Is friendly fire on by default and if it is can it be turned off by the server?

You can start a server in either Casual (default) or Tournament mode. In casual mode there is no FF, except for hurting yourself. In Tournament mode, though, FF is on, and I believe you can set off your own tripmines, and it takes resources to respawn. You'll want to run your clanmatches in Tournament mode.

oh no. NS has options like that? i just know the servers are gonna put it on the wrong settings then.

My, your mister negative all over the place. Try posting positive for once. It'll give you a warm feeling

FF servers for ANY mod are pretty scarce, and they are usually clan servers. Besides, you don't like tournament mode? Go to another server. Or, as I belive was suggested to you before, go to another mod.

i don't like casual mode.

You don't like anything, so that doesn't say much. But you'll dislike Casual mode the least.

How can you know you don't like casual mode. You haven't even played the game yet.

not to mention I'm pretty sure you have trouble keeping to your word when a skulk leaps in among your fire team. Or you fire a bile bomb and ravage a few friendlies...

in casual mode, it doesn't cost you or your team anything if you die?
• CMEastCMEast Join Date: 2002-05-19 Member: 632Members
It would be bad if it cost the team in public mode. People might be playing for the first time ever, how can you expect them to stay alive?
I think the casual/tournament idea is brilliant. Most people have to create tournament versions of games or the tournament versions of the game are rubbish/not used.

99% of playtesting has been done to balance the Casual playmode, and this is what is being released. I'm not sure of Flayra's plans, but I have a feeling Tournament Mode will require more testing and balancing to make sure it works.

Trust me: casual mode is a TON of fun.

It costs however much your weapons/upgrades/evolutions cost to give you when you die. A Heavy armor, GL toting, welder packing marine can cost over 50 resources if no one's around to pick up his weapons.

ViPr, if you don't like casual mode, then it's pretty obvious you like tourny.

Tourny or casual? That kind of sucks, What if you wan't friendly fire but not a cost for respawning? can you manually get something in between?
• ViPrViPr Resident naysayer Join Date: 2002-10-17 Member: 1515Members
if it costs nothing if you die then when people need repairs and resupply, instead of running back to base they should just type kill in the console or kill themselves some other way, coz that will be faster and i assume they get full health, armor, and a weapon with full ammo when they respawn so that's cheaper than reloading or repairing so they'd be doing the team a favour if they killed themselves. imagine someone comes stumbling into base with 1 health after miraculously surviving a massacre and being persued by enemy units, instead of being praised as a hero, everyone will be saying "oh you idiot! why didn't you just kill yourself!"
• DarknessDarkness Join Date: 2002-05-05 Member: 583Members
humm i believe EVERYTHIng other than standard equipment will cost dosh, so killing your slef will spoilt resources if you got other than the basics, so if you plan on running around with no upgrades so that you dont loose resourcepoints killing yoruself then i wont stop you coz im an alien and i like fast food

BTW do commander still give out the weapons or do the marines fetch them at the diff. buildings?

Killing yourself costs time, this can be an important factor for the slow moving marines. There is a built in delay between death and respawn plus a queue of dead marines waiting to use the (usually) single infantry portal. Plus of course it can take you over a minute to get from your spawn point to the firefight, which is a long time in firefight terms.
When resources are low, i'm badly wounded and haven't got any special gear I have been known to kill myself rather than consume valuable med-kits.

Darkness:
The commander is the sole distrubutor of marine weapons and health. Ammo can be picked up at the armory (if the commander has placed one). Weapons can only be place by the commander within a fixed distance of the armory.

exactly the kind of thing that must be avoided by designing the game thoughtfully. this is why the casual mode is rubbish. the game should be designed in such a way that players are praised for making harrowing escapes and rescuing stricken comrades; not insulted.

Wait a minute........are you insulting NS' gameplay???Is this possible....Well, first off, if a marine gets killed during a firefight and he is loaded up to the teeth with armour and weapons, of course it is gonna cost some RPs.In that manner, I believe, is where the most RPs are lost during a game, trying to respawn dead players.(I might be wrong, so PTs correct me if I am.) So, if they take that element out of the game, you can build up any structure you want, whenever you want, dump off GL,HMG and shotfuns all day, and still have RPs in the bank.(Maybe a little exagerated.)

ViPr, you confuse me. Whether you're a pessimist, a critic, or just a flamebait, I can't decide. But whatever it is, a lot of us are getting tired of it. I trust that you mean good, but as someone said earlier, you need to learn when to cut your losses. You don't know how casual mode will turn out, because you haven't even touched the game yet, whereas 100 something playtesters have. The fact that casual mode is still in says something.

Just calm down and wait for the release, ok?
