nah its a nice site for a good collection of maps but the vote system needs work (no i have no suggestions but its to easy to cheat or rate someone maps really bad)

nsworld is actually a good resource. I think one of the ways to "fix" the rating system problems is with a registration system. I know no one likes it, but at that point you could have a registered user ranking and a public map ranking. Would make the registered user ranking less affected by stupidity/flaming. Dunno why someone would do that anyways, but there we are.

Also might be nice to see a "link to forum thread" section where mappers could post a link to the forum thread about that particular map. Just an idea there though.

Thanks for all the work CA, and where have you been anyways?

its a good place to keep yer maps, a good source of them.. but yes, the rating system is so messed up, all good maps are thrown down to the bottom never to be seen. The whole look of the site looks kinda cheezy, not quite sure how to explain it, but it doesn't look all that great.

Alurcard2, I'll add fixing that to my todo list

Reese, A registation system would be about as easy to fool as the rating system it has now. With the relatively low number of actual voters it's very easy for clans (from the context of the maps / style of comments) even small ones to strongly influence the voting.

I've been working as a team member for the Rival Species HL mod. Pop in there and see my work.

ssjyoda, I'm inclined to think your just bitching because your map wasn't good enough to make the top 20.

i say u take out the rating system and keep the comment bar.. take out the top 20 maps, and make all the maps in ONE list, so this way, no one is worried about if people like thier map or not (like they shouldnt be) lol

ChromeAngel,

I've not notice that you allow to mirror thumbnails or screen shots until today...

Either thats new and its sweet... or its an old feature, and I'm retarded.

either way, cheers!

BlackPlague,
NS World used to have all it's maps in one list (which you can still get at from the menu), however it was changed to the current format for the front page because it took too long to load.

ShenTraX,
That's an old feature that was taken out due to a problem on the server I was unable to get fixed. The fact that is back and apparently working (although not quite as it was intended to) is actually a oversight introduced in this latest set of revisions. If I can make it work correctly the feature will stay if not it will be taken out again. Any screenshots already uploaded will be kept where they are regardless of if the feature is kept or dropped.

Everyone,
Speaking of latest revisions the issues with firefox users not seeing all the images and netscape users not being able to use the search should now be remedied.

Sadly Netscape's inability to re-flow the document means you won't get the fancy menu effect that IE users get (can anyone tell me if that's working in firefox? or should I only enable it for IE?). To replace the menu effects everyone should now get tooltips for the sidebar menu items.

Personally, I don't like NS World's voting system. When someone gives a map thumbs down, with a dozen two thumbs up, and that gets knocked down to below 80%, there's something wrong with it. What sort of math are you using, Chrome? Fuzzy logic?

Just a thought...

The votes are weighted 0 (2 thumbs down) to 4 (2 thumbs up), the average weight of all the current votes is then multiplied by 25 to get the %age. The only exception to this rule is maps with no votes which are assumed to be "average" and given a 50% rating.

If you can show me a map whose rating does not conform to this I will fix it.

I like ns world and have put all my maps up on it.

I have only 4 points about the site that i think you should seriously consider changing:

-<> Tutorial submissions.
Have a nice tutorial submission area.

-<> Index the maps so that they are easier to find.
You could easily take the existing data and list the categories:

Map type: combat or classic
Map Play type: MvM, AvA, MvA
Show only Maps with pictures: Yes/no
Show only Maps with downloads: Yes/no

You could also add a few categories such as:

setting: outdoor, indoor

-<> Get some more trustworthy reveiwers and spotlight maps.
once a month or week would be cool even with a 1 paragraph reveiw.

-<> Make a rating spam filter.
Lots of maps (including 1 of mine) are spammed to get bad ratings. If you make filters that allow you to administrate the reveiws based on a word list it would be a good idea. That way you can remove peer reveiws that are obviously spam (such as ones that contain profanity and are obviously spam).

might want to look at another map site to mb get some ideas such as: http://www.cs-maps.org/

Avitar,
Thank you for suggesting these ideas.

I particularly like the idea of a tutorials submission, but i'm not sure that their are enough tutorials writers about to make it worthwhile. Certainly if anyone has a tutorial they would like to see on NS World they need only draw my attention to it.

As for indexing the maps the existing "Map Finder" feature almost does what your asking for. You can certainly search on keywords in the maps description and for downloads. I just haven't got around to adding a search on map type yet.

Getting map reviews out of the NS community is like getting blood out of a stone! Reviewers only ever seem to review 1 map then are never heard from agian
Maybe i've got a crummy review submission system or maybe i've got crummy reviewers...

The moderators just got a tool for searching reviews for keywords with this recent update (that's why a load of map ratings went haywire this week as I deleted out any unsuitable comments). However original profanity has never been my strong point so their may be some will have been missed. Hopefully the improved tool will encourage the other moderators to do their job more often...

In summary it doesn't matter what features are added to the site if the people using it are no good.

Wither,
