How's server performance look?

I know way back you were looking into optimizing server code for best performance, how does that look right now?

Also, does Will Day (Metamod) have all the recent ents for NS?  Will basic Admin Mod be able to support it?

Thanks in advance for your answers. I'm just looking to organize everything I need for a server build so I know what to expect.

I believe that Meta Mod has support for Natural Selection. I think Flayra got into contact with him a few months ago, but if he hasn't there's still time to get support before the release.

Metamod support appears to be working, although we haven't tested it extensively.

You still need a beefier CPU then you do for CS or DOD.  I've worked a lot on this, but there probably going to be HL servers that can't run NS well.

Server performance is extremely high-priority for us, but if you could've seen the work I had to do to get it to where it is now...

There is one large optimization I still have yet to do, that I may try to sneak in for v1.0.  If not, it will be optimized in the near future.

For the record, NS runs in sub 100 ping with 24 players on a 1.67ghz T-bird (T1 Connection).

Alby, you may have already read this, but I'll post it anyway. The basic requirements for an NS server performace wise are:

    150MHZ per Player
32-64 Megs of Ram per Player

The max players you will sensibly be able to run on that is 8, which I suspect would be a bit slow gameplay-wise. If you just want it for a clan practice server, or one for you and your friends it's fine, if you want anything bigger/more public it may be a bit iffy. And then you have to think of your connection....

Nerve, I think you are a bit off on your estimates.

Direct quote from Jammer, who I think knows what he's talking about:

"General HL Rule of Thumb for a DS:
    150MHZ/player
    32-64 Megs of Ram/Player"

Another option, linux only, is to have an old standard HL machine (fast P2 and up) with a MASSIVE swap file. The swap file on my lan server is a 2gb hard drive located on a different IDE channel from the main drive. It's got 320mb of ram, even without the swap drive, and I've been able to host 36+ player DoD games on it with little or no lag at all. I think that with a lower player load, it'll run NS quite nicely.

However, that's just LAN performance. I have no idea how it'd do on an internet connection.
