<div class="IPBDescription">no "owned" pics threads...</div> Just curious, saw Marik locked another topic whose purpose was to show off some of the various 'owned' pics that can be found around the net.
My question, is why lock it? The reasons seemed a little generalized to me.

Maybe they're indeed immature. But a lot of them have comedic value and are worth a good chuckle now and then. I like sending them to friends who've had something mildly irritating happen to them during the day that they've chosen to recount for example <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

If you're still on the net using 56k and browsing a topic which is going to be pic intensive (ie., like so many of those 'post your pic', or 'post pics of your pets' threads that're so prevalent here) then the lag you induce is your own fault. As for the boards, ie., i point to the prevalence of so many your pic/pet pic threads which seem to have no problem finding livelihood here.

This is nothing against Marik, just thought I'd use his prior arguments to spit out a few reasons of my own why I thought it'd be fun to show off a few 'owned' pics from around the net. Judging by the fact there have been a few of said threads there's obviously an interest, why not stimulate it?

Glad to see this is a mature point-by-point response rather than a "why'd u lock omg I hate the mod who did this" type rant. I'll be happy to give my thoughts.
My points 1 and 3 are more linked than I had originally anticipated. The good "owned!" pics, ones for which the picture makes all the difference from it being a one-word text message, <i>are</i> often funny. I'll agree on that. But you also make a good point that the comedic value comes from using them in specific instances. Comedy takes a bit of skill, or artistry, or as an poster stated above, "use in moderation." Consider the type of poster who loves making "owned!" one-word posts left and right in a forum if no images are allowed. If you did see such a person making one-line owned posts, you'd call them a number of things (spammer, flamer, flame baiter, immature, etc. come to mind.) The poster who does the equivalent with pictures is just an extension of this activity.

Yes, but that's where my point 3 comes in. It's rarely just one pic, or if it <i>is</i> just one, then that one will often be considered less than friendly should somebody be offended by it. 2_of_8's "people getting hurt or something" example comes to mind. Whether or not the picture itself doesn't involve minor or major violence, depending on who it's directed to it can be a bit of a slap in the face towards a fellow forum member. If that fellow forum member understands it was meant in jest, so much the better. If not, flamewar. Bad.
To your response to my point 2: I don't know where I'b be able to take statistics from to prove the following, so for now we'll just call this a shaky theory of mine: having an "owned" pics thread seems to increase the number of "owned" pics appearing in other threads on that section of the forums or the forums as a whole. "Post your...pic" threads make it obvious that there will be pictures involved. Regular forum threads do not, so if we can take an action to help users (restricting sig and avatar image sizes, restricting sizes of files that can be posted), we will try to do so, because not all 56k users can switch to broadband (whether for financial or locational reasons).
I'll be the first to admit that my point 2 bases itself on a rather shaky theory. For now, my current opinion of "owned" pic threads still stands on my points 1/3 and the "no spamthreads" rule. If you'd like to point another way in which I may be wrong (your counter to my point 2 was respectable enough) feel free to post. Not locked. (Don't have a reason to yet, anyway.)

I can certainly understand having a disdain for posters who's only reply to a prior post involves bringing out one of the one-line 'owned' pics in their standard repertoire, but this scenario involves said image coming out when trying to have an actual discussion amongst other forumers, whereas in the case of the 'owned pics thread', we're encouraging the pouring out of owned pics because that <i>is</i> the topic at hand, and perhaps just a means by which other online users who'd go in for a laugh or like a bit of ammunition to use against their friends can save a few they like for future use.

This is where you fine folks would come in. I'll be the first to admit an owned pic thread might require a good deal more attention than your normal fare thread, but I still think that if the potentially abusive posters can be kept quiet, the rest would remain within the realm of good taste =)
