I'm pretty good at using AutoCAD to make 3d models. Does anyone have something that I could use to hone my skills. I'm looking for something decently simple right now. Thinking along the lines of a simple rifle, mine, or hand grenade. I'm really just looking to get into making these models. And yes I do use AutoCAD, what does everyone else use to make the models themselves.

I use 3dsMax 6, got it through a university for $20. They have site licenses for their computers and for staff to use at home. My dad's on staff, so all you pay for are the discs and the license, which is dirt cheap when a unversity buys several thousand. But if you can't get Max, go with Milkshape. I prefer Max, especially since you can get the Brazil Renderer, which makes spectacular renders. Oh, and I prefer the interface too. But if you've never used Max, you won't be spoiled by it, and Milkshape shouldn't be too bad. It's shareware, $20 or something to buy.

Milkshape is a great starting point, even if your course gives you access to fancier packages at lower prices than usual. Its interface is ridiculously simple to use, for a beginner it delivers great results, and comes with a free 30-day trial ($25 to register after that).

There's Brazil Rio, which is free but only does 512x384 renders (max size). And no support. But aside from that, its the same as far as I can tell.

The stickies never hurt to be read either

autocad is fine for modelling and might be best for you, but do you have Autodesk? If so you'd want to get yourself a copy of Milkshape and use both, because Milky can import autodesk and autodesk is a bit easier than autocad (ive used both). Then you can use milkshape to actually compile your model. If you dont have autodesk and cad cant export as an autodesk file or whatnot, you might want to learn milkshape for it's a great tool for it's price and even with using 3dsm some use milkshape to import/export/compile their models. It's worth the $25.
