Aim

and why do I suck at it?
While watching some NS demos, I've noticed that some people can literally "track" a skulk running at top speed across the wall, acquiring several direct hits. My question is, how the hell do they do this? The only thing "Aim wise" I can brag about is my skill with the shotgun, but that doesn't require half as much aim as an autofiring gun (more like a sense of timing).

So, for all you expert marksman out there, were you born with this aiming ability? Did some sort of dramatic realization teach you to aim? Did god come and give you purpose? Or do you hack?

And just out of curiosity, what's your sensitivity level?

All I know is most of those people have their sensitivity set so high they have trouble hitting stationary objects sometimes.

I have an insane reflex level, very high. I've recorded demos and have been accused of aimbot before. Why do I have this? No clue. I play the piano, so I can move my fingers fast, and my natural body traded "bulk" with "reflex".

    6' 2" and 155 lbs.

I'm fast, and I'm hard to hit, but if you hit me....I go down pretty hard. I can get back up pretty fast, but still....punches hurt.

When I play games, I am only using what's needed for games, my high reflexes.

My sensitivity is about 3/4 of the way up, because the way it runs out-of-box I have to lift the mouse to turn around in a complete rotation (not sure if it's mouse interaction or the default settings are just that bad).

I'm not an expert at shooting skulks, but I can do a fair job. The trick is just to point straight at it (don't bother trying to lead or something like that). That's about it

Also, jumping around and evading is the other half of the equation. You can last pretty long in close quarters with a skulk because they're moving too fast to really pay attention to what you're doing half the time (not the good ones, but...). If you've ever tried being an insanely fast skulk you'll probably find that when targets jump around and there's multiple targets it's a tough hit. And don't underestimate the utility of the flashlight, it lets you catch those dark corners a lot better. In addition, try to shoot in its "average" location. If there's a skulk bunny hopping like hell and you try to track it with your mouse, you'll just spray a ton of bullets a step behind and get really confused. If you shoot at medium height and just track its location horizontally (looking from a top-down perspective) you'll do a little better. Errm, that's about it. In an unrelated hint, switch immediately to gun after your LMG/HMG/Shottie clip runs out (or vice versa), and don't be so quick to dismiss switching to knife if you're alone and it's close quarters with a skulk after your second weapon runs out. Reload usually gets you killed.

Even then, I get destroyed half the time by a celerity 3 skulk because they're so damned fast. So, I guess, just keep playing

    Practice makes perfect.

Keep practicing and you'll adjust eventually, I've got a strong FPS background but I had a bit of a hard time hitting bunnyhopping skulks when I first started playing NS.

Now it's not too difficult at all, however I'll have good days and bad days..

FYI my sensitivity is 18.5 (my mates can't handle the mouse speed, noobs )

Sensitivity values give no information whatsoever about the rate your crosshair moves across the screen.
Not only is there the factor of the mouse itself - even the mousepad makes a difference.

If anything, measure your sensitivity at rotations/10cm, that is how many times you can spin 360 degrees on the screen over 10cm of your mousepad - along those lines.

In regards to actual aim - some people are born with excellent visual-motor coordination skills. For most it takes a lot of practice, not only in NS but also in other games. And not even necessarily first person shooters. Assuming aim is required, the more intense and demanding the game is the greater your aim (with the cursor) has to become in order to compete. If you ask people with good aim about other games that they used to play in the past (or still play), you'll find certain patterns.

However, aim isn't all about skill. There are many other things that factor in, like mood, physical health and fitness, hardware (higher FPS and wide screens for example). I'm not prepared to ramble on about all of them right now.

I'm sure there are guides out there to improve your aim.

I'm not a great shooter. I get owned in most FPS against decent players, but I still do quite ok with my kill/death ration in Natural Selection. Why? Because after a while you begin to see patterns in player movement, and learn to anticipate what they are up to. Makes you able to shoot ahead of that skulk running madly around, or getting behind that raging oni for easy shotgun target practice.

Of course, you also train your eye-hand coordination when playing a lot, but that is not the major factor of my improvement anyway.

