What Kind Of Frontiersman Are You?

<div class="IPBDescription">C'mon, fess up!</div> I prefer being an engineer/scout.

Ideal load-out: Lvl3 LMG, JP, Welder
Favored targets: Lerks and Gorges. I hate those things, if given the choice between shooting at an onos or shooting at a gorge, I'll probably pick the gorge - hoping to get rid of the mobile defence chamber first.

Strengths: Good support man. I'm the guy in the HA train with the welder always out. I'm the one staring down the hallway while the rest of the team suits up and humps the armory. I'm the one who'll dive between the legs of an onos to pick up a fallen gun, if only so that I can bring it a step closer and keep it around a bit longer. I'm the guy who crouches in front of the vent so someone else can climb on me to get into it. I'm the one who ignores the armory after respawning -- if I've just respawned, I'm probably needed somewhere else more than I'm needed at the armory.

Weaknesses: Poor aim. Don't waste the res on giving me a bigger gun. I probably won't be able to use it well enough to make it worthwhile. The long reloading times on the SG/HMG/GL spell death for me. Low initiative. If I don't have a task to do, I'll take up a guarding position or tag along with a group.

    Builder/Welder/Support

Ideal load-out: Lvl3 LMG or (the new and improved) shotgun, Welder
Most Detrimental Loadout: GL, JP. Commander, you just wasted how many res?

Like you, I also suck at combat. In1.04, I made ideal cannon fodder/distractionary rambo, running through the map emptying half a clip of LMG into every RT I saw to divert skulks ona wild goose chase, but thanks to Res4Kills, it now costs the team even if I die with my starting loadout, so those days are over. I now prefer to build or weld some stuff, though occasionally I can gun down a particularly stupid skulk zooming along the corridor towards me head-on. If I'm lucky. Unfortunately, whenenver I build on a public server, the guy guarding with the HMG turns around and decides to "help" me build, so I end up letting go of the use key and trying pitifully to guard him and the other troops (all building) with my pathetic LMG and shaky, shaky aim.

Sometimes big weapons fall on me by accident. I really hate it when that happens.

Maybe you two just need better crosshairs. I used to never be able to aim for crap til I got a new crosshair... then I could usually take out a few skulks before they finished me off, and was typically one of the best marksmen on the pub teams. It's really not that hard to aim at all, just "I put the skulk in the middle of this square, then hold down the fire key til I kill it."

If one is on you and you're reloading, hop around it to buy some time. Hopefully you can finish it before it gets the final bite on you.

    Assault Support/Rambo

    Ideal Load-out: HA, GL, Welder

Favored Targets: LERKS, i hate them, i want to kill all of them. They are flying rat-lizards and they need to stop spamming spores and die. Anything in a vent.

Strengths: Good with a GL, seems to be a lost art with some people. I can hit fast moving objects like lerks pretty conistently, and am good with the off the wall, over the oc, around the corner, up the gorge's rectum shots. I'm good with hmg, but others are better, so i usually go for the grenadier position. If i have a regular kit i usually sneak around the back of an oncoming attack and take out the gorges and lerks from behind.

Weaknesses: I tend to chase down large retreating aliens in the hopes of killing them while they are weak. this leads to me running head first into an oncoming onos fresh out of the hive. I;m rather conservative when i comm, i like to expand slowly, and don't risk res on weapons, i like upgrades better.

    Assassin

    Load-out: shotgun/jetpack

Favored targets: skulks, gorge, lerks and eggs. I also like to rush to popular res spots...what I do is hide somewhere...and If I get lucky a skulk will appear and start egg time toward a gorge....an easy target and a nice res difference too.

Strengths: Tends to rack up serious res by getting kills for res. Helps commander in seizing res spots.

Weaknesses: Can get caught up in alien ambushes...but usually can make 1 by 1 hits.

Weakenesses: Keep rushing over and over.

Whatever you want to call me.

    Loadout: Lvl.1-3 shotty, Pistol, Jetpack

    Favored Targets: Skulks, Fades, Oni

Strength's: Wah? Its next to impossible for someone to rate their own strengths without being favored/depressed about certain things they are proabably blowing out of proportion.

    Weakeness: Uhhh, llama's.

    Rambo

Go to hive / dual res by myself and basicly win the game for my team by leading the comm and the men to the key spots and racking up kills.

Will take a shotgun if given, won't ask for one or armoury hump. I usually grab like 125 ammo from the armoury for my lmg then run off.

    Hmm probably scout(aka rambo) tbh

If a comm's got plans then sure I'll follow them, but if I'm not needed I'll look around the map and try and distract aliens. I find if you knife a res node a bit one by one skulks come a-lookin' who I can then kill for res.

