well when 3.0 comes out, its going to have the full steam support, under the "my games list". does this mean when you install it, it will appear there or will appear as an uninstalled icon on everyones steam games menu.

I think they meant that you can maintain NS through Steam like CS or DoD -

but the current build creates errors over errors, because, i think, the code of NS3.03b is someway incombatible with the latest engine upgrade.

3.0 aint out, we have a beata (just remember that)

and If the I understand it all corectly (and I think I do) then it will be an offical Steam game (aka, it will be under the games list, even if you don't have it installed), AND it will get auto updates via steam <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->

I've heard rumors that Valve is going to be vastly extending Steam's auto-update capabilities, meaning that mods like NS and Sven Coop may not find themselves "privileged" to be the first on Steam, but instead will be two of many.

Eric Smith sent the following email out to the hlcoders mail list today -

We'd like to begin collecting builds from Mod teams interested in distributing their Mod on Steam.

Players will be able to click on the icon for your Mod in the Games list to install your Mod and then get all of the files they need. This means they won't need to visit a web site to download the content and install it manually. We will be able to release new versions of your Mod on Steam so everyone will automatically get the updates.

Dedicated servers will also be able to get the content for your Mod.

We should be ready to start distributing Mods on Steam in the next few weeks. In the meantime, if you'd like to have your team's Mod included, please put together a complete build of what you'd like to release (.zip or .exe) and send me an e-mail with a link to the file so I can download it and get things ready on our end. Make sure the build you give us has been tested with Steam.

Please also include contact information for a Mod team member for us to communicate with if we have any questions/problems.

Let me know if you have any questions.

    Eric Smith
    Valve

So... there... email Eric. Be sure to wish him a belated happy birthday too. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo--><!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

I think that steam is very helpfull and supportive of NS so what it doesn't get a little icon by its name in your list and goes under the "third party games" no biggy I think steam is doing a great job of managing all the HL mods out there and thats quite the job seeing how many there are.

Steam will be good for mods to be distributed in this way....

Hmm.. may not be directly connected to here, but does anyone knows if NS is going to be cached in later release like cs and dod are?
If so, does it mean that bots and/or server mods won't be possible? Not to mention custom skins?

I hope it will be in a .gcf format like DoD, CS and HL are, it gives me a back-up incase I choose some bad skins/sounds which brings me onto your second point about bots, server mods and custom skins. AFAIK, all of these are possible if NS is locked up in a .gcf. If you put any custom content in the right place Steam would automatically use that over and above the default content it has but if you decide to delete your custom content NS would not be lost without some of it's files, they're in the cached .gcf file.

And I've seen plenty of bots and server mods for DoD, which is cached up.

I was going to post this <a href='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=67063&st=15' target='_blank'>here</a>, but Dela locked it while I was writing my post, then directed me here. The post is a bit off, but I don't feel like re-writing the whole thing; I am hungry, and the kitchen beckons.

<!--QuoteBegin--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->Why is it that everyone has to label new players as "CS'ers?"  This is not unique to NS, either - every other game or game mod I play tell new players to "Go back to CS!"  It's absurd.

I play Counter-Strike fairly regularly.  It's a flawed game; it lacks attractive graphics, good physics, and features infrequently updated and generally underdeveloped gameplay.  However, damn near everyone I know at the local LAN center plays it.  When playing a game of this type in a small, friendly environment, we generally see past the issues and just have fun.  We don't whine about n00bs, **** about the AWP (or AW/M for the nit-picky), or accuse players of hacking.  We just play.

Now, I'm not going to tell everyone to go out and play CS; NS is quite clearly a superior game, and given the attitudes that most of you seem to have, telling you to do so would most likely get me shot.  However, I would ask that you stop railing on CS all the time and stop pointing to it as the cause of all your woe.

Additionally, you should stop having such a negative attitude towards waves of new players coming to your favorite game.  If you appreciate the community and the game, you should feel happy that the game is becoming more popular.  As was said before, new players mean more prospective constellation members, and means more fan work done with custom models and the like.  Grow up and open your mind.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

    /me reaches for the shotgun.

The REASON why CSNub is often used is b/c it is the largest Online game, and thus has the largest persentage for smacktards.

it is fairly comen to play a game and get either:
    1) suggestions that would basicaly turn it into a CS clone
    or
    2) say **** this I am gona go back to CS.

Rarely do people say that with other mods/games substituted for CS.

Personaly, I do use CSNub as a term, however it dosn't aply to everyone (or even most people) who play CS (and I tend to make that clear when I say it)

I just reserv it for thost fools who bought CS:R and then come into a game of another mod and start bitching and being abusive <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->

For one thing, let it be known that I play NS and CS, and both require the same amount of teamwork.

Let's read that again, now that your suprise-induced siezure is over. Yes, they require the same amount of communication and teamwork.

"Aliens, holoroom. Get that fatty before anything happens"
    "Roger that. Commander?"
"Dropping TF once everything is secure."
"You build, I'll cover. Get backup in here."

"Terrorists at bombsite B, don't see the bomb"
    "I'll flank them, hang tight"
    "Bomb's at A!"
"Roger that, going to wrap it up at B and get over there"

If an NS game sounds like that first conversation on the marine side, the aliens don't have a chance unless they're coordinated and on their way to holoroom.

If a CS game sounds like that second conversation on the Counter-terrorist side, the Terrorists don't have a chance unless they're acting together.

Simply put, if one side utilizes more teamwork than the other side in either mod, a slaughter is in order. I've found a few good holes in the web where there are good clan sites, both in CS and NS. The way that the CS "community" works, there really is no CS "community". It's really just a big horde with lost of smaller communities, where you may find a great server loaded with teamwork. NS is a smaller game, so we're one big, happy family over here with plenty of teamplay.

    Cheers!

Unfortunately as repulsive as some of these people may actually be, it isn't exactly our place to decide who gets to stay and who doesn't. If you considered "CSNub"s to be a quasi-race in the social realm of online games then being outspoken against them and their ways is a form of racism. Now I know that's a pretty far stretch of the imagination, but I hope you get my meaning. If I was to say what kind of people I wanted living in my country and being a part of my real-life community let alone my world-wide community I would imagine that most of you would be sitting on a space barge heading towards nowhere with the rest of the 99.9% of the world population that I could really care less about.

Instead just learn to cope with the situation and learn to deal with them being in existence. There really isn't any other civilized thing we CAN do.

Now... back to the original topic that has been so blatantly hijacked...

That's the other thing - not nearly as many people as you think cheat, CS players or otherwise. The vast majority are simply better than you. This is a lot like life - you may be the best at whatever school you go to and get into a nice college, but as soon as you go there, you're in the middle of the class or lower. You will not always win, you will not always ownz0r, and you will very frequently see people do things you didn't know could be done.

When cs players start playing ns. Ns will transform the "noob" into a ns noob (meaning new to ns and ready to learn and play). well that happened to a few people I know. So lets stick together and teach things about ns and let it grow bigger and popular.

Playing marines kinda obligate the team to play together, or else they lose (in normal sized games of course). Hopefully, this will have a wave effect on the player base coming in from CS and spread back over that mod.

Or maybe i'm just a dreamer....
