Tips for d/ling

<div class="IPBDescription">Fileplanet tactics and download accels</div>For those of you who want to get NS as fast as possible here are some options that may have already been mentioned:

Fileplanet subscription: Despite the fact that paying online for something makes me cringe, Fileplanet offers a monthly service that costs pretty low (like 7 bucks or so).  This means you won't have to wait in any lines and you know that the fileplanet servers are pretty damn fast.  So if you want, give it a shot but keep in mind you'll need someone's credit card (unless you have one yourself)

Download Accellerators: Good DAs can shorten an hour or two long download to 30 minutes or less.  I haven't really researched on any good ones so maybe a few guys can reccomend some goodies.

Mirrors!!!: Fileplanet is NOT the only good mirror out there!  So many people seem to go there for one file and the lines show it.  Do the right thing and move away from fileplanet and choose another server.  I won't reccomend any but choosing another mirror can be a lifesaver.  Unless fileplanet is surprisingly empty, do something else.

Well, take it or leave it.  Have fun tommorow.

EDIT: Checked Fileplanet, no weekly service.  Monthly though for around 7 bucks.

Personally, I've found DAs completly useless. All they've done is smoothed the connection so I get a constant 70kb/s instead of it jumping to 69.9kb/s and back again. Oh yeah, and they have resume, which can help you 56kers if you don't want to d/l a file in one go for whatever reason, and can start d/l the file from where you left off.

    Happy d/ling everyone.

Ill stick with the lines or another mirror. I admit Fileplanet pisses me off and makes me impatient. Although Ns is worth it. I have a pretty decent dsl which averages around 24 kb a second which is kinda slow but its faster than 56k. But I live in utah with hardly any dsl support... go figure. So it may take me a little over an hour to dl. Its gonna be great! Ill see you guys after school or whenever its realesed. Staying home from school was unheard of with my parents since im 16 and "need every educated bit i can get". Even though its haloween twomorow and i cant go trick or treating anymore *sniff* but its worth it! Staying home and playing NS!

yeah, if your on 56k MAKE SURE YOU USE GETRIGHT, or something that has a resume button!

I didn't think they would put FilePlanet as a mirror on this.

    And I assume it's not going to happen <!--emo&:D--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':D'><!--endemo-->

    Way to GO! Assplanet go away! <!--emo&:D--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':D'><!--endemo-->

get Download Accellerator Plus, it breaks files up into many small files, allows you to pause downloads, and download from multiple mirrors at once. I DL-ed a 150 meg file that normaly takes 1 hour in under 10 min one time with it!

Fileplanet should have a mirror. They mirrored the servers.
  • MarkMark Join Date: 2002-10-11 Member: 1479Members
fileplanet is a listed mirror for the server files...

Really? I average between 300kb/s-780kb/s on my downloads with my cable connection. It also helps to live in a small town with freshly installed optical lines.

FP makes you wait because it's popular.
It's popular cause it has fast downloads.
It has fast downloads because it makes you wait.

Get an account, wait in line, find another mirror, or don't complain.

This topic has a way of getting threads locked, so we should probably drop it.

    Any questions?

Lol, anyway, I'm just going to find the first US mirror in the list, see if it's responding and getting over 100 kb/s, and stick with it. FP will most likely have lines round the block, so most likely I'll d/l from somewhere else, wherever it may be.

Right now, I'm getting under 5 KB/s, but about two days ago, for a few hours, I averaged <b>over</b> 1 MB/s.
    RoadRunner is Smokinnn.....
well, most of the time, anyway...
  • ReignReign Join Date: 2002-10-27 Member: 1652Members
You'd have to elaborate on why it would get locked because it's already known that FP is a good downloadin' place but the lines do take the cake.

Well 300 kb a sec is pretty average for me. But usually i get 300 to about a gigabyte.

But it really depends on were i am downloading.Thats why im glad Natural Selection is goin to have lots of mirrors to dl from.
  • ReignReign Join Date: 2002-10-27 Member: 1652Members
Yea, unfortunatly I have a sucky shared cable system goin...but hey, its better than using a modem so whatever.  Only problem is that I have a sis who spends a fair amount of time d/lin music and leaves the program on for others to d/l off of.  This means stealth comp-turn-off tactics.

    do you mean a <i>Megabyte</i>?
theres kinda a big difference there.  but that would be cool, I could fill my HDD with various D/Ls in under 2 minutes... thats fast.

File Planet, GOod for: Large downloads
File Planet, Bad for: Small downloads.

Im sorry, but it doesnt make it 'faster' for everyone to wait 58 minutes for a 50k download.
  • Alex7Alex7 Join Date: 2002-04-09 Member: 405Members
I get superb pings, but even on a good day, I rarely get over 5K/sec.

The problem with segmented downloads is that is uses up many times more bandwith than normal, making it take longer for everyone else.  And if everyone used it, you'd be no better off, since each segment would be going that much slower.
  • Shifty_EyesShifty_Eyes Join Date: 2002-10-31 Member: 1784Members
5k/sec would still be faster than waiting an hour. Its bs for small files, if 19812472891 people dl'd it'd still be faster...

Download from Fileplanet?! Thats crazy, im gonna download it from a Swedish halflife site, www.halflife.nu they are going to host it, they said so, <!--emo&:)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'><!--endemo-->

Fileplanet: Good for finding those obscure files NO ONE CARRIES ANYMORE.  <!--emo&:p--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':p'><!--endemo-->

I went to look for the patch and co-op mode for the game Rune and the developers didn't carry it, their biggest fansite didn't carry it, only Fileplanet.

Anyway, yeah, echoing the others that went before me: If you don't like Fileplanet or Gamespy then you don't like.  Don't use it.  Move on with your life.