I play dod alot and am a pretty good shot, so that helps. (Spetznaz_1 is probably better tho)

Loadout: JP/any gun the bigger the better.

    Favoured Targets: Enemy RT's

    Strengths: Good distraction

    Weaknesses: Alien teamwork

    Position: Scout/ Assault

    Loadout: Shotgun + Pistol

Early game I usually sneak off to a quiet res node away from the alien hive for capping, from there i'll either move onto the next rt, or go grab a buddy and take down an alien rt (During clangames I sometimes get an sg to do this, but we usually cant afford it on pubs). If we ever get to an end game march i'm the guy with a shotgun/jp/welder backing up the ha train and trying to keep them alive.

Strengths: Good Aim generally except with hmg (i hate hmgs, mucho). Good headphones when scouting.

Weaknesses: Not good in a team of marines, I much prefer scouting silently around the map alone than waiting to be eaten by 4 skulks at the double node while NSPlayer and NSPlayer(1) 'guard' me.

    Defender/Human Turret

Equip: welde,Gun of comms choice/jp if i get that

My mission, to defend base or outlying res point. I get to watch everyone storm off to their death as I find a nice stretch of hallway to pick off charging skulks. I don't care if the res gets attacked, better that way because they stop moving long enough for me to unload a pistol into them. I can always weld it back up. If I have been sent to build a res point or other soon to be alien food structures, I guard the other guy while he builds. Mostly because I don't trust others to watch my back.

    Secondary mode, when on assault:
    Sarge/Yelling guy

    Equip: mic and attitude

I am the one not in the chair saying "Stop humping the armory, lets move as a team, someone cover the rear." I'm the one who tells you to stop standing in front of the OC because its killed you three times now. I'm the one telling you not to attack the hive until the rest have caught up so the aliens don't know we are here. I'm the one who tries to make sure the comms orders are being followed, especially when I don't agree, because that's what I expect marines to do when I comm. I do ask for clarification, and suggest something if things are really impossible, but if he says yes then I coax everyone to their death. Follow orders dangit. When we attack, I switch back to defender and cover from spawning skulks and aliens trying to save the hive.

    Support/ Welder

Ideal Loadout Armour lvl 3/ welder/ LMG/ Jet Pack

Favoured targets : Onii, Xenocidal skulks.

I can aim but i dont like to shoot aliens too often. Cept onii. Ill unload anything i got if i find one. And usually die for it. Fond of knife rushing them. Rarely works. It did once. I laffed for hours. I preffer to build what the comm says, and i like the lmg to almost anything else. Ill just build and repair and sometimes shoot things. Early game im skulk bait. I can use the grenade launchers crosshair with deathly accuracy. Dont fire all at once. I time it so theres a explosion every second or two.

<!--emo&::marine::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/marine.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='marine.gif'><!--endemo--> Strengths : I will listen to the comm. Almost unquestionaningly. Not a horrible shot with a lmg. I have alot of practice with the thing.

<!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif'><!--endemo--> Weakness : I will listen to the comm. Almost unquestionaningly. Once give a welder i love to turtle, healing armour and buildings.

    I scout.

I stay lmg even when there is HA being passed out so I can gain mobility. If the comm doesn't have an obs I run ahead of the main attacking group to check out what would be the easiest way to penetrate the alien hives, even if he has an obs; I can save him a lot of energy if I can get to my destination.

Early game I typically run straight to an empty hive and hide till an alien comes to drop a node so that I can pick him off.

If given a waypoint, I almost always follow it; or if the comm tells me to do something i'm there. I do handyman work.

If i'm in the main attacking group I play the back guard, picking off the loners who usually try to flank.

I guess that would define my playing style as a marine.

    Marksman

Good shot with a LMG, HMG or Shotgun. Basically, anything that shoots lead, I'm the man you want. Skills came from 5 or 6 years of Quake 3, Counter-strike and other FPS. However, I won't hesistate to trade my gun for a welder to weld my teammates.

Strength : Good aim. Does not rambo.

Weakness : Doesn't know what to do in a game, neither do I rambo for fear of R4K. So you usually see me guarding a base or following a assualt group.

    Base ****.
Equip: Welder, gun of comm's choice (prefers LMG or shotty, _loathes_ the GL), standard armor unless we're wallowing in res and the comm is handing out HA like candy on halloween.

IPs damaged? I'm on it. Armory almost dead and none of those humping it notice? BAM! Welded! Need something built, but everyone else is off killing things? Don't worry, I got it covered. Onii rampaging through the base? I'm the dude behind the turrets with the welder, occasionally chasing the big lummoxes away by welding them in the arse.

