Personally I find a mixture of layer blending techniques such as bevelling, having a drop shadow and an internal glare(or whatever it is called) can look just as good. This can also be applied directly to the text, enabling you to move the text around much easier. I'd knock an example together and give you some values but I'm not at my own computer at the moment. I may edit this post in a couple of days to give you an example.
Also I noticed you used a bitmap style font. You are going to struggle to get a boxy font like that to look like it was engraved/pressed even if you are fairly good.
hmm, cant let this thread die, its too much fun. i really liked that video, it helped on some stuff that needed tweakin tho the hole msn messenger and all was pretty distracting
The only thing I'd say about that "skin" is that the blood splats don't extend over the text. This could be overcome by making them the top layer and using a suitable blending method. Afterall, the blood would be on top of all the metal would it not?

SKinning is triky at first, but you'll get it. Just make your selection, copy and past it onto another layer, darken it up a bit, then ably your lighting at the bottom of groove like you have in the pic.
I'm screwing around still but I'm getting the hang of it. I basically copied exess' skin from one of the links on the second page. I need a new mesh so i can do it by myself. I'm pretty pleased.. something like 20-25 mins work then i got bored
i made a tut too, from a while ago, it's uploaded on t2k but i believe they are experiencing some problems? I'll upload to my own host.....

For some reason my skins don't look that good when applied to a weapon... anyway I must admit, got alot better at metal and such just thanks to this thread... You can also create REAL camoflages with a neat filter, without envolving sponge... sponge makes it look wierd, not like actually camo. Just grab a black image, render clouds with Grey/black as colors. Then, search for cutout in the filters and toy with gradients to get the colors you want.
PS: Sorry about the stripe, this was for a contest, but I entered 3 other camos instead

nice, but the hightlight on the long groove needs to be brought up and to the left. Too big now...other than that, very nice. Love the spring, but maybe a little less bright...
Ok, I said I'd have a go to try and show you what I meant and here it is.
Done using Photoshop, I created a basic metal texture using a few layers. I then just added text to the bottom layer of a similar colour to the metal.
Go into the layer's blending options for the layer with the text in it. Add a drop shadow in a colour slightly lighter than your basic metal colour of distance 2, spread 0 and size 0. I also changed the opacity of the shadow to around 75%. This gives you the edge where the light is catching.
Now add an inner shadow that's darker than the metal colour. Give it distance of 2, choke of 0% and size of 2. I dropped the opacity to 90%.
That's all I used to give the text the embossed effect. It's pretty easy to do and gives you a pretty good effect. You just need to fiddle about with the colours and opacity values a bit to get it looking just right.
Oh and make sure the layers above it use low opacity values or using the overlay blending affect or something like that so you can actually see the text through it

Thanks for the input guys, I did think it was a bit too close to green spectrum.
