Co_maps Leveling Up Solution

Hey guys, im sure you have all experience this scenario. You get on NS and are in the mood for some Combat maps. You join a server to see that nearly everyone is already level 10 except for you. Next thing that usually happens is that either A) you go marines only to find yourself face to face with a Onos and a lvl0 weapon= screwed. B) you go aliens only to get mowed down by the lvl3 shottys and hmgs and heavies or jp. And this results in ending the map with a score of 1 kill and 30+deaths(not always, but often) This wouldnt be so bad if the game ended sooner than not. But a lot of times it will take a while to restart the map, which in my case when that time comes i have to leave for work or go do something else. Now im not here just to complain about it, im here to send forth a suggestion and wondering what everyones feedback is on it. Im sorry if this has been suggested before, but i searched the forums and couldnt find a previous postin on this. So here, why not. When someone joins say....10 minutes into the game, take the average of everyones level on your team and then place you 1 or 2 levels below that, so you get some instant points for that desperatly needed armor when you join against focus aliens. example there are 5 marines on your team for simplicities sake say they are all level 6. so the average of that is a level 6 marine. and just so you dont became as power but powerful enough to stay alive give the new joiners a level of 4 or 5, or 3. I think ive said enough, getting too long of a post.

Yeah, I always thought something like that should be implemented.

One could complain if the lower portion of the avg kept joining the avg would keep raising. How about the newcomer just gets the same exp as the guy with he lowest exp?

One could complain that one guy is griefing he could stay at 0 exp and keep joiners at 0 exp. How about exclude anyone with exp below a certain amount of the avg exp from affecting said method?

What about people F4ing and then rejoining?

Yep join a game late and your done.

Also aliens get plenty more upgrades - which doesnt help them much in ns_ if they get too used to it. Takes alot more ability to pull stuff off in ns_

I was under the impression that the higher-level a person you kill, the more XP you got, but you need more XP for each level increase, so the average time between levels remains roughly constant.

Having played more, I'm not so sure that that is exactly how it works.

But if it did work like that, then late joiners would be able to climb the ranks faster - there would be more high-level players around, each worth more XP than a starting marine, so that would (partially) compensate for the players being harder to kill.

In reverse, it would make it harder for 1 player to pull too far ahead - if one player were to get to level 8 while everyone else was at level 4, then he'd have to get a lot of kills to get to level 9 - more than the level 4s would to get to level 4.

Experience system here wroks like in Diablo (v1.1) where the bigger the monster (this case, the higher the level) you get more exp for it. But exp is shared among all the players that were in the radius of the fallen monster (umm.. player) so unless your killed by yourself level10 onos with lvl0 lmg, you only gain exp from what remains from other people kills.

Btw you were correct about more exp is required to level up each level, see the chart in the ns 3 manual on this site.

I can join a game when everyone is level 10 and still come out with a 1:1 score. The trick is to **** the other aliens xp at first. Dont charge a HA when you are level 0. Follow behind an onos or fade to get the badly needed xp to start off with. After a couple of levels then do your own thing.

There is always a spot or two on each map for a skulk to sit and leech exp. If you are way outclassed by lvl 7 marines you can hide there and leech through the wall without getting killed (except stupid GL shockwaves...grrr!) The higher level guys shoudn't care...you will be helping them out soon enough.

Yea, I see the problem now. nvm

Several precautions would have to be implemented to prevent a person from reseting their upgrades by rejoining and gaining exp instantly. Seems like too much, but hey, if devs are up for it, it'd be a nice feature. Leeching exp is simply not as fun.

not always, depends on how your playing, if your playing your role, i find it harder to get a kill, but still done non the less

(then again i havn't pubed in awhile, this is from when i did)

Can't say I support this feature. All we have to do is make Combat short like it's supposed to be and the slippery slope won't be a problem.

I like this idea. Not only will it make it easy to join late game, but it'll make switching teams less brutal on the volunteer. Usually when teams become very imbalanced, nobody wants to give up their levels to switch sides. I think this system would work well with some tweaking...Maybe a cap of level 4 or something.

Couldn't you simply retry, and rechoose all your upgrades?

Sounds flawed.

I really don't see the problem. I play combat all the time, joining in at all points in games. And I don't have any trouble doing well.

Maybe you're not playing properly for a level 1 guy in a level 10 game? You have to play a slightly more reserved game, sticking behind people, defending the CC, things like this.

At worst, you're a skulk in a game with heavies and jetpackers and grenades; in which case you stick to walls near the fight and level up from teammate kills that way.

I've played a LOT of combat games, and never understood the complaints about this.

the whole PROBLEM with that is that its BOOOOOORING when everyone is lvl 10 and you are lvl 0 you just stick in the back and cant do **** for 3-5 lvls
A game should be FUN not boring and thats why it needs some change to this.

DO you understand now?!

Good lord.
How do people survive with that short an attention span?
The time it takes to reach level 4 when most of the group around you is level 10 is nothing. Just stay alive by hiding behind your team-mates for a moment and you can be in with the rest of them asap.
• OtsOts Join Date: 2003-07-30 Member: 18577Members, Constellation
Umm, this is hardly a problem.. All you have to do when you join a "late" game is stay behind other players and level up. If their all 10lvl their bound to kill someone and share some experience to you. It really isnt that big of a deal..

I see what you're saying, but I've not experienced it... I can't think of a time when joining a game late has bothered me.

Just change the way you play to account for your low level, and get on with it.

hey guys sorry took so long to respond on my own thread, thing is ive been on spring break. so i just got back, hey good feedback guys. yeah i know its flawed, but it was just a thought which i think with tweaking could possibly help move things along. and true you get exp if you kill higher level enemies at lower levels...but honestly how often do you kill a lvl 10 onos with a lvl0 lmg. either way. thanks for the opinions guys.
