Custom Textures

<div class="IPBDescription">Anyone needs some?</div> I'm offering to make custom textures for anyone who has a stable, set-for-publishing mapping project.. Just reply here with some contact infos and we'll start the talking.

I want to give game texturing a chance seeing I'm pretty good at graphics, see if I have any potential for that.. But I can't map worth a damn so I resort to offering services to other persons <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo--> Note that after every texture pack I finish I'll post the screenshots here, and with your permission make them publicly available to every mapper who requires them.

    I'd love to get some custom textures for my map ns_shotaro(you can find pictures of it <a href='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/index.php?act=ST&f=4&t=45308' target='_blank'>here</a>)

    Need some new support textures and walls and so on.. Thank you so much if you can make any textures for me!

    Sure let's give it a shot.... But you forgot to give me your MSN or email or AIM screen name or IRC server/nick or phone number or telepathy ID# or... Well, some mean of contacting you! <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo--> Just PM it.

    You come just right <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
    See the lack of wall textures in NS?
    HL's walls look little sci-fi. Same with DoD or CS. So noone uses them. Finally there is only the ecplipse wall remaining <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo--> . So maybe a new walls set or two would get your work into a lot of cool maps.

    My first one.. (done freelance)

    How does it look? 320x128 texture 2x2 grid. This is set to be a reinforced metal wall that provides great defense against pounding/impacts.

    Remeber for best effect texture sizes in HL should be powers of 2, that isn't.

    The cross beams look like they should also be casting a shadow onto the background metal and they aren't.

    You're right.. I'll correct that rightaway.

    I know about the x2 thing, but none of the possible combinations looked right. Had to be a 5:2 ratio :o I'm such a sinner! <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Here is another, freelance also... This one is for a metalic box. Too bad HL doesn't have cool shaders like Q3 <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo--> This one would be shiny.

    The one on the bottom is the 4 sides' texture and the one on the top is, well.. The top.

    I don't see many comments so far D: Ya'll suck I tell you! <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

    To be honest, metal isn't made of clouds, and these are WAY too big to be used sensibly in Half-Life. I'd suggest you get down and dirty 128x128 pixel style. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    The clouds effect is only used because textures seem too plain to me if they're... well, plain D: It's hard to explain.... But I've always thought small-size metal textures that used only metallic traits never looked too good, I like to think of a shiny steel plate when I make metal..

    Who cares anyway, the Cloud tool is polyvalent <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

    [Yes, this also means I think the first of my two textures on here is uglier than the 2nd one <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo--> ...Somewhat.]

    Well they're both public domain.... So whoever wants to use them for their maps should just PM me or reply here with his email or another mean of sending files and I'll send them.

    What i'd recommend, as opposed to using clouds to give metal it's "metal" look, take photos of actual metal and play with it til it fits, or perhaps use existing metal textures and completely change them to your texture. If you want the scratched metal look, try using noise on grayscale then motion blur (or wind) at a 45 degree angle. Ontop of the base metal layer, for more haggard looking metal, add a rust layer by simply creating an orangy / browny colour layer and using the eraser tool where necessary.

    There's a lot of ways of doing metal, just clouds isn't the best one, in my opinion. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    I just knocked this up in around 5 minutes (admittedly, 4 of that was finding the right way to make the "slats" even <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->), it's not perfect by far, but you get the idea. It was done using the plainmet texture from ns.wad and, well, you wouldn't think it was the same one. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    I think you need to find a way to make the screws not look so "stuck on". Maybe indent them a little, add a bit of shadow and shading and they should look a whole lot more fitting. I think, also, the grating itself is set a little too far back, it looks completely detached from it's frame. Possibly lighten the shadow from the frame or give it less depth.

    Otherwise, a lot better than using clouds. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    First off, becareful with photoshop and textures - unless a photo was involved somewhere, they can end up looking very flat.

    Secondly, you both did these rust grates and the orange rust markings are really badly done (I sound horrible here but i just mean they could be improved). Rust gathers at the bottom of stuff, just like water does.
  • ChallengerChallenger Join Date: 2003-06-24 Member: 17647Members
    You make a good point... But it was only to show how I would do a metal grate/rust texture compared to his, it's not a texture I made to be released in which case I'd fix it <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Here's another texture I just did.. This one's a 256x256 (I hate small textures.. Even if it's halflife. I'll save those only for stuff that doesn't need details) wall texture. Looks a bit too metally to my taste, but that can be arranged to one's likings if anyone wants my textures <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

    To be honest, i think you show great potential, but you still need a bit of work to knock your textures from amateur to professional, but i think you have the skill to do it, just more time and practice needed. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    As to that wall texture, you need to do something with the plain bits. Flat colour just looks.... urgh.
  • ChallengerChallenger Join Date: 2003-06-24 Member: 17647Members
    Thanks Es.. I agree with what you said, and I don't mind it since that's what I'm doing at the moment, creating textures for no purpose other than learn the higher ropes and enhance my speed/creativity/knowledge. I don't know how to give "wall" walls (as in, not metal or plastic or wooden walls.. you know, walls like you have in your home <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo--> ) a nice texture that doesn't make it seem like it was carved out of. On that one I gave clouds a crosshatch with 3px 90? motion blur and some slight noise.. Seems pretty alright to me.

    Plain walls = Half-Life Single-Player = yuck <!--emo&:angry:--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/mad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='mad.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&::asrifle::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/asrifle.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='asrifle.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Maybe once the textures stop creation someone could put them in a WAD then in the texture wad post in this forum?
  • ChallengerChallenger Join Date: 2003-06-24 Member: 17647Members
    For sure, with a large thumbnail of every texture like you see in browsers.. But for now I'll just post them one by one here and send to anyone who requests them.

    Well.... let's say it like that: All your glass and metal are clouds. This door consists of metal and glass so it might be best used with a func_illusionary.

    On the other hand I did not want you to create new walls if you just start of creating another Starship Troopers fortress wall <!--emo&:angry:--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/mad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='mad.gif'><!--endemo--> I've already done it!
    No really this is just funny. It's my first texture ever and now you just post it as your first *g*
    Here is a pic of my version made 2 months ago... (no clouds used !!!)

    EDIT: Ok, not my first texture, but one of my first textures AND my first NS texture <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Well there are some similarities yes <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo--> But mine is not a "StarShip Troopers Fortress Wall" as you call it, though it does look kind of like one.. I just thought of a reinforced metal wall for a containment chamber or something like that. It was the only wall of that type that I planned to make anyway <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo--> Looks pretty ugly compared to the other ones (considering it was my first one) too =P

    And I'd like to reiterate again... I'll do custom textures for your maps if you have an idea of what you want, and/or I'll send you lossless versions of whichever ones you liked that I posted here if you PM me what you want and how to contact you..

    This is partly related to a job I'm working on getting at the moment so I need any experience I can get so help me out here <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->
