help
Hey,
I have been playing CS for bout almost 2 years now i think? atleast it seems that way... and i also played DoD for a few months, and played in CAL for both... but now i am recently moving on to Natural Selection, i would like to go CAL in NS also but i am what you would call a NOOB! I have played NS for a few days now and am still a bit confused on strats etc. if you could post where i could find any of the following i would be mst greatful: (mind you this is for all ns_ maps, cal does not do combat and frankly, combat is easy as hell)

- Maps for some of the ns_ maps (CAL pref.)
- Some of the basic common used keys.
- maybe some CAL legal tweaks
- basic strats etc. (ive read most on these forums)
- anything helpful

Where to begin, where to begin.

NS is obviously a cool game, but it has a definate learning curve too. If you've played halflife mods in the past, it'll be easier. I would love to help you because you asked very nicely, however there is a huge mass of information about NS. So much so that we need a manual for the game. I think someone recently wrote a HUUUUGE updated NS manual for 3.0 which would be exactly what you need, but I never bookmarked it, and can't seem to find it. :/ Also, if you manage to join up with a clan or play some pugs, your team will probably explain some things.

It sounds like all you really need to know is the ins and outs of NS_ mode, but you weren't too specific about what you know so far. Like you know that you can only get one kind of upgrade and only drop one kind of alien structure for every hive you have, so you need more hives to get more upgrades. Or maybe you didn't notice that, I just don't know enough to start randomly spouting information.

I'm sure the link to the manual will pop up in this thread given enough time.

The number one strategic skill to have for NS is knowing how to spend resources without wasting them on stuff that sucks, or that you don't need. Kind of like buying the right gun for the job or the map in CS.

The best thing is probably to join a game and ask for help. Hopefully youll meet a clanner who can tell you some of the stuff. Signing up for http://www.ampednews.com could be a good idea as alot of the clans seem to use the forum there not to mention post demos.

All I can advise you on is play more. You're obviously going to be confused at first, but as you play more, you'll see different strategies used in the game and then you can incorporate them into your game. Looking for strategies is good, but first hand experience is always better.

No one gave him a cookie, and I am fresh out....

Check sigs for servers, most of them are cool enough to play on and the players will help you out. Read the manual, it helps a lot. For the first few days don't go gorge or jump in the command chair unless you let them know you are new to the game.

Ask questions in game, and be nice...

Oh and I just found a cookie, but I ate it already!

My advise to you is stick with ONE team. Do not go aliens then rines then aliens, if you choose aliens stick with one evolution(skulk or lerk ect.) and practice like crazy with it. If you would like to be marines then do the same thing. I bet your good as rines since so much FPS experience but I prefer aliens.

As a precaution, do NOT take the attitude toward combat that you have any further. Combat a competitive level allows for raw class-oriented strategies to evolve, and is a hugely different mode than NS. Combat does reach a certain plateau as far as tactics are involved, and this is where NS maps come in.

My suggestion is to spend a day or two in a good server's map rotation (I'm thinking that you might want to go to OSS or some other server if you are confident with your raw skill - aim that is), and then head onto IRC and go to #findnsclan, #trainns, and #nspug. Try to find a clan, or find a pug. Pug is preferable.

This is of course assuming that you have an overhead of each map printed/memorized and you are familiar with each level. Hope you're a quick learner, did this program to power-familiarize a friend and he's quite decent now. Perhaps you will fare better/worse.

The manual is tucked away in an impossible-to-find area when you are looking for it. Here is the link to it. Honestly, one of the hardest parts of the game is learning your way around maps. A good way to do this is to play on a marine team with a good commander. Let him know you are new, and ask him to place waypoints wherever he wants you to go. You will probably end up going to the same places repeatedly, and you will have a nice blue circle to tell you where you are going, so you will learn your way there. Hope this is helpful.

#nspug is the best way to get some basic scrim experience and get the feel for competive play. UGL has a co league, but noone takes co to oseriously anyway. ampednews.com has map overviews for all ns_maps atm. see you there

-Looking for servers of my land/language (Holland in my case)
-Trying to mimic other players, and see how it would work out.
    -Asking a question sometimes
    -Watch demo's
    -Post question's @ this forum
