If I wanted to make flares useful I'd make the Bulb Zone Caves, Grassy Plateaus Caves, Deep Grand Reef, Mountain Range Caves, Mushroom Forest Caves, Sea Treader's Path Tunnel, Sea Treader's Path Caves, and Underwater Islands Caves biomes darker.
The Aurora has nothing to do with terraforming. It was only going by the planet to set up a phasegate and scan for the Degasi on the way.There aren't enough dark areas in the game for them to be useful. There's a couple short caves at the start but that's it.
Light sticks have the same problem but even worse due to how much later you unlock them. I'd rather it just be a base feature. Having there be a terrain only option can show you some pretty immersion breaking things, unless you're only talking about fauna and not other things like skeletons or flora.I think they did a really good job on the new FX and I like how it actually shows things other than just terrain. The devs are going to release full on expansion packs after release and will make sure that there's enough new stuff that it feels worth it.
