New Savage 2.0

ElderwyrmElderwyrm Join Date: 2003-04-07 Member: 15296Members
There is a new version of Savage: The Battle for Newerth out. It fixes various bugs, increases performance by twofold, and fixes the netcode.

For those of you who don't know, Savage is a game with a concept similar to NS. There are 2 teams that operate quite differently (Beast and Human), each team has a commander, and you gather resources and advance in tech.

With the new netcode you don't have you lead your shots and it plays like a real FPS now. They have also added 2 new buildings and 2 new units. The new units are healer classes that can heal your allies and give them protection buffs. (The new buildings are the prerequisites for the healer units)

A new demo has been released for 2.0 so if you've never played Savage I'd suggest you give it a try.

    .....

LAst I played (just be fore release) there was just about jack and squat different between beast and human (well beasts where ALOT better).

The units are basicaly the same thing, just .... different

it would be like if NS had Skulks and recons, Gorges and engies, Lerks and JPers, Fades and Teleporting Rines, Oni and Tanks.....

This is not so much basing as curious if they actualy made the races segnificantly different?

    I get like 5 fps in savage <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif' /><!--endemo-->. Its to ram intensive.

Yeah, it IS a huge improvement over 1.whatever. Though, it seems harder to level up now...

NOTHING is RAM intensive. RAM just helps you load. Its probably your graphics card or processor being slow. I personally get 80fps with my kickass Graphics card...

(and yes, I know what I'm talking about. Only difference in performance between going from my old 256mb of SDRAM to my new 1280MB of DDRRAM was a speed up in load times)

Oh, and on topicness: Yeah, 2.0 is cool and all, but you can tell a lot of people are using cheats for it already.

    What are you talking about?

Its entirely possible to have a Pentium 4 overclocked to 5 GHz, and an overlocked Radeon 9800XT and still lag in a game if you only have something like 256MB of RAM. Just play Planetside with that config - I guarantee you itll be almost unplayable.
  • NessNess Join Date: 2002-12-17 Member: 10935Members, Reinforced - Onos
An example of this might be my computer and Counter-Strike. I recall taking out two sticks of memory, reducing my RAM to 64 megs, and trying to play Counter-Strike. Instead of the normal 80-100 fps, I'm barely running it. Of course, this isn't with a 3 ghz computer, not that it should matter in this argument, if RAM is only supposed to help with load times.

You realise when things are overclocked to something bigger, not only does it ruin them, but it doesn't do much better?

And yes, I've played Planetside during the transition too. No difference for me.

Or maybe I'm just special. *cough cough*.
  • weggyweggy Join Date: 2003-06-04 Member: 16998Members
True, it is a small increase. But theres something about pushing your system to the limit thats extremely gratifying. Squeeeezing out every last FPS you can from your card.

And overlocking only ruins stuff if you dont do it right. IE, not getting an adequate heat sink/fan.
  • QuaunautQuaunaut The longest seven days in history... Join Date: 2003-03-21 Member: 14759Members, Constellation, Reinforced - Shadow
Half the time the "Adequate" heat sink/fan cost more than it would to buy new stuff.
  • Crono5Crono5 Join Date: 2003-07-22 Member: 18357Members
Well, that defeats the purpose. You're not "squeezing every ounce of performance" out if you get new stuff, you're "giving it a much bigger lemon/orange to squeeze". What he's saying, if I'm not mistaken, is that it's worth spending upwards of $100 for adequate cooling as long as you get five frames more that you'll never notice in games where you need that performance to play (online) ^_ ^ I keed, I understand what you mean, but even with adequate cooling, overclocking can still make a card die out before its time. I'd just buy a Radeon 9800 XT.

Exactly. If you've got the money to throw that stuff around, fine, but I think if you wanted to ruin hardware a hammer is much better for the job than a PC's BIOS.

Here is a screen from probably the absolute best game I ever played of savage. The time limit was 90 minutes and It was down to about 7 minutes. We had a horrible start, and I was commanding. Basically I tech rushed and it cost us a lot in resourves but in the end we won. I had to hop out of our stronghold and fend off some pesky nomads that were sodomizing it. Anyway here is a pic.

Its me finishing off the enemy stronghold.

Eh. The game is missing the one thing that would make teamwork 10x better: Voice comm. Maybe they should take UT2k4's lead, and put in a text-reader, cause that would help too.

My main problem with the game (only played the demo) is that there's a lack of overview. Being a grunt, you have no idea what's happening, and it seems you have no influence on what's going on either.

True, there's the "building under attack", but it fails to tell me WHAT building. There's the nice voice telling you what's going on in ALMOST adequate details, but half the messages aren't logged to the text, so in the middle of the battle I'm blind to team status.

Having played UT2k4 onslaught, I just know it's possible to do so much better. Allright, skybeams wouldn't really fit in savage, but the map would be nice.

Well, there are skybeams, commander "waypoints" create them. The reason you might not have seen many is a lack of officers. They direct the "traffic" and provide a minor regeneration rate increase to surrounding troops. If you are playing with decent players you wil see skybeams.

True, but not when buildings are under attack. What I'm talking about is the skybeams that hover over EVERY powernode that is open to attack, and the ripples running up said skybeams when a powernode is being attacked. In Savage, I kind of had the feeling that I had to fight for information, rather than fight the enemy. That's not good.

The beasts are VERY dift now, you should try it. There are many many discussions about balance etc. which is good, it means they are extremely different.

They nerfed some weps in the new release and increased some others. They also added healers/shamans to ressurect and shield others etc along with unbelievable ground shaking effects and near point wep sound effects so you can tell how close the shots are to your head etc.

Go give the demo a try, don't be discouraged if you don't get it right off the hop. It takes quite a bit to get the game in the big picture. Skybeams are present, and you will get to know all the action after some hard ramp up. But that is what makes it so much fun and long lasting fun is the steep ramp up.

BTW the community is quite strong and they will post back almost immediately to your questions or help.

    Come out and see us!!

NOTHING is RAM intensive. RAM just helps you load. Its probably your graphics card or processor being slow. I personally get 80fps with my kickass Graphics card...

BTW there are NO CHEATS FOR SAVAGE....

trust me, look for the forums about this topic, the worst you will get is people complaining about keybinds etc.

Anyone that complains during the game in chat is considered a noob,bc they get owned and have to complain about being killed.

    People are just that good.

I couldn't get into Savage. I really didn't like it.

Perhaps I'm just not cut out for its hack-n-slash kinda gameplay.
  • SwiltSwilt Join Date: 2004-05-11 Member: 28605Members
I guess it takes allot of play to really get into it and understand the team aspect. That is when it gets real addictive. The feeling of being part of the team and knowing what you are doing to advance the cause with you coms help makes it VERY addicting.

I personally am not good at melee, but am very strategic and make significant advances for my team when I play through these actions. (sneaking and building a forward garrison, retaking flags, destroying buildings by hand, using siege weapons strategically instead of randomly to support forward advancement of troops, lots of stuff).

try it for awhile and try to get the bigger pic and talk to people during game. You will learn to like it I believe.
