    yes, <a href='http://rcbot.houstondod.com/' target='_blank'>Rocket-Crowbot</a> or the <a href='http://whichbot.sourceforge.net/' target='_blank'>Which-Bot</a>.

    There not really that smart though....

    You can learn the basics of gorge and commander thought and sometimes i actually have good games with them....

    RCBot is gonna release a new version soon. Neither of the bots do 2.0 moves tho liike metabolize or such. They are good for making strats, learning basics of comm/gorge, attacking!

    OK, then i wait for that version <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    They still are damn good shots. Being machienes, the hardest part of coding them is making them miss. Once you've coded them to shoot at you, no amount of dodging will help.

    Practise your own weapon skills against them. They are also acceptable for use when comm practasing. However, when playing eclipse they hardly ever go out the right door...
  • clamatiusclamatius Join Date: 2003-03-27 Member: 14948Members, Constellation
    Actually, BlueNovember, you are not correct. Making them miss is actually rather easy, relatively speaking. - it's just that usually bot creators leave the aim as very good or perfect to make playing against them more challenging, since that's much easier than improving the general AI level.

    Parsing the terrain to navigate properly is the hardest part of bot creation - partially transparent obstacles like handrails and dynamic obstacles like elevators are usually the most problematic for autonomous bots. The HL engine has a kinda weird treatment of ladders which makes them a pain in the butt as well.
  • BlueNovemberBlueNovember hax Join Date: 2003-02-28 Member: 14137Members, Constellation
    Well yes, obviously. :D . I was talking about the weapon bit only. Yes. That's right. Yes.

    I suppose it would be easy enough to make bot nodes by hand on a map-per-map thing, but as you say making a bot that is autonomous would be nightmarish. Do you happen to know which one the WhichBot is?
  • clamatiusclamatius Join Date: 2003-03-27 Member: 14948Members, Constellation
    Autonomous just means there's noone controlling them, which accounts for most bots (arguably not marine bots going to a waypoint).

    WhichBot uses a mesh of waypoints on a map-by-map basis. Placing them well greatly affects how well the bot will play on the map, so it's not quite as easy as you'd think.

    I tried the Rocket-crowbot, but the bots just keep running around in the same narrow places, and they don't obey my waypoints. Should they be able to find the waypoints through the stairs and stuff on the levels? BTW, is it ok that I have a directory ns/rcbots, and the files "*.rcw" in ns/rcbots/maps, not in ns/maps?

    No.

    Half life
    +\
    ++|-----NS
    ++|-----Rcbotns
    +++++\
    +++++ |--Maps (*.rcw)

    That works for me. Remember to run the batch file too.
  • BlueNovemberBlueNovember hax Join Date: 2003-02-28 Member: 14137Members, Constellation
    Sorry. That is such a mess. HTML won't let you have [space][space][space] etc anywhere, so I had to change them for '+'s.

    Just for clerity, (which has nothing to do with speed btw,)
    Half life directory: Contains 'rcbotns' AND 'ns'
    NS: Contains only the rcbot stuff that the installer puts there
    rcbotns: Contains all the stuff from the zip file. Run the install.bat thing in here.
  • porttikiviporttikivi Join Date: 2002-11-23 Member: 9723Members
    The install.bat complained about "CS Retail" not being installed!? So I installed manually, and I installed to the directories that I am told here, as my earlier post indicated. Still the soldiers will often be more or less stuck somewhere near the base, not obeying my waypoints.

    BTW, the official guide/manual pop-up pages can't be used on a smaller than 1024x786 resolution, bacause they have no scrollbars. And I am trying to figure out what is the relation to "armor levels" to "advanced armor"? I just can't get the latter in order to build e.g. HMG.
  • SudzzSudzz Join Date: 2003-08-01 Member: 18663Members, Constellation
    Yeah, I tried the install thing and it asked if I had retail. Then it said to type the directory. Then it closed after I typed it.
  • porttikiviporttikivi Join Date: 2002-11-23 Member: 9723Members
    OK, I solved it. Contrary to the instructions, you willl actually have to move the ns/rcbotns/maps/*.*rcw files to the ns/maps directory. The *.rcw files are ready made reasonable waypoints or walking paths for the robots for ns maps. They are dynamic and created or modified at robot run-time, though.

    The manual BTW is unusable even in 1024x768. But I know how to get "Advanced armory" now: you research it by clicking Armory and then choosing the advanced armory icon in Commander view.

    Huh? I have CS Retail. What do I type when it asks for the folder?
  • CheesehCheeseh Join Date: 2002-11-05 Member: 7135Members
    you HL folder e.g.

    C:\Half-life

    or

    C:\Sierra\Half-Life

    or

    C:\Counterstrike

    whatever (dont put the '\' at the end though)

    clamatius, when is the next version of whichbot going to be released?
  • SudzzSudzz Join Date: 2003-08-01 Member: 18663Members, Constellation
    Agh, I cant run whichbot and rcbot at the same time. <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo--> I want which bot as alien because Rc bots as aliens dont seem to build any other hives. Or.. anything..
    Well.. RCbots dont really do anything.. hrm..
  • BlueNovemberBlueNovember hax Join Date: 2003-02-28 Member: 14137Members, Constellation
    You can run them at the same time apparently.
    I tried it, and it messed up. Mind you, I have the most twisted NS directory ever, and I still have ns 1 installed.

    Anyway, give me a minute and I'll tell you how to do it/get link.
    There's something you need to add to the commandline you run NS with.

  • BlueNovemberBlueNovember hax Join Date: 2003-02-28 Member: 14137Members, Constellation
    ...but why use bots anyway when you can play online?

    I use them for evening (if that's possible, 3bots per human maybe?) the teams on LAN parties.
  • SudzzSudzz Join Date: 2003-08-01 Member: 18663Members, Constellation
    Well lately I have been freezing every minute online. So I do LAN server.

    The online freezing is wierd sometimes..

    Sometimes I can still see people walking around me, and sometimes everything stands still.

    That's probably because you did not move the *.rcw files to ...ns/maps. As I said earlier in this thread, the instructions are faulty on this. The *.rcw in wrong place mean the robots don't know any routes across the maps and can't do much anything except at the base.

    I've got the way-points for the common maps, you want me send?

    On the subject, why are they different file types to the ones already installed?
    I can't remember if this was to do with my old version of RCBot, but if it is, I've already fixed it. I just can't remember.

    Does someone know the file types for the different versions of hand? Put me out of my uncharacteristec ignorance... <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->