Get 100 fps: Turn off vsync, change your resolutions that best fits your box, change details of hl.

Turn OFF mouse accerleration: This is the #1 mistake people use, they have mouse acceleration on which can TOTALY @#$@#$ your aim. When I turned mine off my aim went up 20-50%. *Go into your mouse settings*

Turn up gamma/brightness if your moniter sux, my friend has a moniter that needs nothing it actually needs to be dimmed because he moniter is freaking h4x, my moniter is ok, and my other friends is SOOOOO dark its crazy. I suggest dling a gamma/brightness program to set it to a good level that allows you to see as best as you possibly can.

Practice? Go marines during pubs more and practice aiming, try going to a server that actually will build movement chambers rather then sensory for maximum practice.

Sensitivity of 3. You just get used to playing with a set sensitivity. Most peeps who played quake or unreal are happy with a higher sensitivity (doublefigures). Those who played hldm, cs or marathon play with a lower sensitivity (below 5). The big difference in these engines is the prescence of mouse acceleration. Quake and UT both sucessfully disable windows mouse acceleration, HL and Marathon do not. Thus you can have a low sensitivity for long distance aiming and by moving your mouse quickly you can still track close in targets.

I think you will find that all the players you see who shoot straight regardless of the movement of their target have played a depressingly large amount of FPS games, as have I . Sometimes, I don't use my mouse to aim at all. I'll strafe after a horizontally running skulk, and dispatch it with no problems. Electrical Tape is right about the cold hands too. I'd guess it has something to do with blood flow to hands letting the muscles work better, but I don't know the technical reasons. Scarlet Pheonix makes a good point about swithing to the next weapon and not reloading. Just to today I snagged a non-redemption onos with my trusty pistol . Also, bieng good with a shotty IS aim of a sort, at least in my book. More timeing than tracking, like you said, but it is defiently aim.

As a skulk, I have really gotten good at leap-biting. I purposely leap right behind my enemy, turn 180 in the air, then charge biting. It takes a beat for the player to go from -skulk-leaping-straight-ahead- to -skulk-behind-me-. Then they have to swivel around to aim, and by that time I am on top of them. If I can't dispatch them at close range, I back step, orient on them, then charge again, all in like two seconds. If there are columns in the room, or big ridges on the wall, I can often climb up one of those without them noticing, then jump at them from an odd angle, taking them by surprise.

Overall, the best thing you can for any situation do is practice. Eventually you will reach a point where you can react without thinking, the legendary "zone". It's different for everybody. Some people have a higher skill ability than otheres, but everybody can reach the zone, IMO.

Your sensitivity settings all depend on your mouse though. You really wanna just find a setting where you can do a 180 degree turn or slightly more just by moving your wrist a little. I can do this with sensitivity 8, so I use that, though I wouldn't say I have a fantastic aim to be honest.

    Or even a semi-good aim

Wanna be able to aim REALLY good in any game? Well follow these steps ^^

    1. Buy a good Logitech optical mouse. Doesn't even have to be dual optical, just optical.

    2. Install the drivers and turn off Acceleration in games and in windows. Make the speed a few bars slower than default.

    3. Buy a Func Surface mousepad. www.func.net . This is the most important step.

    4. Set your sensitivity to 1.2 .

Now you should be able to track down any alien with ease

if practice isnt helping, just blanket the general area of the enemy in lead, you'll be bound to take down a skulk with a full LMG clip at the very least.

Strafe in the opposite direction. eg. If he moves forward, avoid him and in his opposite direction whilst firing. Therefore, if the skulk is charging you, avoid him, wait for him to pass, train your cursor at the skulk and strafe away from him.

I can't really aim well, but when the aforementioned tactic can be utilized, fragging the skulk isn't that hard.

    a) fps skills

if you've played FPS games for an absurd portion of your lifetime, you'll be very good at aiming in general

    b) ns practice

after playing NS for a rediculous amount of time, you know how your enemies move and how to subconsciously predict it.
