I say good luck to the man. I'm sure it's against copyright, but good luck on trying to copy NS. <!--emo&::nerdy::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/nerd.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='nerd.gif'><!--endemo-->

No as he says right there he does not have NS source code and will try to code something very similar from scratch.

    great comic, lol

in regards to the actual topic at hand, this looks promising. there is an open source TFC mod, and it's great. It fixes a lot of the bugs that valve never got around to fixing, and it includes some nice little features. (it took him 2 years to release TFC-R, and it's not even done yet) So maybe if he isn't sent a cease and desist letter, we'll have another cool NS-like mod.

I feel the same as CWAG, it sounds like he's just doing it for personal learning, no harm done.

Also, it sounds like it's just one guy doing it, and that's going to be a lot of work for one person to do. That is, if he does all the modelling, texturing and mapping himself, otherwise i feel it could tread on some pretty thin ice if he does use NS material.

I don't understand the route taken.

It goes without saying that coding an HL MOD is a learning experience for all involved. Why not just start his own project? He doesn't need to recreate anything, but that doesn't mean he can't be "inspired".

It just seems like a silly way to do it. Obviously all coders use examples, but the NS team didn't learn everything they know through mimickry, I'm sure.

This isn't really different than any other open source project that was inspired by a closed source program. Theres tons of them, email clients inspired by outlook, word processors inspired by MSword, media players based on the windows player, etc. I don't see how this seems so rediculous (unless you know the guy and know that he doesn't have what it takes to do this). The linux operating system started as someone trying to do an open source unix, and as much as I admire NS, I think that linux is a larger scale project.

I find it quite different. This is someone making a replica of a program(not being inspired by) as well as doing so with a program which is allready gratis and is not having problems due to being closed sourced(I mean there is no community outcry for hovaring scorpians, rubber nuclear weapons to disperse the aliens or anything else that the NS team just refuses to implement despite the majority's wish. So the NS team is apparently allready listening to the community as well as releasing patches and bugfixes at a high rate).

Any motivation for making an open sourced NS clone seems to be purely personal, not of any utillitarian or other origin.

Or it could be that after flarya made so much money for cm's getting to pt that a week later it was announced that just about anybody could pt. There for tons of people just spent $20 to get pt and now get it for free.

Granted, i mean, most open source programs are created to be a free alternative to retail products. But i'm sure if you created an open source Outlook and called it Open Source Outlook, you'd have Microsoft down on you faster than you can type "Jesuschrist,nobill,NOOOO,don'ttouchmethere...".

    Agreed.

More power to him. I think in the end, if this guy goes the whole 9 yards it may be similar to NS, but I highly doubt it will ba an NS clone. There are alot of different game types you could try out if you had a HL engine + NS coded extras.
  • esunaesuna Rock Bottom Join Date: 2003-04-03 Member: 15175Members, Constellation
It's quite funny really, we're all supporting this guy who's making a clone of NS, and he fully admits it's a clone of NS. That's ok. But if anyone even slightly makes something that resembles a fade or slightly has the same vague story or idea behind it, we flame it to all hell.

    Oh well..

He main reason is probably to try and recreate a commander mode. I know he is claiming to re-create NS but I really think he wants to learn how commander mode could of possibly been done. I know what it looks like. It has programming language syntax, and code blocks, and probably curly braces and comments. I bet it also has conditional if/else logic, as well as some classes and functions.

    That'd be my guess.
