Official Steam Color Scheme

Hey everyone,

I was hoping to get some help from the community on customizing the NS Steam color scheme. To do so, place this file in your ns\resource directory (Steam only), then edit it until the fonts, menus, controls and text look good for NS. I can't give out the background that will be used for NS yet, but I'll give you one little piece of it so you can get an idea for the color scheme.

Please post screenshots showing the edits you've made, then I'll take the best one and use it as the base for NS (I may perform further edits on it). Thanks!

What are those colors? Murune? Grayish Black? What do you want? A Marine or alien scheme, or overall a NS theme with all things..

Yes, it does. As you can probably tell, its a screenshot. Also, it looks like there are effects in the screenshot that aren't possible in HL, showing a heavy use of Photoshop. So ya, it shows that its gonna look kickass.

Flay, I think that's wrong file dude. As far as I can tell TrackerScheme.RES has absolutely no effect when placed in a mods resource folder. I'm pretty certain you'll all need to rename that file to ClientScheme.RES for it to work.

(Please note I could very likely be wrong here, I'll report back in a sec)

PS- Reading is your friend. Exactly as Flayra said, that picture is a sneak preview of the official background for steamed-ns, so that you can get a hint on what colours to make your scheme.

No you're quite right Revenge, Flay posted this info himself as well in the "fixing Steam font" thread so this could be a mistake

Unless Flayra means we're meant to be designing a scheme for Steam, and this should go in Steam/skins/ns?

    from my observations:

yes, this is for steam only... (aka, ns 2.1 +)

    DIRECTIONS:

    file goes into folder:
    C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\__e-mail__\half-life\ns\resource

on mine, i had to create the resource folder... if you don't have one CREATE ONE

to test your changes, start up ns in steam, then go to "find servers"

If he meant that then he wouldn't have brought up the idea of a background image, as you'd only see that after you've started NS, and before you enter a server...

Just tested now, and setting all the colours to "255 255 255 255" in my trackerscheme.res ind ns\resource didn't change anything. I'm gonna rename it to clientscheme now and see if it works.

I assure you that it will work fine on NS 2.0, and if only beta testers were able to make these tests then there'd be no point in asking everybody to try the color changing stuff.

it's FOR 2.1+.. will work on whatever version you want to have it on.... just has to be steam....

    **edit**

as you can tell, i'm working very hard to figure out where this goes, how it works, and what i'm doing wrong... so i might make mistakes, we are learning along together....

    TrackerScheme.res and ClientScheme.res don't apear to work

I think ClientScheme might only affect the fonts ... TrackerScheme has to be put under a skin. i.e. Steam/Skins/NS/Resource/TrackerScheme.res

Maybe it would be easier to wait for flayra to tell us what it is exactly he wants

ok well i made a start. I'm still working out how this works. I figure if i update then at least you can tell me what has to go and such. Just went with reds to start.

Keep in mind you will have to make your scheme very dark because of the gamma cranking in NS ... unless Flayra has fixed this in the Beta Steam?
  • FlayraFlayra Game Director, Unknown Worlds Entertainment San Francisco Join Date: 2002-01-22 Member: 3Super Administrators, NS2 Developer, Subnautica Developer
TrackerScheme.res is used instead of ClientScheme.res for VGUI controls, and ClientScheme.res is used instead of TrackerScheme.res for VGUI2 controls. I think the Steam UI is using VGUI2, so yes, I think you guys are right that it should be named ClientScheme.res instead.

I posted part of the Steam desktop background to give you an idea of what colors your scheme should work well with, not for any other reason.

OK wmd and I have been testing stuff, and we'll... We've got bad news, and bad news...

The bad news is that unless you are using the default skin, then both clientscheme.res and trackerscheme.res are in your mod\resource directory are ignored. That's right, custom skins take priority over mod specific skins...

The bad news also is that even with the default skin applied, and every single color set to "255 255 255 255" (producing nothing but big white boxes where my menus should be ingame), the color of all the text was unaffected. Basically those scheme.res files can't change the colour of the text at all...

We know that the old textscheme files still allow mod specific control over fonts and colours even with custom skins applied, however that leaves you with two unhelpful options... Either you put in your own low res bitmap fonts that look all... Bitmappy.... Or you decide to put up the error messages generated when the bitmap fonts aren't present...

So the best way to get proper-looking text is leave all RES_Scheme.txt files in your NS dir and delete gfx/vgui/fonts/*.*
NS will complain but it won't be too hurt

Now, as I said earlier, the NS skin will only work if you use it as a total custom steam skin and not just a ClientScheme (I doubt many people are using only the default skin... most will be using "Grey" or another one).

Here's a quick one I whipped up, trying to match the green + red colours in the picture Flayra posted. Kept it dark because of NS' gammahax Haven't finished the title screen yet....

perhaps the colours need to be a bit more yellow rather than green.

edit: moved to post further down

I know this is a bit late, but I finally figured out the pic. The point of view is from an intersection between two halls. On the right is a hall with red warning lights flashing, and obvious bacterial infestation. On the right is a shiny, steel-walled hall, still uninfested.. A fade, skulk, gorge, lerk, or onos is probably running down the hall on the left, facing the point of view. On the right, several frontiersman marines make their way down their hall, LMGs, Shotguns, and Grenade Launchers at the ready, lit from above by the dim hallway. The viewer can see an impending encounter between the two forces, but the marines and kharaa hustly blindly ahead, oblivious to what is about to take place.

    Am I right?
