Steam Makes Me Sad =(

<div class="IPBDescription">I realy need some dedicated help..</div> I've just installed steam again.. Ive tryed reinstalling it several times. Same results every time. I cannot run regular HL even once on steam. As soon as it renders the 3d of the game (training room) it bombs. If I try to change video settings, mouse settings, spray settings, voice settings, System locks up.
And since you have to run half-life atleast once to get any mods working.. Im stuck. And even if I did install some mod's, how will they run if regular half-life wont even work on steam.
I've been playing hl and mods for years. But now that all my fav mods (NS specificaly) have moved to steam.. I can't play them anymore <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif' /><!--endemo-->. Befor steam i've had no major problems ever. The tech support is appauling.. I've been trying for LITERALY months to get any support from steam/steams forums and I've yet to get a single reply.
Anyways, I hope someone can help. Heres my system specs.
Windows 98 SE (OS)
1.4 ghz amd athlon (processor)
128 RAM (memory)
s3 prosavage 4 DDR (video card)

I tryed playing half-life (this time not training room) I selected easy, to see if maybe it was just the training room bombing.
Anyways, I see the tram, and it plays for about 4 seconds, and the video freezes. I still hear sound- not the voices, just the BG music. I wait awhile, video still frozen. All I see his "half-li" and the frozen video.
Hope this helps.
Also.. Does anyone know how to change video options in steam without the steam menu's? Maybe I can switch to a lower res or different mode manuely without the menu's (menus freeze me)
also makesure you have windows fully updated ussing windows update.
I run it in a window so if a problem arises, it makes it easier to exit.
-update everything
-check that everything is where it belongs (i.e Directories)and if that dosent work
just play around with steam because its such a pain and its uber specific.

to a mod shortcut. That should get it to play hopefully. If that doesnt work, shut steam down, delete the clientregistery.blob file in the steam folder and restart steam. If it doesnt work, when you FIRST installed steam, did you do like so many others and install it, get mad at the rate the updates were coming and remove steam? If so, you need to either reinstall steam to that FIRST directory you installed it to. Or go through your registry and delete everything related to steam. THEN reinsstall steam.
I remember with my old savage card, it would crash windows after exiting a game. No 2k drivers...
My drivers are fully up to date. (besides, half-life without steam works fine) I've done EVERYTHING accept a complete computer format/reinstall.
I've tryed deleting the .blob, clearing all the registry, deleting every file related to steam. Reinstall, same result.
My network is alittle screwy. Both Pc's on the network have internet in full working order, but the network itself doesnt work (we cant access eachothers files or printers etc. even though were both set to do so). I don't see how that could cause the lockups.. but I figured its worth mentioning..
Also, Could it be because I have very little ram? (128mb -not ddr-)
I don't think its my video card. Even though.. this is a very nasty card (its built in garbage.. ewwwww <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo--> ) Half-life worked perfectly fine without steam. (50-60 fps on regular HL) Maybe If I changed OS.. I hear Windows 98 SE is evil for some reason.. lol
Unfortunatly.. Even in windowed mode, when it freezes, it still locks the entire PC up. Can't ctrl+alt+delete or anything.
