Marines ( Unlimted Jetpack Power)

TugBoatTugBoat Join Date: 2004-04-22 Member: 28077Members
Hi,

Just wondering why Marines cant have unlimited Jet Pack Power like the Lerks have unlimted flight power?

Am I missing something here, any ideas why these lerks dont lose Adrenaline now? as Flying uses energy, so they should lose energy?

I see many Lerks now... Try shooting 5+ lerks flying around... Madness.

Its because lerks != jp.

And from the history of this game (specifically version 1.04), I'd doubt jp would ever have unlimited fuel.

Yep.

Back in 1.04 where a single jetpacker could solo the hive with an HMG because his FPS gave him infinite fuel pretty much determines that we will never make that mistake again, much to the horror of clanners everywhere who accused anyone who spoke aginst it as "whining".

Yeah, 100fps was the winnah, unlimited would be way overpowered.

See, the Lerk can have unlimited flight for two reasons:

1. The lerks other abilities are fueled from the same pool as its flight power (or at least they were.) So, a Lerk could fly, or use its powers, but not both. This severely limited the lifeform, as well as making adren a mandatory upgrade for any Lerk who actually wanted to fufull its roll (a support unit making things easier for the other aliens.)

2. A Lerk only has access to a fixed pool of weapons. I don't think anyone would argue that bite is equal or better than even the "lowly" shotgun. Replace that with a HMG or GL and the difference grows exponentially. Since the rine can be a much more effective killing machine than the Lerk ever could, he has to have his mobility reduced.

You're forgetting the most basic reason.

Marines have ranged weapons. Aliens don't.

I think they could make one change the jetpack, and that is I need to be able to stop the player mid flight and force them back into the air quicker, a lot of the time people fall only because they are dropping to fast for the jetpack to fight against.

Giving jetpacks unlimited fuel would give them a boost they really don't need. This would change the game dramatically, much like removing the lerk flight cost did.

Since the new lerk system has only been around for about a week, how about you and everyone else give the dev team some time to decide if the new lerk is a good thing or a bad thing. They might change it back. Right now, jetpacks are hyper-useful because they allow marines to be almost anywhere on the map and bypass alien defenses. They can do this with the current fuel system just fine. Giving them unlimited flight would be too much.

Also:

Spit is only effective with two or three gorges all firing down a long hallway from behind cover. Parasite isn't an attack, it's an information gathering tool. Bilebomb only works on unguarded marine structures. Acid rocket only shows up when the marines lost the game already. Spore is limited to a gradual area effect, and usually can be ignored or bypassed. Please don't think you're being clever.

Are you seriously calling those a ranged attack?
Spores are just annoying gas which may or may not kill.
Spit is... well... "Hey, theres fattie over there! Aww, cute its trying to scare us with that. Lets kill it with knife."
Parasite. Yeah, I've actually killed heavy armor with one of those.
Bile bomb. A weapon? I've seen gorgies bile bombing me in heavy armor. Laughed my **** off.
Acid rocket. Well, its hive 3 ability and completely useless when comparing to alternatives.

They do damage dont they?

I wonder if it would be able to code:

Every time the Jetpacker takes melee damage, his jet pack cuts of for a second.

Would make getting that 1st bite in a lot more important, then they drop to the ground for a sec to either die in impact or get munched

Ignore that, just my mind wnadering.

Plz, jets are perfect right now. They're balanced so that someone who knows how to use one to zip around can survive alone in a large room with aliens actively trying to kill him. The way jetpacks are, if you know how to use them, you can lay down a beating, but if you don't, you'll die. That should be the perfect balance.

Frankly, it's the same with lerks now thanks to the zero-energy flight. By simply binding jump to mousewheelup and down and space bar for precise work, the lerk is fast and unpredictable enough to be worth investing 30 res. That's worth 15 skulk upgrades, all at once. But it doesn't matter if you do stupid stuff like try to take on entire squads of marines alone, or even if you mess up and go the wrong direction and get killed for it.

I'm fine with things. Any nerfs or buffs to either should be minor at this point. Jetpacks and lerks are both on about the same level of deadlyness now, if the guy is good and has an appropriate .cfg.

I was flying around with my high tech jet pack, and was like 2-3 onos sizes above and onos and I was like WTH'' he ate me, there is something seriously wrong with devour on an onos when someone is above them.

But I still think Lerks shouldnt have unlimted flight power, gives then to much power, and that gas is deadly, wipes out rines armour in no time, then skulks come in and clean up.

Yet it was clanners who actually whined the most about it.

i wouldnt mind the jp having less fuel or even lowering the refill speed. the fact is almost anyone can stay in the air for 90+% of the time already, which is more than enough.
• MistenTHMistenTH Join Date: 2003-01-01 Member: 11706Members, Constellation, Reinforced - Shadow
40 res for a protolab, 35 res for jetpack research and 15 res apiece for each jetpack is insanely expensive. Given that most jetpackers can die in 3 bites, and are extremely fragile at any rate, it's not worth it in most cases.

If aliens are totally screwed by JPs at that point (i.e. all skulks or at hive1), then they would have been screwed anyway no matter what would have happened.

If aliens are good, then umbra will save the hive. A lerk and 1-2 OCs can be enough to stop 4 coordinated jetters from killing a hive.

are you playing a different game? 1 jp vs 4 lerks (pb3 not 4) can take down a hive.

I got a compromise:
Why not making the jp fuel depending on fps?
Then youre low on fuel in battles and have more fuel as rambo.

The lift got nerfed hardcore which makes you use more fuel so no unlimited fly time. I think the refuel rate should be raised so when you are low and have to land you get more back. I think the jps need some improvement b/c no one gets them anymore. Ontop of them being expensive you have to also medspam to make them effective.

I don't know about you, but I can spend 5 minutes inside a hive jetpacking around if I manage my fuel right. Thats a hell of alot of nades ect.
'
Jetpacks are incredibly powerful tools for marines and I personally am quite good with control and maneuvering around the map. If I had unlimited fuel I would certainly be able to dodge skulks/fades/lerks for quite some time inside a hive since I would never have to land. Not to mention onos would never be able to hit you. Can you imagine just holding the gas down and flying around on top of a flat ceiling? You could never be killed but maybe by a skulk. Since no other aliens can attach to a wall, you can just spam directions and go around so quickly an alien couldn't jump up and hit you

In CO I'd say the JP is overpowered rather then underpowered. I don't consider myself a good player, but with a JP on my back and a shotty in my hands I can just hop around the hiveroom for ages, unloading the occasional shot at the hive and keeping half the alien team busy trying to eat me. Really no need to add unlimited fuel to that and make it even easier.

You'll still take fall damage if you stop jetting high enough. But since it starts recharging right away enough power will recharge to break your fall, preventing damage.

Well in 2.1 I thought it was perfect with the spike i'd snipe marines from far away, and I loved it no but unlimited Jp power would be crazy couldn't think of it. Marines could kill an onos so fast, kill hives with out being touched, and if they had a GL....well that would be nasty.
