Running A Steam Ns Server?

How's your CPU usage?
Recently, it was found out that running the "optimized" 3.1.1.1 version of HLDS dramatically raised your CPU usage. We decided to stick with 3.1.1.0 with some security patches for the sake of less usage and the ability to run a higher maxplayers. If you've got the newest version running, do you see any significant usage change in it? Just curious before I switch over.

Yeah that is a significant problem and no matter how much bitching and moaning the admins do on the Valve Admin mailing list Valve seems unsympathetic. Steam uses HLDS 3.1.1.1d which is well known to be a significant CPU hog. The sad fact is soon you won't have a choice! When the WON servers go down there will only be Steam and SteamIDs and the old HLDS 3.1.1.0 server will not be able to authenticate by it any longer.

It SUCKS and many admins are not happy including myself.

argh! I was hoping they had at least used a newer version in steam to fix the problems of 3.1.1.1... Although I can't say I'm surprised.

there is a post that prodigy made me aware of that hlds can use less cpu usage with 2.4.9-ac9+exr3. Why i dont' know yet but I find it very interesting and will look into it soon. Might have something to do with VM because i think they changed VM modules in 2.4.10

I heard that AMD processors are using less CPU then their Intel counterparts? Any news if this is true or not? I haven't been able to test this since so few people actually have a working NS/Steam client.

that could be true, cuz when i ran by 1800xp+ server (tho it was only a 14 player server, but i ran maps that would use alot of cpu [square_WTH, seige0001234, 123456stshity etc...]) i didn't even know there were problems with cpu usage and ns hogging it
