else the thread will be locked

Just do a tutorial. I did the boombox one the other night.

U can get awesome models for low polies.

I'm off to use it more i <3 it.

XSI is the devil to me. Takes 10 minutes to start on a 3.8GHz P4 with 1024MB RAM. It took 4 hours to install too. Evilness.

    Weird.

    Go AMD i say!

Ne wayz. One thing that is annoying me is that i can't figure out how to set the background image, but thats about it. The context menu (rmb) is quality.

The extruding along nurbs curves makes cool shapes a doddle,

But so far, all my models have been ridiculously out of proportion to the real weapon, as I can't actually get a background image to be displayed.

    ne ideas?

if you cant get the image to display on the BG, you might try getting some transparencies and print out the pic, then tape it to your screen.
  • TheUdderOneTheUdderOne Join Date: 2004-05-04 Member: 28471Members
Well i found summat called ren...summat or other. Apparently turns a 2D image into a 3D model, but it works for displaying an image in the background.

Unfortunately, u cant zoom in like in 3d max, can't find a lock zoom/pan or match bitmap function so for now, nething i produce in XSI might be a bit unrealistic, but whatever.

Getting better in XSI tho, managed to model an ok-ish looking mp5k.

Did the boombox tutorial too. Quality stuff.

I think MAX is currently the best solution for NS, XSI is defo a hl2 thing. Altho I suppose if u decide to mod for hl2 i'll be able to make sum models, until REDD gets his hands on XSI or summat and then i'll be buggered.

id say 3ds max, just cuz theres so much stuff you can do with it and there's a lot more support for it. however, maya is quite good, if only for its NURBS and fur features (at least tahts all i use). go with max.

Yeah 3DSM seems to be the prime program to use, but the most exspensive... <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif' /><!--endemo-->

I think its marginally cheaper than maya... or you could buy a few new computers for the same price. Or get it through a University.

loads in less then 30 sec for me, and i have a 2.4 ghz p4, somethings wrong with ur pc

xsi kicks ****, just gotta get used to it. Learn shortcuts.

s in xsi=alt for maya (moves camera around)

udder, when u turn on the rotoscope in a view an icon shows up in the camera frame beside the xyz buttons, looks like a box with a line coming from the bottom right corner. Click it and the picture wont move around.

and bashh, yes u can, click on the camera options (default it says wireframe) in the view you want, go to rotoscope and click it. Select an image or video, but make sure u select image pixel ratio 'stead of camera.

maya and xsi beat 3dsmax's anyday, the rendering and animation and customization tools r kickass compared to max, but max's poly tools r pretty straightforawrd, tho once you get familiar with them they are slow, specialy for char modeling. XSI has the best poly tools by default. It has everything. Maya's poly tools can be made better with somethin like mj's poly tools. Max's are pretty good but i havent found any plugin to enhance them.

xsi is the most expensive, followed by maya unlimited then 3dsmax and i think lightwave is the cheapest. XSI 4 however comes in a bunch of flavours and costs around max's price but u dont get all the hair and particles and crap like that.

for those who don't know: <a href='http://www.edharriss.com/' target='_blank'>http://www.edharriss.com/</a> hundreds of xsi tuts.

As fish pointed out above Edharriss has a <i>lot</i> of tutorials for XSI, a couple of other places you might want to browse for tutorials, tools, plugins and such are..

    <a href='http://www.highend3d.com/xsi/' target='_blank'>http://www.highend3d.com/xsi/</a>

    and

    <a href='http://www.xsibase.com/' target='_blank'>http://www.xsibase.com/</a>

btw, Fish speaks the truth about learning the shortcuts.

Modelling in XSI with shortcuts = Complete win, almost as fast as Wings3d
Modelling in XSI <i>without</i> shortcuts = Hell..

    Oh yeah, I use XSI
