Per-player Throughput Requirements

Is there any way to estimate the necessary bandwidth needed per player on a dedicated server? For example, say I want to setup an 8-player server. If there was an estimated value needed for each player, say 50kbps, I could then say that perhaps I'd need around 400kbps to maintain 8 players with reasonable lag/ping times.

Does that make any sense at all? Basically, I want to throttle the bandwidth on my NIC in my server, and need to know what a reasonable rate might be...

    In case anyone's curious, on my 14-player server running on a 1.2ghz PIII with 1.2gigRAM on a T3 line, the average output hovers around 50-60kbps...

    A easy way to put this,

    8 Clients - 16kbps per client
    12 Clients - 20kbps Per Client
    14 Clients - 24kbps Per Client
    20 Clients - 28kbps Per Client

    Note these are kbps not KBs <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    And per client, The more people, the more bandwidth per client.
