Mouse Problems. Constructive Input Wanted

Recently my MS IntelliMouse (USB-optical) has been all of a sudden un-detected and then a second or two later it gets re-detected.

Usually when I'm a skulk in the middle of combat. when that happens I end up continuing whatever motion i was doing in a straight and easily killable direction.

I have tried using my bluetooth optical mouse and while it doesn't lose detection it seems to suffer greatly from interferance or something because it locks all the time.

I have installed the lates drivers for both mice.

SO my question is:

Any clue as to why my wired mouse is losing connection?

OR

Any idea how to make sure my wireless mouse keeps a good connection?

I think wireless works with hertz soooo if something close transmits the same or close hertz it can bug : Microwave, Tv, the pc itself, cell phone, pager...check surroundings.
Oh and have a good power strip, probably have one already, cos other apliances bugs just by being plugged on same electricity channel.
Other than that, i have a wireless mouse too, but it doesn't work on the pc i want it too work! Anyway good luck i'm no expert.

i know optical mouses work by refreshing the scanner thingie a certain number of times/second...

Make sure this is as high as it can go, whether it can be edited or not i dunno...

Also make sure the lens area under the mouse is clean... im guessing a bad scratch or smudge would mess up the sensor....

i know my optical doesent work on my bare desk at all barely, i HAVE to keep it on a mousepad...

beyond that im not sure but good luck

If you are having the same-ish problem with both mice, it's proably your OS or your motherboard.

I'm a big fan of format c:/s, beyond that you would have to ask some of the driver people here

An optical mouse works by detecting changes in the surface that it's being pushed around on. If the surface is textureless, too bumpy, or too glossy, the mouse is likely to 'lock up' (actually, the mouse is having a hard time detecting movement).

For example, poor surfaces to play on would be:

a desktop with a single color or very distinct color patches, like a 'checkerboard' desktop

stucco (just you try... )

mousepads with shiny surfaces

For the record, I use a cheap Logitech optical mouse, on a wooden desk (slightly bumpy), and no mousepad.

Just to make sure, plug your mouse into it's own USB port. NOT in a hub (I know my keyboard connects via USB and acts as a hub).

I tried to connect my USB headset and USB->PS2 controller port into the keyboard, and it gave me a warning as to not enough power for it all.

Might be the same type of thing happening.. a firefight taxes your computer just enough to futz your USB mouse. :o

    Thank you for your replies.

    To address some issues raised.

The wired mouse looses detection (stops working) and is then redetected (and starts working again)

The wireLESS mouse just goes all choppy in a firefight. (This does not happen while I'm developing or doing any standard 2D work.

Whoever said something about the CPU taking a hit and not keeping up with the mouse may be right as my CPU is a 860MHz P3 Though I've never known HL to care much about processor speed. Video is GF4 Ti4200 which should take most the load off the CPU.

Does anyone know if there is a way to change the band on which the bluetooth works (as suggested above) or not?

i think that would require a new mouse. thr problem probably isn't the frequency (not hertz :P) but the cpu, leave the taskbar open, play a game and 2 seconds after it goes choppy, alt tab and check for 100% usage, that is unless its on constant 100% :P

Actually, I just recently started having the exact same problem with my mouse, also a USB Microsoft optical mouse, and I've heard a few other people over on DoD complaining about the same thing, all within the last couple of weeks, but mine and their's were only doing it in steam. Not in windows, and not in any other games, which leads me to believe that Steam itself is the culprit.

Had the same problem with my USB Intellimouse Explorer - where the wires go into the body of the mouse they had broken/frayed, causing intermitant contact.
Try wiggling the cable around where it enters the body of the mouse, and see if you can get it to disconnect.
I opened the mouse up, cut out about 10cm worth and resoldered it, been fine since.

At work I've got another MS optical mouse.. this one freezes up for a split second, won't let me turn. Have to reboot the machine to get it back. That one seems to be a steam issue.

I've been having problems with my IntelliMouse too! Either there's suddenly a lot of them breaking at once or there's actually a problem.

no idea if you (or any of the others) have tried this - try plugging in a standard PSU mouse (non-optical) and see what happens...

then, see if you can find a psu->USB adapter, and plug it into the SAME port as the opti is going into

try the USB on other games / computers aswell (ideally other computers playing NS ...)

a 800+Mhz comp is not going to be an issue on running an optical mouse ...

whats your FPS in the fight... it's more likely the lag problem is your frame rate not any thing to do with your mouse

It might also be the USB that's causing the problem. Try switching it to a PS/2 connection (There are lots of converters out there, check your local radio shack equivalent).

I know my Microsoft Intellimouse explorer optical hasn't had any problems, and it's USB with a PS/2 converter (It came with it, thankfully.).

    :/
