Unusual Problem.....

<If this is in the wrong section please move>

I have just recently formatted and done a fresh install.....
Updated all my drivers as you do, im using the latest ATi Catalyst Drivers for my Radeon 9600 Pro and my FPS in cs and ns are both a solid 100.

Heres the problem......In cs my gamma is fine and it looks as it should. When i join NS its really bright as tho my gammas right up.
Ive never had any problems with installing natural-selection or past installs so im kinda confused.

I checked what exe's i had to install from the downloads section and ive installed the 158mb and 25mb patch's but its still incredibly bright.

Originally i was using Powerstrip but ive removed this incase its causing a conflict, ive made sure it has the right clearance with my firewall to work yet i still cant adjust the gamma. Using the ingame menu i cant adjust the gamma or brightness, it seems to force it to about 4 notches from the beginning.

Someone help me please?

Its bugging the hell outta me as u can all imagine

Can we have your system specs please? It might help if we knew your OS, mobo, CPU, (you put your vid card - that's a step in the right direction) etc.

DX9 coud be your problem right there; try running the game in OpenGL mode.
  • spawnyspawny Join Date: 2004-02-12 Member: 26448Members, Constellation
    Already running in OpenGL.
Ive been using Half-Life since it came out so im fairly clued up on what to set it up correctly and what to diasble etc.
I,ll crack it eventually,if u have ne more ideas tho, they would be gratefully appreciated..

It might be just me... but I find that the NS maps have much higher gamma than other maps. That could be it...

I'm running an NVidia GeForce 2 mx400 and I get the same thing.

Don't worry about it, NS just needs really bright gamma.

I actually get really high gamma in NS and in CS, with no way to adjust it. I have long since given up on how to deal with it. I have a Trident video card. It is pretty low quality, limiting me to about 20 fps. The good news is that I don't notice high ping until it gets above 500. Since I have a laptop I can't really change the video card.

Anyway, in response to your problem, I would say don't worry about it unless it really bugs you. Otherwise you could just change the brightness settings for your monitor while playing, then change them back after you are done.

You could try getting the Omega drivers for your card. I've got the exact same cards and those drivers made quite a difference. The site is http://www.omegacorner.com/

Actually, I've found that the only reliable drivers for a card are the drivers released by the company (in your case, the Catalyst drivers that you're using).

See what happens if you use the console command to fiddle with the gamma number. I think it's just "gamma," but I can't be sure.

Anyway, there are a few .exe's in your NS folder for you to check out. First, there's reset_gamma.exe in your NS (or NSP for 3.0b) folder to reset your gamma to normal (I used to do that, I would enter the game, alt-tab, and run reset_gamma).

If you have a 2.0 or 1.04 installs, there's another program (gammatweak.exe? Somebody else might know the name) that will help you set your gamma correctly by running some sight-tests.

    powerstrip works...... works good too

you can increase or decrease gamma on the fly.....

and no.... i dont turn it up to the point where i see cloaked things heh....

weird how 9600 pro is too bright and my 9800 pro is too dark... even with h-l settings all maxed

BigMadSteve, i,ll give these Omega drivers a go, whats the worst that can happen eh?

To me personally its a major problem. I love the look of how my NS has always been and playing it with a gamma of about 40 isnt the way i want to play for good. It spoils the mod i love so much tbh :/

EZero powerstrip has always been good for me, ive used it for about 3 years. But it doesnt work under NS anyway only CS.
I used to have another program that stripped the dark spots out of games....cant recall the apps name but i could really do with it right now!

I tried setting the shortcuts for increase/decrease gamma up in my ATi panel and still seemed to be diasbled even tho i had turned it all on.
If i install my ATi drivers before dx9, that wouldnt cause a conflict perhaps? Ive always installed dx first but this time i got lost on what i had installed.

    Problem solved!
I installed the Omega drivers but for some reason they didnt appear to install correctly. They un-installed my monitor, so i either installed the wrong Omega version drivers or i went wrong on the setup somewhere.

So i removed it and strated again this time with the ATi Catalyst drivers i had originally tried. It seems to have corrected it....my ns is back to its normal colour and working better than ever.

Thanks for all your help people

It said at the start of the setup to de-install the ATi desktop manager. Did you do that?

At least your problem is solved anyway
