<div class="IPBDescription">as this one is dying :( :(</div>as i'm typing this my monitor is occassionally having image spasms, so I am pretty sure its only got a short time left before its completely dead.

So while I can still read things, does anybody have a good suggestion as to a good 19" (no bigger, no smaller) monitor? Preferably LCD w/ high enough refresh rate to be viable for gaming...

    you think yours has problems?

    my monitors 'spasming' stage came and went a few MONTHS ago <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

    2 months to a week ago it was turning black and flickering white... i.e that glimpse when you turn off your monitor, black with white flash, but heaps longer and bigger <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

    and last night i turned my monitor back on and it was a deep shade of bluish purple sort of thing... and i had to turn off and on again [my monitor] for it to be alright

    hehehe

    Yeah, I would be questioning your motivations for wanting an LCD. I'd stick with a nice flat CRT.

    I'll have to agree with the anti-LCD crowd here. You basically pay twice the price for no real benefit unless you're manic about visiting LAN parties (and even then, you can usually fit your bigger screen in somewhere).

    [edit]On the subject of actual models, I'm currently staring at a LG flat CRT, and am very happy with it. <a href='http://www.lge.com/catalog/prodlist?categoryId=CTG1000496&modelCategoryId=CTG1000497&parentId=CTG1000439' target='_blank'>Link.</a>[/edit]

    I really don't want another bulky CRT though :/

    I really want an LCD for two reasons: 1) Easy to take to LANs (light weight) 2) No glare. I'm in a glare heavy environment. In fact, on EOD's "night time" maps I have to turn the lights off to play. Bleh to that I say.

    Today I went and bought a 19" LCD monitor from a brand called MAG, and tommorrow its going back. More image ghosting than those mansion levels on Super Mario World... So tommorrow its going back to the store and I'm going to pick up the 19" Samsung I originally intended to get, as I just read a review on Gamespy where they rated it best monitor for gaming...

    Ha ha Gamespy, I wouldn't take anything they'd say too seriously. Most likely someone handing cash under the table over there.

    Oh, <i>yeah</i>, let's flame gaming publications according to their revenues. I read Gamespy, I read Gamers With Jobs, I read lots of stuff in between. Sometimes, they're right, sometimes, they're wrong, independently from their size.

    [sniff]

    my monitor is like 5 years old. its refresh rate sux..! so things tend to slow down when there's lots of commotion going on during a game. i really want a thin monitor, but i hate the way LCD looks while playing games. i think it saves on energy too.. but eh..

    maybe for Christmas, i'll buy myself a really nice treat!

    can't wait! i've been needing one for awhile now. <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->

    LCDs are fine. I've used one, and I still am using one. They are far lighter, smaller, consume less power. They are fine for gaming now (older ones were not). Enough with the LCD bashing allready <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Samsung I believe are pretty good actually. Hope your new monitor works out allright ^^

    There was a 18" I saw at bestbuy.com for only $400 as I am in the same market, I'd look it up and give you a link but my mouse just stopped working and I'm having a hard enough time on these forums with just a keyboard. I'm going to get a LCD for the space issue, my computer desk is tiny so I have to have the moniter offset to the right, and my mouse is there and they bump into each other when I'm playing sometimes.

    I saw this monitor at Best Buy last night..

    <img src='http://images.bestbuy.com/BestBuy_US/images/products/5719/5719966_sa.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image'>

    Absolutely looked like a CRT. But, it's only 17" inch.

    But <a href='http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?id=1051384730244&skuId=5403397&type=product&productCategoryId=cat01013' target='_blank'>this 19" looks pretty good too.</a> Except maybe the price <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif'><!--endemo-->

    The one that I have, gah what is its #... meh well its a 19" Flat Screen CRT Daewoo Black Monitor. Got it for $200 and has a max refresh rate of 85Hz, works GREAT.

    Refresh rate does not matter one bit on an LCD monitor. You need to be looking for the Response times, both the rise and the fall. A combined rise and fall time of under 25ms is fine for gaming. This, along with the contrast and the resolution, are the things you need to look for.

    My cheap generic CRT that I got with my 2nd computer almost 6 or 7 years ago still works to this day. Im using it right now <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Long live CRT!

    I have to deny the accusations of LCDs not being worth their money. Well, maybe they <i>are</i> a bit expensive at the moment, but I assure you, you'll love it. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    I have a Philips Brilliance LCD (15") and it's awesome. It's small, light-weight, consumes less power, doesn't radiate and as a consequence, I can stare at it longer. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Furthermore, the image is great at 1024x768 <i>without</i> a digital input, so I can only imagine, what it will be like with a digital one (since my current graphics card doesn't have a digital out). The image is actually the same or better quality than my previous CRT monitor (and it was a good Sony 15" one, not some random trash). <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    POS MONITOR SAGA PART 2:

    Today I went and returned the crappy LCD 19" i got last night, and I got a different brand, Samsung. It blurred less, though still it was aweful aweful. So i took IT back too and got a refund, hung my head low, and bought another CRT :( :( and its too heavy for me to lift out of the car, so i gotta wait till a friend comes over to bring it up :/

    That might be what I got... Its a samsung something or nother.

    The 15" Samsung I got is alive and kicking desipte being 7+ years old and while not beaten, it certainly hasn't been treated entirely nice either after 5 Quakecons. So I figured if I'd get a Samsung of the 19" variety and hopefully it won't die like the stupid KDS pos...

    never ever buy KDS :X
