Losing Hope And Interest

Well I've been playing NS for a couple weeks and I must say that I really really suck at it. I hardly get any kills and I'm always dying, this goes for both Marines and Aliens. I just don't know what to do, aliens rock me all the time and when I'm an alien the marines find a way to perfectly shoot at me with 100% accuracy. It's really frustrating when you spend hours playing and you don't feel like you acomplished anything, you were just target practice for the good players. I also run my mouse sensitivity at the default 3.0.

Just give it a little more time, you'll get better.

on the topic of mouse sensitivity, if you use WinXP, mouse acceleration is on in Half-Life by default, even if you disable it in the driver. To shut it off, add the following to your command line:

    -noforcemparms -noforcemspd -noforcemaccel

Do that and set your sensitivity to about 8 or 9 and see if you get any better. Mouse acceleration sucks because the faster you try and turn to a threat, the more you will over-turn and miss your shot. I just don't see any point to it (even in windows for that matter).

    good luck!

Right click on your shortcut to ns, hit properties

it should have a white box with C:\Sierra\Half Life\hl.exe -ns

Just add it onto the end of that command line and away you go

Or you could just edit the registry and you won't have to add it to the command line of every fps game you want to play

also have a more difficult time removing it, with the removal being far more dangerous and even the application of it potentially harmful.

if you are new to the registry or new in general I highly recommend going through the process of adding it to each shortcut. you probably don't play more than 2 or 3 FPS games at a time anyway.

BOB, rule of thumb: any time you're talking about modifying the registry be sure to stress to newbies how potentially dangerous changing stuff can. =P

lol if this guy has been invested hours into the game he wouldve got used to aiming with any sensitivity/acceleration, i doubt thats the issue. it's more likely hes playing from a 33.6k modem on servers on the other side of the world? or maybe you do just suck

You need to give it some time. I have been playing forever (on and off since the first release). I have played at least 4 hrs a night for 3 months straight, and I'm nothing special(I'm usually in the top 5 for kills though). You just gotta keep at it. I suggest you stick with one thing (marine, skulk, etc.) and get good with that, then move on.

Watch demos, and LOTS of them.
  • BOBDololBOBDolol Join Date: 2003-10-04 Member: 21431Members
Watching demos wouldn't work, he has to develop his AIMING skills and demos won't help him with that. I assume he probably is new to fps games, or don't play them much. IMO the only way to get better is by playing a lot

Do you have trouble moving around? Take the halflife hazard course (training room on steam).

And playing the halflife game all the way through helps. From multiplayer fps, I hardly have any trouble beating it on hard.

Aiming trouble? Practice. Every fps needs it, theres no escaping it. You can fool with your mouse sensitivity (how far the screen moves when you move the mouse) to find what suits you. I like one of 9-10 (my friends say its really high). The higher it is, the more "loose" your mouse is. You can spin around quicker, but you can't aim as well. With low mouse sensitivity, you have precise aim, but you can't spin around. In ns, you want a fairly high sensitivity because you have fast little skulks running circles around you.

    Good luck!

I think a lot of you guys didn't read into this part of what he said. We all joke at all the CS players who try to play NS as though it was CS. Natural selection is confusing and many people don't seem to help newer players. Come on, try to remember that day wwwwaaaaaayyyyyy back, when you were new. How confused were you then?

Here are some tips for getting over the learning curve. Play aliens. Aliens win most public games because they don't require as much team work as marines. Since people who are winning are more likly to be relaxed, they are more likly to help you. Combat is not as important part of winning in Natural selection as it is in CS or DoD. If you arn't good as a skulk yet (this ) don't worry. Try playing as a gorge (this ). Gorges are builders who don't fight, but are the most important class for the aliens. If you do play gorge, becarful about droping "upgrade chambers". People will get mad at you if you don't drop the one they like.

Well thanks a lot to everyone who offered their opinions and help, I honestly didn't think this many people would reply to my post about being a newbie. I actually am pretty new to FPS games, I usually play MMORPGS like EverQuest and Dark Age of Camelot which is really different. So, I really don't have a lot of FPS experience, I think my biggest problem is aiming and moving around while being attacked by skulks. Once again, thanks a lot to all of those who offered their suggestions.

Can't say I agree with the commanding thing BB. No player should start commanding until they have at least a decent amount of experience just being a marine. The best way to learn the basics of commanding is to just watch what your Commander is doing.

hmm.. i just tried this, and messed around with different sensitivities.. and i play WORSE with the accel off, which is odd cause it drives me NUTS when im in my desktop

i guess its actually adventagous in this game, when youre aiming at a skulk in the distance (much like at a guy in a window in DoD while youre K98k) you really need that precise accuracy, and it helps out when aiming at a fade by giving you a quick boost to turn when needed... if you get used to it you can learn to play with it to your advantage

funny, lots of people (myself included until now) hate this "feature," but if you think about it, its almost like a cheat

Like jackazz said: -noforcemparms -noforcemspd -noforcemaccel into your command line. VERY helpful to disable mouse accelleration for all FPSes.

For alien, avoid running straight at people. Watch how other skulks play, try ambushing etc. As for marine, disable mouse accel and turn up your sensitivity. 3.0's fine for CS, but too slow for NS. Try practicing against bots. Finally, INCREASE YOUR FPS! Use tweak guides, lower your resolution, etc. High FPS = smoother mouse movement = accuracy!

QUOTE

lol if this guy has been invested hours into the game he wouldve got used to aiming with any sensitivity/acceleration, i doubt thats the issue. it's more likely hes playing from a 33.6k modem on servers on the other side of the world? or maybe you do just suck

I played CS for 2 months with mouse accel on, and the moment I turned it off, my kill ratio climbed like a mofo. There is no getting used to m accel, it's a useless and annoying feature that's disabled in most other FPSes, but halflife neglects it .

kann_nix: disable mouse accel in XP. Just typing those commands in probably didn't cut it :\. Another possiblity is that you're just not used to the new sensitivity.

Mouse acceleration is really really random though. You could spin around really fast without mouse acceleration too, and you won't even have to set your sensitivity super high. I do it all the time with 10 sens(which is equivilent to 5 senst. on window 98 for some reason).

I suggest the Frontiersmen and Kharaa strategy boards. You can find some helpful tips in there that might help your performance. Now, if I were you, I would try to find my strengths in the game. Maybe you aren't great at head to head combat. You could try being commander from time to time, if you feel like you have some strategic skill. As for aliens, try being lerk/gorge more often, and play a support role instead of being in the thick of it. But, of course, I'm not saying abandon fighting for good. Keep practising, and be patient. There are some freakishly good players out there who might own you the second your head pops around the corner, but don't let that discurage you. Once you get a feel for the game, you'll be hooked.

[EDIT] Whoops, seems like all my ideas were already suggested.... Should have read through the second page...
