2.Won (for the 250% that uses standard HL online system)

You obviously don't have a clue what you are talking about, otherwise you would know why they are going over to Steam.

BTW 3.0 is only a BETA, if you hate Steam that much go play with the minority left playing 2.01...

If im not mistaken NS 3.0 is compatible with WON, someone even made a zip file with all the correct files to get it to work on WON, since normally you need steam installed to get it to install.

As for steam hate it gets locked awfully fast round here, so unless you have some constructive reason why you hate steam, keep it to yourself.

I can't say for sure, but it's doubtful that there will be a "won only" version again.
Steam is what everything is migrating to. If you don't like it, don't come here to complain about it - we've heard it enough.

Can you give reasons for your hating of steam?? I used to be as you are but i must admit this is far superior to the won way of doing things.

There are a few bugs and patch hiccups but they arent life threatening.

Have you even tried playing on steam?

steam doesn't have the advanced filter options of 3rd party scanner software.
steam doesn't ask you if you want to download a 400MB game that you haven't bought.
steam is run by 2 people

apart from that im good with steam.
  • ZenZen Join Date: 2004-05-07 Member: 28524Members
First it takes like 30min to update the steam
Then you have to download lots files to make it work!
And i cant see anything difrent in the game play!

Yes it does ask you, and even if you ignored it by mistake, you can easily stop it.

I don't like of Steam either, but what can you do? This, of course, irks the most.

Anyway; it *does* have some good sides. The messaging system is better (clearer fonts), troubles with sound and ALT+F4 are marginal, better mic-support and new resolutions (great for TFT users).

However, I think what pisses off most people, including me, is the way how the software acts. Nothing is asked; a little while ago it even INSTALLED Counter-Strike to my machine, in all silence, and then advertised "Condition Zero." Yeah, right -deleted both CS and the AD right after.

Then there is the matter of bad customer support and oh-so-silent updates... Oh, well...

You can choose not to download a certain game or update it.

Third party third party scanner softwares work with steam.
    Almost everyone is using steam.

I was slightly annoyed that Condition Zero automatically started downloading when I had specifically told it not to only moments earlier.

Other than that, its much better than WON.

QUOTE

First it takes like 30min to update the steam

1: That might be because thousands of people are updating at exactly the same time. It might be a little inconvienent, but if you wait a day or so, you will find it is much faster due to less people downloading.

2: This is no different than having to download a patch for a game. In fact its actually easier because it knows what files you need to update, and you dont have to search the internet looking for them.

3: It wasnt designed to alter game play. The friends network is a nice addition though. (when it works)

That's because we were all told that WON was dead within weeks of the first Steam release.

    =====

Yes, there are only two people working on Steam. An interview was conducted by some Half Life fans, who met the staff of Valve. Which included the two Steam testers.

    =====

At the moment I am frustrated with the way the Friends list is handled. I don't like that I have to join the people in-game to get their Friends list, rather than looking at the Server Info and getting it from there.

I also don't like that players have to be connected to Friends for them to show up as playing in a game - I'd rather it have an option to show people with similar names, like All Seeing Eye does.

I miss having the ability to open Half Life and click on any mod and have it immediately change to that mod (including when connecting to a server). Now, if I'm playing The Specialists, I have to quit the game entirely before opening up the new mod to connect to a server. It's quite time consuming, and only serves to break up the flow that used to exist in the game GUI.

This problem really showed its ugly head when a friend on my Friends list asked me to play Day of Defeat, while I was playing The Specialists. I couldn't click "Join Game" on the Friends list to join the server he was on - instead I had to close down The Specialists entirely, and THEN click on the Friends list to join the game.

I don't mind steam, minus it has some retarded problems at times, eg bugs being reintroduced but oh well

only thing I hate is the horrible customer support, valve never once acknowledged the audio bug that would make mods crash...then 2 weeks or more later they finally patched it, that was horrid...

Steam is more than fine in my eyes. Remember WON's first days?

Steam is awesome. Now that bugs are fixed and there are frequent updates improving the game, it's really great. I can't think of any other company that would spend so much money and time creating a completely new UI and server/friends/mods program for a 5-year old game.

Also, this will help mods become even more popular as well as let small upgrades come out and be downloaded by everyone.

You know why i dont like Steam, when i make a lan partiy, we wont be able to play Ns or DoD because not half of the ppl got HL.

With WON we could just could use a keygen and play in the lan and no worry.

Some would buy it after the lan because they had fun, but my girlfried wont buy HL so she could play 1-2 times a year in our lan party...know what i mean ?

I dislike Steam for it's constant screwing up on Friends.

Oh, goodie. Another Steam Hate thread. Apparently someone didn't see when I'd gone through and filled the front page with locked topics like this one, a couple of months back. There should still be screenshots somewhere of the End of Whining.

In short. Steam has some growing pains, yes. But they're FAR less severe than WON's were. The only people b****ing about Steam, are the ones who joined in a year or two AFTER WON was instigated. People who don't remembe being unable to MP for two WEEKS at a time.

Now then. If you'd care to continue whingeing on, feel free to take it to the Steampowered forums. As it stands, NS is not Steam, though it does ride on Steam.
And no... the final release of 3.0 will not be going on with a WON port, given that it's planned to be distributed THROUGH Steam.