Just...don't ask me to attack alone when I have anything other than my LMG.

    Commander

    Equipment: Command Chair

When I play marines in 2.01b I usual go comm.

Strengths: Ability to effectively use the squad system to manage different battle groups. Expert knowledge of all the classic maps and some of the new ones.

Weaknesses: Stacked alien teams, rambo marines that do not respond to commands.
  • SuddenFearSuddenFear Join Date: 2003-06-21 Member: 17571Members
    All-rounder

Equipment: Full upgrades preferred. Not picky about weapons or HA/JP.

Strengths: Pays attention to and follows orders. Can use and apply most weapons, equipment or attack strategies well. Decent shooter. Happy to go one-man attacking a hive if equipped with jetpack and shotgun.

Weaknesses: Without specific orders, can wander around. Has a habit of attempting to run past OC-filled rooms, so requires multiple medpacks if on the offense. Gets annoyed with running aliens, so might chase them off and temporily abandon his station. Has a habit of screaming "MINE SPAM :D" if marines have nearly lost and are stuck in their base.

People who say that jetpacks suck in 2.0 need to try it more. ;P I single-handedly killed two hives last night, with just a jetpack and a shotgun. Leapt on the top of them and within a minute, one dead hive. Since all the aliens were Onii, none of them wanted to go skulk. ;D

    Distraction / support (depends)

My aim is still being improved, as I am new, and I am starting to learn what the important locations on the map are.

Preferably, a good comm tells me where to go, together with a few people, and then I play actually quite decently. I prefer to build structures instead of guarding builders, since other players are still often more efficient and faster at killing things.
Otherwise, I will run off with a scout group or form a scout group to get some RTs up.
Equip: Mostly on pubs I run around with LMG, but have been seen with shottys on occasion.

Strengths: I do whatever the COMM says, never whine for anything.

Weaknesses: Don't bother dropping too much res on me, I sometimes still die when the odds are in my favor.

    Comm's Pet

Equipment: Whatever you'll give me buddy old pal, but I sure do love HAs and shotguns.
Strengths: I'm the first at the WP. I'm the last to pick up weapons and equipment. I'm help give orders to the guys who don't understand. I say "No HMG yet!" so you don't have to. I get more Onos kills because I'm the one that chases them. I don't ask for health at 90%, and I'm not afraid to jump back to base to save the PG from an Onos when I'm using an LMG. That's why we have IPs.
Weaknesses: I get less skulks kills since I'm not off rambo'ing, so I earn les res. I try to help, but sometimes I don't show enough initiatie in sneaking into a hive and setting up a base or something. I don't have the best aim in the world, but that's more my problem and not my role's problem ;-)

    Squad Leader

Ideal Loadout: Level 3 Shotgun, Pistol, Jetpack

Favoured Targets: Fades and Oni, I've developed quite a bit of skill at dropping the big guys.

Strengths: Mobile, and capable of getting enough of an overview to keep a squad full up on orders while the comm readies structures and medpacks. Able to outmanuver the dangerous larger Kharaa species and force them to retreat or die while the squad supports.

Weaknesses: More fragile than HA rines, and incapable of repairing them or structures. Far more effective at close range, where the strongest Kharaa weapons come into play.

    Squad leader

Ideal loadout: LMG(don't care really) with 2-3 other marines on my back with their ideal loadouts.

Favoured targets: I dance with onii.

Strengths: I can command a team of 3-4 people really well. I coordinate all my attacks with the commanders main plan in mind, encourage all of my team to do well, never chastize my team for bad playing, always ensure my team gets the right gear for the job.

Weakness: I almost always never have HA or JP with heavy weapons. Why? I want the rest of my squad to have those armaments before I do. That way they don't feel left out. I also generally take only one marginal player with me and the rest are newer characters.

Philosophy: Stick with me, stick with the commanders plan, we'll get the job done and I'll get you the toys. That simple. Teamwork doesn't get spelled with an "I" and I don't expect that from my squad. This is a game, and its not worth getting upset over, so lets just try and have some fun. Everyone works together, no one goes alone, no one is left behind. You die together as a squad. If you don't like that you don't come with me.

    Sarge

Ideal loadout - Anything, but preferentially a Welder and Shotty.

Favoured targets - Gorges, sensory chambers, whatever the comm points me at.

Strengths - Great sense of team play, experience as a gorge, observation, coordination.

