Free, 1GB storage... April Fool'd?
http://gmail.google.com/

Sounds suspicious, but you never know Google has always provided great services for free. But you have to admit 1GB per person seems a bit much

In comparison btw, hotmail gives 1 Meg (if I'm not mistaken) the average ISP gives either 20 or 50 megs per box (with usually up to at least 4 boxes, 1 per family member in an average family) and the largest FREE webmail I know gives 50 megs per box (netcourrier, a french mail service)

(edit: all above is referring to "free" excluding ISP costs)

I heard about the Google mail on Radio2 business news, but nothing was mentioned about the 1gb limit. Only one half true, maybe?

I just cant buy the 1 GB storage bit. Do you realize, that is enough room to install windows 98, halflife, and natural selection? You can have a fully functional version of NS, happening right in your mailbox.
  • RuByRuBy Join Date: 2002-12-12 Member: 10732Members
looking at the terms of use and all that stuff it seems very believable and you have to admit storage is becoming very cheap, especially for a corporation like google which already stores a huge amount of information.

This would be the perfect "revenge' on Microsoft's interest in Google's search engine system. Hotmail is an extremely popular email hosting option (if not the most popular). If Google can take that market niche away... watch out.

I bet they pay for it with arseloads of junk mail. You'll probably get 500 Megs of spam a day

yeah there definitely will be ads of the kind you see when you search google (links to websites in relation to keywords in the email...)

Sure they say there will be little spam. So did my hotmail account. But let's see what I've gotten in the last ~15 hours since I cleaned out my mail:

They have announced conclusively that it is not an april fools joke. They can provide a gigabyte of storage at a cost to them of $2 per gig.
  • Umbraed_MonkeyUmbraed_Monkey Join Date: 2002-11-25 Member: 9922Members
Actually, the cost/gig is even better than that. If I can get a 120hd for 118CAN (OMG!), then google could probably find a better deal. Especially since they would buy en mass. I still find it shocking how much space they are giving to us though.

The official press release for this went out YESTERDAY, so its not an april fool's joke.

I haven't read up, but I bet the 1GB of storage is simply for e-mail only, NOT something you can just upload files to (and share with others).

During this testing period, the Gmail interface is only available in English. However, we're committed to making Gmail available to as many people in as many languages as possible. And Gmail accounts can already be used to read and send email in most languages (even Klingon).

I'm surprised nobody's calling bloody murder over this. When Microsoft pushed out Netscape's *cost* browser with a *free* browser that they used their *market share* to push, everyone cried like little girls. Now that Google is doing the same thing, using their *huge* following from searching to push an email service, no one brings it up.

    No <3 for microsoft.

    yet

yes, but the difference is that MSoft pakaged the 'free' browser with their OS.

GMail is something you have to go and get.

They are not taking customers from anyone. No one pays for Email (and if they do, they should be hit with a wet trout). All ISPs provide free email. And if you don't like that email, then you go get free email ANYWHERE else.

And as for if this is real?

I would love it to be (though I doubt it)

However, I would still probably stick with my email addy simply b/c it is secure (ssh owns me)
