Gamma settings

As much as I'd like to play the game, every time I join a server, it changes my gamma settings so that the game is entirely too dark to be playable. The settings that are changed are the ones for my video card, not the in game gamma settings. I had the gamma adjusted to what it says it should be in the gamma config that came with the mod.

It only does this in NS, and not any other HL mods I have.

Specs:
Athlon XP 1600+
512MB DDR RAM
GeForce2 MX400
Detonator drivers, 30.82
Windows XP Professional

I as well am having the same problem. I'm playing on an old monitor that can't be adjusted very much so I rely on my video card's settings to brighten my screen. NS seems to override these settings and I am unable to see anything.

There is something very wacky about your PC's video cards or drivers. For NS players, the gamma changes that place make your screen much brighter, not darker.

I suggest you run the 'Tune Monitor for Optimal Gamma' from your Natural Selection start menu and follow it's instructions. if you are still having problems, reply back here. Also, when you post about a video problem, you need to tell us about your hardware the way n0t did, oherwsie we cannot help you.

It's not the video cards or the drivers. It has to be certain older monitors that do this. I'm assuming this because of what was said in this related post -> http://www.natural-selection.org/cgi-bin....;t=7612

    I've got
    Duron 1ghz
    256 mb DDR RAM
    Geforce2 TI w/ latest detonator drivers 3.0.8.2
    WinXP Pro

This happens with most newer games. My monitor goes very dark when first starting the game but you're able to adjust the gamma in-game. Unfortunately NS has no option to do so. Half-Life and every other mod I've played for Half-Life work great.

See, its just NS that does this, no other games have ever done it. As I have an older monitor, I've had to use the driver settings to adjust the gamma to make my screen brighter. Natural Selection sets these settings back to zero(or default) when I join a server. I've never had another game do this.

Also, the gamma in the video options for HL is set to max, and it is still not bright enough to play.

let me shed some light onto this with my problem for it is probly your problem; The defualt setting for my screen is very low even with the moniter raised so i ahve to go into my computer-controllpannel-display-settings-advanced-color.
thats how you raise it, well when i start a game of NS it reverts back to the defualt and its so low that i cant play i mean I CANT PLAY so one way i say is to delet the overgamma thingy but i dont know what to delet or if its part of NS's code *note* quake3 did this to me but i could raise quakes gamma befor i went into a game

The gamma should be INCREASING not DECREASING which is what MonsE said. Is everyone sure they have the latest drivers for their graphics cards? And sometimes monitors have drivers too... Make sure you get those as well.

ok, i have the exact same problem as you guys, but now i have found a solution.
I use a geforce 2 card, so i'm not sure if this will work for non nvidia card users. But nvidia card users can definitely try it out.
Go and download RivaTuner. It's an awesome tweak program for nvidia cards. Set your gamma setting to brighten your monitors IN THIS RivaTuner. You don't have to do anything to your OS system gamma settings, as they will be reverted back to default when NS is run no matter what, which makes NS looks like movie Pitch Black. However, the gamma settings in the RivaTuner will not be reverted. So go ahead and enjoy the game.
    hope this helps

Thanks Hudson, I'll give it a try.

Nope, no luck. I'm going to try changing to different drivers, possibly the 40. series. Apparently this is an issue with the 30.82 drivers and Windows XP, not just NS.

Ok. Updated to 40.72. Gamma problem fixed. However, now I have a new problem. I get this wonderful green radioactive looking stuff all over when trying to play. In both D3D and OpenGL modes. Again, only happens in NS, not any other mods or games.

In my case NS turns everythign up way too bright, it's so bright i have to turn down the brightness and fool around with the contrast to be able to open my eyes, but even when doing so, it's still no near how it should look. This has only happened on NS so far, all other games and mods run great so i assume the built in gamma adjustment is turnine my already nice brightness up to rocketlevels. It's a bit annoyign having to turn down and reconfigurate the brightness and contrast everytime im to play NS.

And btw my monitor is fairly new, whetever that matters