Weaknesses - Detest the GL, prone to throwing the GL at another marine to get it off me.
  • MaxGallagherMaxGallagher Join Date: 2002-12-30 Member: 11627Members
    Squad Member

    Loadout: shotgun, pistol, JP

    Favoured Targets: Skulks, Fades

Strengths: I'm a good shot, and give decent cover, so I'm most effective acting as backup to a couple other skilled players. I'm not afraid to take point, or head into heavily infested territory. I don't waste time humping the armory or begging for weapons...i go where the comm needs me as fast as I can. But I never Rambo, especially when the comm has invested res in me.

Weaknesses: Multiple aliens always psyche me out, so I tend to get pwned if more than one attacks me while im by myself. I'm not good enough at combat or leadership to act as a "squad leader" type. I tend to reload at bad times. I /hate/ not having my pistol to fall back on, so I tend to not carry welders.

    shotty/pistol/LA

I do basic stuff, I try to follow orders and try to stay with the group, if they're sticking togather.

I've survived 80% of a round on my original spawn with a shotty... till I tried to take down a skull who was hiding above an elevator... (that one elevator from cargo towards Bio-hive...)

Fav target: anything that move <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo--> actually skulks. Fun kills. Not that challenging if they don't have sensory chambers, or a freakish gravity aided ambush... Damn yee gravity! D.AMN YEE!

Weaknesses: I loath the slowness of HA... probably the only reason I don't succumb to the HA "I AM TEH GODXOR" psyche... I probably won't be able to support anything more expensive than a Shotty... HMGs just... no... not enough stopping power at short range...

Hmm, its hard to rate yourself... I call this kind of frontiersman... Jiiiggggaaa whhhhaaaaaaaattt?!

I usually play with friends, so we have crazy long clan tags that are stupid and mean nothing but look crazy. We just have fun and do pretty well.

Strengths: On a scale of 1 to 10, im awesome. I'm an all rounder, good but not the best at everything. I guess I really like strategery. Fun stuff. I'm the annoying guy who a pack of skulks dies too... Then again, I'm the guy that one skulk kills and keeps chuckling over... I'm the reason all the res towers are flashing red... I'm that guy who the comm keep likes to give orders to... I'm also that annoying guy who talks way to much, and uses up over 50% of the teams total comm voice time...

Weaknesses: I usually play aliens, so you won't see me on your team much, though that will change now that aliens are finally equals.... (marines owning in versions earlier than 2.0 made me bent on seeing the alien team rock!) And yeah... I do talk alot on that comm thingy...

Guns: Anything that can be on me after I get a jetpack, a spork would even do!

Favorite target: Damaged ones, retreating ones, anything that gives me a sign that I'm winning. An onos when I'm in a vent...

Hated target: Gorges with web ability, A Slow Gurgling Fatty Ball of Death ... I shutter each time I think of that combo...

Targets - Any and all, depending on situations, will go for smaller threats first if faced with an onos, also take out any SCs i can find

Strengths - Can aim with most guns now, shotty/lmg particularly, has good understanding of game mechanics (would rather use armoury than try to reload that god awful HMG manually), can organise or take initiative without needing to whine to com, squad leader if no-one has mike, adaptive even mid combat, can make available and sugest to com tactics if non are planned (sneak upto undefended hive for pg shotty rush, gather a marine or two and make rt rushes), can sit back and go with the flow if nessicery, would throw self infront of regen onos on way out of base so he can be finished off or suitable at first foolish but potentially helpfull inginueties

Weaknesses - Overconfident and fulla myself <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo--> , aim can be very inconsistant, has deepseated loathing of turrets even in suitable sittuations, liable to give alittle too much rfk if not given a plan to work to or backup, arch nemisis being 2+ gorges, still believeing that they're a joke combat class without web very mistakenly

    Base defender/ninja spy/support/GL/mines

Use me for instantly picking off a lerk in the vent when you can see the little ventricle off his tail. Also useful for wasting 3 incoming skulks with LMG/Pistol/Knife.
Also use me for sneaking into a hive via m4d vents and building a phase gate/CC/TF underneath the hive while the base is being ravaged. Or use me to pick off gestating onos in crazeh spots.
Pretty good at providing accurate firepower in mobile assault situations (ie defending a building resnode)
    Also have a mastery of grenade launcher trajectory <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
    <i>Ultimate </i>mastery of mines, too <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
Also pretty good for putting oneself in a selfless position, ie chasing down running fades/onos rather than reloading.

    DON'T use me for:
Jetpack attacks (I'm terrible with jetpack)
Shotgun rushes (not much good at all with that gun)
HMG (somehow, I'm not good with this ultra-nub cannon; I always lose it after about 1-2 kills)
    Welding (I HATE WELDERS!!!)
    Pointman situations :x
