It would help if you gave a proper analogy...

not entirely sure what aspect of ns you are talking about

    Yeah, analogies come from comparing things. This is a hypothetical situation. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

I don't play chess, I play NS. If you have a problem about something in NS, speak it plainly to avoid confusion, etc.

Meh run a +3hop script on your queen and she'll pwn.

But remember knights are overpowered as they can run away and heal.

Couldnt believe it dropped 3 castles at spawn the other day and got kicked off the chess board by my own pawns. Rude gits.

The Queen is best with 3 kings, cus it makes her screaming around loud all the time and the whole land screaming with her.

One difference between chess and ns is that both sides of a chessboard have the same units.

I don't think you can actually compare the two together.

Chess is a game where you have unlimited time to think of your moves and strategicly place your pawns. NS is a game where you have 3 minutes max to decide where you want to place your defenses while your "pawns" are getting eaten, gored and mauled half way across the "board".

Chess is a game of melee...in order to engage the enemy you need to touch them. NS is a game where your pawns can kill your queen from down a long corridor.

Chess is a game where you start with all the resources you need to eliminate your opponent, NS is a game where you need to secure the resources first before your opponent does.

Chess has tens of thousands of moves and counters and strategies. NS has just "tens".

Chess is a game where the loser shakes the hand of the winner and walks away knowing he played a good game. NS is a game where you hear "OMG, you guys had all the good players! no one on my team knows how to play! My guys are all losers! I know you must have cheated! This server sucks, I'm leaving!"

You see, these are just a few of the reasons why you cannot compare chess to NS. It's not fair for either game.

I wish I even had "tens" of moves and strats for chess. I've only played it like, 3 times. But what the heck was the original post analogising (spl?) (grmr?) about? Chess queen and - ?

Original poster was making a comparison between script-aided lerk flight and chess. It's just another application of the old scripts arguments.

chess is entirely even for both sides, none have any advantage over the other at the start (except for maybe that white starts, but people would argue that too).... this definatly isn't true of NS

Imo, the rook is somewhat overpowered. I mean, it has too many HPs, and it never runs out of adrenaline. Nerf plz.

I can't really understand where this analogy is going, and if I guessed I would probably get a far off assumption. Anyways,

1.) It is the fault of who cahnged the rules, obviously, but you neither stated WHO changed the rules.

2.) Extra emphasis is added to the queen, but does not take away from the strategy for two reasons:<ul><li>The queen itself is an obstacle, adding to strategy and difficulty</li><li>Once the queen is gone, your game is one regular terms</li></ul>

On the contrary, that is exactly what a COMPARISON IS...

in your case you were contrasting, but contrasting is act of classifying as to the separation of two or more similar things

Comparing is the act of classifying as to the similarity of two or more different things...

Where as he is COMPARING NS to Chess/Checkers for the sake of making his analogy, you were Disproving his comparison, however Chess and NS are similar, as proven in his comparison.

They are also higly contrasting, as you have proved...

    The final statement

You are both wrong, and you are both right, and neither of you is right or wrong..

AAH.... the scientific exactness of Science....

You are right about being right and wrong, but saying they neither right nor wrong?

Who ever said his quote was supposed to compare to ns?

    Re-read the quote guys...

He's saying if you suddenly change the rules a bit and allow for multiple queen moves, does it change the strategy?

I think it complicates things horribly, and makes it very hard to defend. Plus you get the whole "what happens if the queen takes the king in one of its moves?" issue. I think it is a totally different game you're talking about. Part of the strategy of chess is the fact that you only have one move to block or attack or both.

Anyone ever hear of 3d chess? Where you have 4 boards stacked on top of each other? You have rooks which can move down or up in addition to north, south, east, and west. You also have one queen which can move diagonal through the board. Oh man is it complicated. Chess is complex enough as it is I think.

omg! I never expected so many people to have so little to do that they'd actually reply to the thread.

To put the record straight the analogy was not originally about the lerk or scriptors, rate hackers or other cheaters. The debate was about player skill levels and if NS would be a more strategic and fun game if a single player was not able to own the entire enemy team by being singulaly better than them. If in fact it returned to its glory days when a good team could not be beaten by a single good player.

In the analogy the two chess players have equal strategic abilities but one of them has a supremely powerful queen on his side... (this might be a fade or a lerk) the power of the single unit effects the balance of the game too greatly for the game to be suitably balanced.

This I think is an error, a mistake. It pulls the emphesis away from the teamwork and strategic aspects of the game and caters for the top 5% of players rather than the other 95% who play somewhere between competant and shite.

This was part of my argument about why NS should not be aimed at clan play. If it achieves balance and fun in public play then clan play will work - after all, every clan player started as a pub player.

If you aim development of the game at clan players and alienate your average joe then the pub players leave, the clans dont find new blood, public interest in the game dies, so does the support and finally the game is no longer played by anyone.
