Hello fellow NS2 fans!!

If you have been tracking recent news from Natural Selection 2 you may have noticed that development has been fully taken on by a Community Development Team, comprised of truly outstanding members from the community who are dedicated to continuously improving the game they love for everyone. While the team has been moving at an impressive pace with improvements (with much more to come!), fixing many of the most requested issues since before the game was released, and even including new features - there remains one area we have not been able to adequately tackle :
The Linux side of NS2.

Recognizing this, we have come to the conclusion that we need more Linux savvy developers onboard. This means we need you, the community, the Linux penguins of the TSF Marines to become part of the CDT and help improve NS2 on Linux systems for everyone, everywhere! If you feel like you’ve got the skillset, time, and motivation for this; and the ability to effectively and amicably work with a team, please apply today and in the very last comment box write “I want to be a Linux CDT member!”. Be sure to give as much information as you can about yourself, as well as your skillsets and background.

We hope to see you on the team soon!

Every time you ask for troubleshooting without providing system info, ATI adds a rendering bug for an upcoming game.

When you feel you need to be rude or angry about a game, just read these links and remember what role you are playing:

I wonder if this request could be made a bit farther out, such as on some Linux development and gaming forums. While most Linux users are not your typical hard-core gamer, they are often savvy about technical/development and may jump at the opportunity to have a positive impact on opening up Linux to the world at large, even if it is a niche game like NS2. All you need is a single Linux developer guru to jump onboard and the NS2 Linux feature set could leap significantly, even if they never play an actual game.

Maybe this is a stupid question but, what kind of incentive do you offer to the community for their efforts on improving the game? I haven't been following closely the development transition, honestly. How the relationship between the community development team and Unknown Worlds Entertainment exactly works?

Thank you. If I'm understanding this correctly the Community Development Team is just fueled by goodwill and their love for the game. I don't know if you'll find someone similar amongst the Linux community, but I wish you the best of luck.

I thought this is exactly the kind of thing you'd find in the linux community. They contribute to open-source projects they love for no other incentive other then goodwill and because they love it. Surely the same would apply here.

As I understand it, this is not an open-source project. Surely some volunteers will apply to contribute nonetheless.

Nope, we both agree that this isn't an open source project. I am suggesting that if someone is willing to give their time up to contribute to another project for the love of it, then they'd likely do the same here. If I had the ability to help, then I would .. hypothetically, my motivations would be that I am trying to keep a great native linux game going for myself and help others to keep the game alive.

Welp, I registered this account and reinstalled NS2 just for this, but it seems I'm not old enough quite yet. In any case, I'd like to express my interest in advance (I will be back at the end of August :-). I currently work as a software engineer, and I'll be at university in the fall. So I know my way around multi-person projects, though I've never worked on a game before.

Good luck until then; As I said, I'll be back!

    Thanks and cheers!

    Jacob.
