A bunch of Lerks can just wreck rifle marines early game in direct combat. Shotguns don't help a lot either if the distance to the enemies is large enough and you can just spike them down so easily. Because the alien vision would be too good or too bad? Because it's bad in lit rooms, yes. But I found it to be quite usable in dark rooms.
