<div class="IPBDescription">... after i ended a process in taskman</div> System specs:
pentium 4 1.8 ghz
windows xp home edition
512 meg sdram
32 meg tnt2 model64 pro
ADSL 768/128
Ok this is what happened ... I run windows XP home and i wanted to see how many processes i can end without crashing my system (to free up as much ram as possible).
I ended a process called SVHOST or something like that and it displayed a message that "something something was ended, and as such, windows will AUTOMATICALLY shutdown in 60 seconds ... please save all work" During that time, I could still chat and stuff online.
So windows reboots, and I try to run NS ... and ... I CAN NO LONGER PING THE HALF LIFE MASTER SERVER. I tried over and over again, but it keeps on saying "retrying server request (some IP)"
I tried running HLDS (my private 4 man server) and the error that appears is: ES_WSAECONNREFUSED.
I cannot seem to be able to ping the master HL server AND I also cannot stream music (like listen to streaming radios online). HOWEVER, I can use internet explorer and netscape for surfing, I can run emule, I can run AIM, and I can download files thru IE or Netscape (i tried downloading like 20 meg game demos and it worked).
I'm thinking that I accidentally ended some critical process in Task Man (and although I rebooted SERVERAL times, nothing helps) and now, I can't ping the hl master server or stream music, and possibly other problems.
Can someone please help me or give me suggestions as to how to solve this problem?
Thank you very much everyone!

That would do it.. what process did you end?
Go open up services.msc, and look around to find if any service that you need may have disabled accidentally as a result of your killing SVCHOST process. Also, you can disable some you don't need at all (like Messenger service -_-)... but do not disable unless you are absolutely sure that service is absolutely worthless!
Well, that's my 2 cents. Good luck!
Note: I can't pinpoint what to enable or disable unless I knew *exactly* what your system is, how it is configured to the bone. =x
