What Am I Not Getting ? (installation Problems)

Dear all,

Okay. I've downloaded v. 3.0 and followed the directions to the best of my abilities. I fired up Steam, played a little HL (original), quit, installed NS 3.0 to my /steam_account_name/half-life/ns directory, to no avail. I also installed it to a /steam_account_name/ns directory as well with no success.

By "success", i mean when i fire Steam up after installation, there is no "Natural Selection" anywhere... not under Games, not under 3rd party games (though my HL2 add on, Substance, shows up fine).

Am i missing something?

My gratitude in advance.

Yeah... see, that's exactly what i've done about 5 times now. It's still not working. But thanks all the same.

See this happens, when you do not read it with given care <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

You said that you installed into "my /steam_account_name/half-life/ns" directory

My guide told you to install into "C:\steam\steamapps\steam_id\half-life"

Do as i tell you or you will fail (big scary voice) <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Ahhh... to be honest, i've tried many variations.

I did point the installer to C:\steam\steamapps\steam_id\half-life , as instructed.

The only thing i can think that i'm doing wrong is not saving a game within HL , when i load up the training room.

Anyway, i'm gonna call it a day and deal with it tomorrow. Thanks for the instructions though- at least i know i'm doing it right.

    Thanks again.

Mind you C:\steam\steamapps\steam_id\half-life is only correct, if you installed steam directly onto drice c and if you steam_id is actually called steam_id.

It could be aswell: E:\Program Files\steam\steamapps\bloodcrow\half-life

the important thing is that you need to install NS into the "half-life" directory which is located in the directroy related to your steam_id.

Right. And i've been doing that. I just didn't want to share with the world my Steam account name- not that it really matters much, but it's an e-mail address and i've got enough spam in it to deal with already.

But to make it clear, yes, i've been installing NS into my half-life directory, NOT half-life 2. I'll give it another run here shortly to see if there are any changes.

    details to come...

    Woo Hoo !

I didn't do anything differently in terms of the install path. What i DID do was delete a 2nd account i had on steam that a friend of mine put on there by accident. I also nuked an external NS directory that i had created during one of my extensive attempts to install NS.

Now... to relive my X-Com glory days vicariously via Natural Selection.

I have followed these instructions and I'm having the same problem. I have the original release of Half-Life.

I'm having the same problem as everyone else. When you start the training level do you have to finish it or just quit when it starts? <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    I'm having a similar problem.

I installed steam, downloaded hl2 through steam and then went to install ns. I can't install the hl1 (which is not source) because steam says I've already registered hl2 and cannot download any additional games without paying. In addition to that hl1 (not source) is not even on my list in steam.

I've installed ns to a few directories:

    userid/half-life
    userid/half-life 2
    userid/half-life 2/hl2
    steamapps/sourcemods

Steam still refuses to acknowledge ns.

I think I might try reinstalling the whole 5 long cd's and just installing ns from the start, which is what worked for me before. I wish I didn't have to do it though.

    Archfiend:

Well, first, remember that Natural Selection is a mod for the orginal, non-source version of Half-Life. If you do not have the original Half-Life installed, you will be doomed to failure.

That being said, yes, you'll need to purchase Half-Life 1. If you purchased the Silver Edition of Half-Life 2 from the internet then you should have immediate access to Half-Life 1. However, it sounds like you purchased the non-collectors edition of Half-Life 2 from the stores since you mentioned CD's, and that offer does not include the original version of Half-Life 1.

Therefore, to play NS you'll need to find a bargain bin somewhere with an old copy of Half-Life for $5, or you can purchase it over steam for a dollar amount > $5.

Sorry I can't provide you with better news Archfiend.

That is odd because NS installed with hl2 before. I've reinstalled windows since though, and bought hl2 from steam. I wonder where the problem in that is.

I have hl1 still. I'll try using that if all else fails.

Just following up after some configuring:

I had 2 accounts registered to the same email. One was authenticated for hl1 and the other hl2. I was trying to install ns in the hl2 user's id folder. After logging in as my other account, quitting steam, and installing to the hl1 account... I was able to get ns working.

Kind of a nub problem but hey, I'll admit it and heres a bit of help for anyone else.
