Ok, i've read shite loads of tutorials and i still suck at it.
Basically, I've made the image below in an attempt to cover common things that u might skin (like the grooves on a colt slide, etc.)
The annoying thing is the raised or indented text.
I really want a stamped effect like there would be if the metal had been stamped in the factory.
Ne ideas?

Link may be lame but meh.

in adobe- start with filters to get a metal effect
filter>Render>Clouds> artistic>sponge-0.0.1
Image>ajustments>brightness/contrast set brightness to about -10 then contrast to - 40
reading a tut on basic metal would be a better idea -with the lighting aswell
then using the text tool write in wotever u want
then using the dodge tool and go around 1 side depending on wot angle u want the light sourse to be comeing from check pics below
sorry bout bad pic quallity had to enlarge pic
and behold crppy text !
dark text as top layer, light text as under layer, slightly offset in the right direction considering your lightsource...
use a bigger and bolder font than that... it's worth it.

Yeap. That's much easier and gives a better look. Depending on the background, setting the text layer to Overlay works nicely too.
Ouch?
Thanks guys, other stuff looks ok tho?
[edit:I adjusted the opacity on the lower/lighter layer of text to like 50-40% or lower]
Do the colt-like grooves look ok tho?
Also, unless that long thing is supposed to be a hole (which it shouldn't be, as its a groove), its too dark. Just duplicate the layer, make your selection, then delete everything else. Then just darken that selection a bit, do your shading and highlighting and it will be much better).
make your layer (im guessing your using photoshop) of text, or solid black logo, etc.
hold control and click that layer in the layer box. it should select the contents. now delete that layer but leave the selection. go back to editing the backgound layer. nows heres the tricky part. there are MANY different directions for your light. but heres whats most common. with your selection on the base layer, use the burn tool on a really large brush and bout 45 exp. completely fill your selection. now on the keyboard press the down arrow once or twice and then right the same amount. now for engravings, use the dodge tool on large brush and fill that selection. for a hole, get black as your foreground color and press alt+backspace. heres short, un narrorated video of what i mean... tell me if its of any use..im plannining on making a lot of tutorial videos on all such of things in the future. click here
edit: merchant posted as i did... i like that blood! any idea where i can d/l some nice grunge brushes, or how to reset my brushes? cuz i pick a different a categorie of brush and it lost the defaults :o
