Not to get into the whole taser thing again, but it's a bad idea because (especially alien) gameplay is so movement-oriented. If things stand still they die quickly because it's a fast-paced game. If you could stun something, even for a second or two, it would be as good as a death sentence. Just kind of undermines the whole gameplay pace.
edit: Before you say anything about Onos stun, I know, but Onoses get a stun because they're meant to be overpowered. That's kind of their niche.

Everybody, both in the earlier debate, and now it seems, seemed to think that "Hurr hurr.. all a taser is gonna do is stun an alien.." which is part of why they came out against. It seemed very few people had enough imagination to consider a single, electrical based weapon that packed enough power to kill, could be used either as a distance or melee weapon, as well as used as a type of shield.
Personally, I think we lost out quite a bit when the fanboys bellowed their ignorance.
The first thing people think of when they see the word "taser" is ... a taser. Regardless of any imaginary definition of the word that you care to make up.
At the risk of causing more taser-arguing, I still think the taser could have been a good idea. It's something that would have been pretty unique to the game and there are a lot of interesting possibilities for it's effects. But instead we get the boring old pistol + melee combination that's been standard for about as long as FPS games have existed. At least it's not a knife, right? :p

Must be one hell of a boring map considering there's no Kharaa there.
I was looking those posters as well and I just wanted to add that easter eggs and funny real life references are awesome in a game, they somehow add to the polished feel.

Yeah, the plasma cutter is an easter egg from the plasma cutter weapon from Dead Space.

Or for your more 3-dimensional needs, a nerf mod one:
