<div class="IPBDescription">Landing gear.</div> Right, I'm in a bit of a bother. I'm modelling a ship, and it's come to the time when all previous ship models have failed me. I am really stuck for ideas on the landing gear, so I ask for the NS communities help.

The landing gear is gonna have to support probably 3-4 tonnes per strut, and the two I'm stuck with are two at the rear end of the ship (the front strut is also the loading ramp for the cargo hold).

Any images you might have links to would be greatly appreciated, since I really am stuck.

Just an update, this is what I have so far, to give an overall feel for it.

And now you most likely see my problem, those rear feet are hideous. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->

This would look cool on an inacessible landing pad near a marine start <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->

The eventual intention is as a map model. It can be used as a marine start even (if mappers can place stuff inside a model, I don't know), since the cargo bay is about half the height of the whole ship, and extends from front to rear.

It is quite poly intensive right now (1,300 or so), which will be thinned out later on. Also considering replacing the missile launchers (the large pods between the engines), and replacing them with small wing type structures, or maybe turrets or something.

And, if someone points out the lack of vertical thrusters, there are two on the bottom panel of each of the lower engines.

i dont know if it would work as a map model unless theres sumthin u can do to mimic the look of models in hammer or whatever... unless it was used outside or something for scenery, because people can change these models, and if it was marine start you could make it look like... a little unnoticable dot, or just get rid of it so u can see the start, hax... i would just go into hammer and make a prefab... then again i dont know much about mapping or modeling.. whatever

    oh btw it looks cool

It's been a long time since I played with WC, but I believe you can import some common format mesh into it to make part of your bsp, so the model could be a useable 'rine start...

Hmm. Well, I've changed the plan with this one for now. I'm gonna just put a pair of faces at the top of the ramp, and get a door type tecture or something put on it (the ramp wouldn't be compressed whilst in space, so the cargo bay would need a door), so marines can't get inside.

Maybe I'll make another version with an open cargo bay, eats up the polies though.

    [Edit]
    Little update:
    <img src='http://e.1asphost.com/arson/pics/arbitrator2.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image' />

New undercarriage skids in place (not yet hooked up to the rest of the ship yet), new cargo bay ramp, shortened stern, and some poly saving other bits.

    Comments?

Also, can a mod change the topic title please, to something like "TSA Arbitrator", since this has gone a little off topic. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

None of the pictures posted are working for me, but it's probably this stupid computer at the lab.

In the meantime, one thing you may want to do is check out the landing gears on the heavy bombers or transport aircraft. The B-36, for instance, was a big beast. It's landing gear had to support 205 <i>tons</i>. Aluminum overcast indeed!

    <a href='http://www.air-and-space.com/ficon/handbook%20GRB-36D-III%2077%20l.jpg' target='_blank'>http://www.air-and-space.com/ficon/handboo...II%2077%20l.jpg</a>

    <a href='http://www.hill.af.mil/museum/photos/dawnjet/b-36.htm' target='_blank'>http://www.hill.af.mil/museum/photos/dawnjet/b-36.htm</a>

In the model, the 4 wheels can easily be replaced by two skids (one on either side of the big piston thingie) if you want.

Not sure if it suits your idea, especially since I can't see the pictures (as mentioned) but it's a thought anyway.

Hmm, seems my webhost has died <b>AGAIN!</b>.

    Damn upgrades, lol.

Anyway, here's an attached image of what I've come up with for the undercarriage right now, I think it looks ok, much better than the old stuff, opinions?

    And, finally, the TSA Arbitrator, in sm <!--emo&:0--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wow.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wow.gif' /><!--endemo--> <!--emo&:0--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wow.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wow.gif' /><!--endemo--> thvision.

Please ignore the bad image quality (thanks, jpeg compression!), and the large image size.

Nice model, would work great somewhere like the Hera landing pad. And if there's only 1 or 2 max on the map, 1300 polies isn't that bad for most people. The default NS v_models are most (if not all) over 1300, as are the players. If it was 3K+, that could be a problem.

how about make the top and bottom not so symmetrical with each other.

What could I put up there though, that isn't gonna bounce the pollies up too high?

I thoght about maybe weapon systems and stuff, but they'd be underneath or on the sides imho.

Here's some random MS-painted ideas... I'm thinking gun turret instead of radar on top, but i was too lazy to erase the radar.

Edit: pardon the quality, but MS paint and red colors do not make good jpegs. The label in the bottom right is "Torpedo launcher or something" and bottom left is "search lights?"

nononono i don't mean add extra stuff on. i mean move some of the vertices around to make the top and bottom different.
  • DreamScarDreamScar Join Date: 2004-04-17 Member: 27982Members
yeah, something, cause it looks too x-wing'ish right now.

i quite like the ideas that dorian suggested, wouldnt add that many polys if the poles were 4 sides each, add a gun turret on top, i think the search lights could be skinned in.
